SHEAT Diploma Production Engg {Lateral} FAQs
Ques. Is the Diploma in Production Engineering {Lateral} at SHEAT a full-time on-campus programme?
Ans. Yes, this is a full-time, on-campus programme conducted at the SHEAT College of Polytechnic campus in Varanasi. Students are required to attend regular classes, practical sessions, and production workshops on campus. The lateral entry route allows eligible students to directly join the second year of the 3-year Diploma programme, effectively completing the diploma in 2 years instead of 3. There is no distance or online mode for this course.
Ques. What is the difference between the regular Diploma in Production Engineering and the Lateral Entry version at SHEAT?
Ans. The regular Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Production) is a 3-year programme open to students who have passed Class 10 (SSC). The Lateral Entry (Group K under JEECUP) is a 2-year programme for students who have already completed 10+2 with relevant science/vocational subjects or Class 10 + 2-year ITI in a related mechanical/production trade. Lateral entry students join directly in the second year, skipping the first year. The fee structure and curriculum from the second year onwards are the same for both categories.
Ques. What subjects and skills does the Diploma in Production Engineering cover at SHEAT?
Ans. The programme covers a wide range of manufacturing and production-related subjects including manufacturing processes, machine tool technology, metrology and quality control, CNC programming and machining, tool and die design, production planning and control, industrial engineering, and workshop practice. Students get hands-on training in SHEAT's well-equipped mechanical engineering labs and production workshops, preparing them for roles in manufacturing plants, fabrication units, and engineering industries.
Ques. Is JEECUP mandatory for admission to the Lateral Entry Diploma in Production Engineering at SHEAT, or can I get direct admission?
Ans. JEECUP (UPJEE Polytechnic) Group K is the primary route for admission to lateral entry diploma programmes in UP, including at SHEAT. However, if seats remain vacant after counselling rounds, institutions may fill them through direct admission based on merit. It is strongly recommended to appear for JEECUP 2026 to maximise your chances. The JEECUP 2026 application is open until 30 April 2026 at jeecup.admissions.nic.in.
Ques. What are the career options after completing the Lateral Entry Diploma in Production Engineering from SHEAT?
Ans. After completing this diploma, students can work as production supervisors, quality control inspectors, CNC operators, tool room technicians, and manufacturing engineers in industries such as automobile manufacturing, heavy engineering, fabrication, and consumer goods production. Companies like Tata Motors, Bharat Forge, L&T, and various MSME manufacturing units regularly hire diploma holders in production engineering. Additionally, diploma holders are eligible for lateral entry into the second year of B.Tech (Mechanical Engineering) programmes, allowing them to upgrade their qualification further.
Ques. What ITI trades are eligible for lateral entry into the Diploma in Production Engineering at SHEAT?
Ans. As per JEECUP Group K eligibility norms, candidates who have passed Class 10 and completed a 2-year ITI in trades such as Fitter, Machinist, Turner, Tool and Die Maker, Welder, Sheet Metal Worker, Mechanic (Machine Tool Maintenance), or other relevant mechanical/production trades are eligible for lateral entry into the Diploma in Production Engineering. The specific list of eligible ITI trades is published in the JEECUP Information Brochure available at jeecup.admissions.nic.in.
