SMIT B.Tech Data Science Lateral FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between the regular B.Tech CSE (Data Science) and the Lateral Entry B.Tech CSE (Data Science) at SMIT?
Ans. The regular B.Tech CSE (Data Science) is a 4-year programme starting from the 1st year (1st semester), open to Class 12 pass-outs. The Lateral Entry B.Tech CSE (Data Science) is a 3-year programme where eligible Diploma holders or B.Sc graduates are admitted directly to the 2nd year (3rd semester), skipping the first year. Both programmes lead to the same B.Tech degree from Sikkim Manipal University. The lateral entry route saves one year and is ideal for students who have already completed a relevant diploma and want to upgrade to a full engineering degree. The fee structure and curriculum from the 2nd year onwards are identical for both routes.
Ques. Is the B.Tech Lateral Entry (Data Science) admission at SMIT based on entrance exam or merit?
Ans. Admission to B.Tech Lateral Entry at SMIT is purely merit-based on the marks obtained in the qualifying examination (Diploma or B.Sc). There is no separate entrance exam required for lateral entry candidates. You do not need to appear for JEE Main, MET, or SMET. Simply apply online at apply.applysmit.in, submit your Diploma/B.Sc mark sheets, and the merit list is prepared based on your qualifying examination percentage. This makes the process straightforward and accessible for diploma holders.
Ques. Can a student with a Diploma in a non-CS branch apply for B.Tech Lateral Entry (Data Science) at SMIT?
Ans. Yes, SMIT accepts Diploma holders from any branch of Engineering and Technology for lateral entry into B.Tech CSE (Data Science), provided they have at least 45% marks (40% for Reserved Category) in their Diploma. The eligibility does not restrict the branch of diploma. However, students from non-CS backgrounds may find the Data Science curriculum more challenging initially, as it involves programming, algorithms, and mathematics. SMIT's curriculum is designed to bridge this gap, but students are advised to build foundational programming skills before joining.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing B.Tech Lateral Entry (Data Science) from SMIT?
Ans. Graduates of B.Tech CSE (Data Science) from SMIT can pursue careers in Data Analytics, Machine Learning Engineering, AI Development, Business Intelligence, and Data Science across industries like IT, e-commerce, banking, healthcare, media, and manufacturing. The programme's curriculum covers Python, R, SQL, Big Data tools, and AI frameworks, making graduates job-ready for roles such as Data Analyst, ML Engineer, Data Scientist, and Business Analyst. SMIT's placement cell has facilitated placements in companies like Amazon, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Microsoft, and many more. The average package at SMIT is approximately Rs. 6.48 LPA with a highest package of Rs. 54 LPA (2024, institute-wide).
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for lateral entry students at SMIT? What are the charges?
Ans. Yes, hostel accommodation is available for lateral entry students at SMIT on the same terms as regular students. The campus has separate hostels for boys and girls with twin-sharing rooms with attached bathrooms, 24x7 Wi-Fi, solar hot water, night canteen, and laundry services. Hostel is optional but recommended given the remote location of the campus in Majitar, East Sikkim. Annual hostel charges inclusive of mess and utility deposit are approximately Rs. 1,35,300 for double sharing non-AC rooms, Rs. 1,57,400 for single non-AC, Rs. 1,74,200 for double sharing AC, and Rs. 2,29,800 for single AC rooms. Single and AC rooms are allotted subject to availability.
Ques. What scholarships are specifically available for B.Tech Lateral Entry students at SMIT, and how much can I save?
Ans. SMIT has a dedicated Lateral Entry Merit Scholarship for B.Tech lateral entry students. If your Diploma overall percentage is 90% or above, you get a 50% concession on the course fee. For 80-89%, it is 40%; for 70-79%, it is 30%; and for 60-69%, it is 20%. For a General category lateral entry student paying Rs. 3,60,400 per year, a 50% scholarship saves Rs. 1,80,200 per year, amounting to over Rs. 5.4 lakhs across the 3-year programme. Additionally, Need-cum-Merit scholarships are available for economically weaker students, and Sikkim domicile students can avail up to 75% tuition fee scholarship if nominated by the Government of Sikkim. Only one scholarship type can be availed at a time.
