Ques. Is the PhD Microbiology programme at GITAM Visakhapatnam available only at the Visakhapatnam campus?
Ans. As per the 2026-2027 admissions brochure, the PhD in Life Sciences - Microbiology is offered at the Visakhapatnam and Bengaluru campuses of GITAM. It is not available at the Hyderabad campus. Students applying specifically for the Visakhapatnam campus must select VSP as their preferred campus during the online application process at researchadmissions.gitam.edu.
Ques. Which entrance exams are accepted for PhD Microbiology admission at GITAM, and do I need to appear for GReAT if I have a CSIR-NET score?
Ans. GITAM accepts CSIR-UGC NET (Life Sciences), GATE (Life Sciences/Biotechnology), ICAR, and DBT-JRF scores for exemption from the GReAT written test. If you hold a valid score in any of these exams, you are directly called for the personal interview without needing to appear for GReAT. Only candidates without any of these qualifying scores must appear for the in-person GReAT exam at GITAM Campus on 30th May 2026.

Ans. GITAM Visakhapatnam houses the MURTI Multidisciplinary Research Centre, which supports advanced research in life sciences including microbiology. Ans. Yes, GITAM's eligibility criteria for PhD Microbiology is broad and includes candidates with a Master's degree in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Food Science, Environmental Science, or any branch of Biological Science. Candidates with M.Pharm, M.V.Sc., M.Sc. (Agriculture), MD, MS, or M.Tech. degrees are also eligible. The minimum requirement is 55% marks in aggregate in the qualifying degree.
Ques. What is the GITAM PhD Fellowship and is it guaranteed for all admitted scholars?
Ans. The GITAM PhD Fellowship provides INR 33,000 per month to selected Full-Time PhD scholars for a maximum period of 3 years. This fellowship is awarded to a limited number of candidates based on merit and is not guaranteed to all admitted scholars. Scholars who already hold external fellowships such as CSIR-JRF, DBT-JRF, or ICMR-JRF can continue to receive their respective fellowship amounts, which are typically higher than the GITAM fellowship.
