SMIT B.Tech CSE (AI & ML) FAQs

Ques. Is B.Tech CSE (AI & ML) at SMIT different from the regular B.Tech CSE programme, and does it affect placement opportunities?

Ans. Yes, B.Tech CSE (AI & ML) is a distinct specialisation from the regular B.Tech CSE at SMIT. The AI & ML programme has a curriculum focused specifically on machine learning algorithms, deep learning, computer vision, NLP, and AI-driven applications, whereas the regular CSE covers a broader range of topics. In terms of placements, both branches are treated similarly by most recruiters visiting SMIT, as companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, and Capgemini recruit from all CSE branches. However, AI/ML-specific roles at companies like Microsoft, Google, and Nomura may give a slight edge to AI & ML students who have built strong project portfolios.

Ques. What is the actual total cost of studying B.Tech CSE (AI & ML) at SMIT for 4 years, including hostel?

Ans. The tuition and other fees for General category students come to approximately Rs. 14.69 lakh for the full 4-year programme (excluding hostel). If you opt for the most common hostel option (Double Sharing Non-AC), the annual hostel and mess cost is Rs. 1,35,300, which adds approximately Rs. 5.41 lakh over 4 years. This brings the total estimated cost to around Rs. 20.10 lakh for 4 years including hostel. Scholarships based on JEE rank or Class 12 marks can significantly reduce the tuition component.

Ques. Can I get admission to SMIT B.Tech CSE (AI & ML) without a JEE Main score?

Ans. Yes, JEE Main is not the only route. SMIT accepts admissions through three pathways: JEE Main score, MET (Manipal Entrance Test conducted by MAHE), and the SMIT Online Test conducted by Sikkim Manipal University itself. The SMIT Online Test is a relatively accessible route for students who have not appeared for JEE Main or MET. Sikkim domicile candidates can also apply through the state-level entrance test conducted by the Government of Sikkim's HRDD department.

Ques. How are placements specifically for the AI & ML branch at SMIT, and what kind of roles can I expect?

Ans. SMIT does not publish branch-specific placement data for AI & ML separately. Overall, SMIT's placement statistics show a highest package of Rs. 54 LPA and an average package of approximately Rs. 6.48 LPA across all branches. CSE and its specialisations (including AI & ML) tend to have the best placement outcomes at SMIT. Typical roles offered to AI & ML graduates include Machine Learning Engineer, Data Analyst, Software Developer, AI Research Associate, and Business Intelligence Analyst. Top recruiters include Microsoft, Google, Amazon, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, HCL, and Capgemini, among others.

Ques. Is the SMIT campus in a remote location, and does it affect student life and internship opportunities?

Ans. SMIT is located in Majitar, East Sikkim, which is approximately 40 km from Gangtok and about 100 km from Siliguri. The campus is indeed in a relatively remote, hilly area, which is a common concern among prospective students. However, the campus is fully residential with hostels, mess, sports facilities, and a self-contained environment. For internships, most students pursue remote internships or travel to metro cities during summer breaks. The college's Training and Placement Cell actively facilitates internship connections with companies, and many students have secured internships at reputed firms despite the location.

Ques. What scholarships are realistically available for a student with 85% in Class 12 and a JEE Main rank of 2.5 lakh?

Ans. A student with 85% in Class 12 PCM average qualifies for a 30% merit-based scholarship on the course fee. Simultaneously, a JEE Main All India Rank of 2.5 lakh (between 2 lakh and 3 lakh) qualifies for a 35% JEE-based scholarship. However, since only one scholarship can be availed at a time, the student should opt for the higher of the two, which is the 35% JEE-based scholarship. On a yearly fee of Rs. 3,60,400, a 35% concession amounts to Rs. 1,26,140 per year, reducing the effective annual fee to approximately Rs. 2,34,260. Over 4 years, this results in a saving of approximately Rs. 5.04 lakh on tuition fees.
