SMIT B.Tech IT Lateral FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech IT (Lateral Entry) and B.Tech CSE (Lateral Entry) at SMIT? Which one should I choose?
Ans. The B.Tech IT programme at SMIT is offered by the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology (CS&IT), while B.Tech CSE is offered by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Both programmes cover similar core subjects but differ in focus areas. IT has a stronger emphasis on software applications, database technologies, information systems, network technologies, cloud technologies, and cybersecurity, while CSE leans more towards algorithms, system design, and hardware-software integration. Both departments are NBA accredited and have similar placement records. The choice depends on your interest area. If you are more inclined towards software development, networking, and information systems, IT is a good choice.
Ques. Is the B.Tech IT (Lateral Entry) degree from SMIT/SMU recognised by AICTE and UGC? Will it be valid for government jobs and higher studies?
Ans. Yes, the B.Tech Lateral Entry IT programme at SMIT is approved by AICTE and offered under Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), which is recognised by UGC and accredited by NAAC with Grade A+. The IT department is also NBA accredited. The degree is equivalent to a regular B.Tech degree and is accepted for government jobs, PSU recruitment (including GATE-based recruitment), and higher studies (M.Tech, MS, PhD) at universities across India and abroad.
Ques. What is the total cost of studying B.Tech Lateral Entry IT at SMIT for 3 years, including hostel?
