UIE Ph.D. CSE FAQs

Ques. What are the most active research areas for Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering at Chandigarh University?

Ans. The most active research thrust areas at CU for Ph.D. CSE include Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (deep learning, neural networks, reinforcement learning), Cybersecurity and Blockchain (cryptography, secure data transmission, cyber threat mitigation), Quantum Computing (quantum algorithms, quantum cryptography), Cloud Computing and Big Data (distributed systems, edge computing), Natural Language Processing (text mining, sentiment analysis, machine translation), Computer Vision and Robotics (object detection, autonomous systems), and IoT (smart devices, sensor networks, real-time data processing). Scholars can align their research with any of these areas based on available supervisors and funded projects.

Ques. Does Chandigarh University provide industry-funded research projects for Ph.D. CSE scholars?

Ans. Yes, CU has strong collaborations with global tech firms and provides industry-sponsored research grants specifically in areas like AI, ML, cybersecurity, and blockchain. Scholars working on such projects may receive additional funding beyond the standard fellowship. CU also has government-funded research projects from DST, ICMR, and SERB, and scholars can be part of these projects. The Technology Business Incubator at CU also provides seed funding and mentorship to scholars who wish to convert their research into startups.

Ques. Is GATE in Computer Science (CS) the only qualifying exam accepted for Ph.D. CSE admission at CU, or are other exams also accepted?

Ans. GATE in Computer Science (CS/IT) is one of the accepted qualifying exams, but it is not the only one. UGC-NET/JRF and CSIR-NET/JRF are also accepted. Candidates with any of these valid scores are exempted from the CU Ph.D. Entrance Test and are directly called for a personal interview. Candidates without any of these scores must appear for the CU Ph.D. Entrance Test. The entrance test is conducted by CU and is followed by a personal interview/presentation before the admission committee.

Ques. What is the difference between the CU full-time research fellowship and the UGC/CSIR JRF fellowship for Ph.D. scholars?

Ans. CU's own full-time research fellowship is Rs. ₹35,000 per month and is awarded by the university to eligible full-time scholars based on merit. The UGC JRF and CSIR JRF fellowships are government fellowships awarded to candidates who qualify the UGC-NET/CSIR-NET with JRF, and the amounts are Rs. ₹37,000/month for the first two years and Rs. ₹42,000/month from the third year onwards (as per current UGC norms). Scholars cannot avail both simultaneously. If you have a JRF, you would typically receive the government fellowship, which is slightly higher than CU's internal fellowship.

Ques. What is the total fee for Ph.D. Computer Science and Engineering at Chandigarh University, and are there any hidden charges?

Ans. The total fee for a 3-year Ph.D. in CSE at CU is: Admission Fee Rs. ₹10,000 (one-time) + Tuition Fee Rs. ₹70,000 per semester x 6 semesters = Rs. ₹4,20,000 + Examination Fee Rs. ₹2,500 per semester x 6 = Rs. ₹15,000 + Refundable Security Deposit Rs. ₹5,000 + Thesis Submission Fee Rs. ₹25,000 = approximately Rs. ₹4,75,000 total. The security deposit of Rs. ₹5,000 is refundable. If the program extends beyond 3 years, additional semester fees apply. There are no other hidden charges mentioned in the official fee structure.

Ques. Can a working professional with a B.Tech. degree (without M.Tech.) apply for Ph.D. CSE at Chandigarh University?

Ans. Yes, a candidate with a 4-year/8-semester B.Tech. degree with a minimum of 75% marks (or 7.5 CGPA) is eligible to apply for Ph.D. CSE at CU directly, without needing an M.Tech. degree. This is a direct Ph.D. route for exceptional B.Tech. graduates. However, such candidates must qualify the CU Ph.D. Entrance Test and personal interview (or hold a valid GATE/UGC-NET score). Working professionals can also opt for the part-time Ph.D. program, which offers flexible coursework options (weekends or a 15-day block), though the research and thesis requirements remain the same.
