SMIT B.Tech Lateral VLSI FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech Lateral Entry (VLSI Design) and the regular B.Tech (VLSI Design) at SMIT, and is the degree equivalent?
Ans. The B.Tech Lateral Entry programme at SMIT allows diploma holders to directly join the second year (3rd semester), completing the degree in 3 years instead of 4. The degree awarded is the same B.Tech in Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design and Technology) from Sikkim Manipal University, and it is equivalent to the regular 4-year B.Tech for all practical purposes including employment and higher studies. The curriculum from the 3rd semester onwards is identical for both lateral entry and regular students. The only difference is that lateral entry students miss the first-year common engineering subjects, which are assumed to have been covered during the diploma programme.
Ques. Which diploma branches are eligible for B.Tech Lateral Entry (VLSI Design) at SMIT?
Ans. SMIT accepts diploma holders from any branch of Engineering and Technology for lateral entry, not just Electronics or ECE. This means diploma holders in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and other branches are also eligible, provided they have at least 45% marks (40% for reserved categories) in their diploma. However, students from Electronics, ECE, or Electrical Engineering backgrounds will find the transition to VLSI Design coursework smoother, as the subject matter is closely related to their diploma curriculum.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing B.Tech Lateral Entry (VLSI Design) from SMIT?
Ans. Graduates of B.Tech in Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design and Technology) from SMIT can pursue careers in semiconductor design, embedded systems, FPGA development, chip verification, and electronic product development. Key employers in this field include Intel, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Keysight, Ericsson, Bosch, and various defence and space organisations like DRDO and ISRO. SMIT's placement cell has facilitated placements at several of these companies. The VLSI specialisation is particularly relevant given India's National Semiconductor Mission and the growing demand for chip design engineers in the country.
Ques. Is the lateral entry scholarship at SMIT applicable from the first year of the programme?
Ans. Yes, the lateral entry scholarship at SMIT is applicable from the time of admission and continues for the entire 3-year duration of the programme, subject to maintaining a CGPA of 7.5 or above with no backlogs and no disciplinary cases in each subsequent year. For a diploma holder with 90% or above marks, the 50% scholarship on the course fee of Rs. 3,12,700 per year translates to a saving of Rs. 1,56,350 per year, or approximately Rs. 4.69 lakh over 3 years. This makes the effective annual fee approximately Rs. 1,56,350 for top-performing diploma holders.
Ques. How does the VLSI Design programme at SMIT compare to similar programmes at other engineering colleges in the North East?
Ans. SMIT is one of the few engineering colleges in the North East and East India that offers a dedicated B.Tech programme in Electronics Engineering with VLSI Design and Technology specialisation. The programme is AICTE-approved and backed by SMU's NAAC A+ accreditation. The ECE department at SMIT has active research projects funded by DRDO, DST, AICTE, and ISRO, and the Advanced Communication Lab is regularly upgraded. In terms of rankings, SMIT is ranked #1 among engineering colleges in Sikkim and #3 among private engineering colleges in the East Zone, making it a strong choice for students in the region.
Ques. What is the total cost of the B.Tech Lateral Entry (VLSI Design) programme at SMIT for 3 years, including hostel?
Ans. The tuition and other fees for General category students come to approximately Rs. 9.62 lakh for the full 3-year programme (excluding hostel). If you opt for the Double Sharing (Non-AC) hostel, the annual cost is Rs. 1,35,300, adding approximately Rs. 4.06 lakh over 3 years. This brings the total estimated cost to around Rs. 13.68 lakh for 3 years including hostel. With the lateral entry scholarship (50% for 90%+ diploma marks), the tuition component reduces significantly, making the effective total cost considerably lower for meritorious students.
