To all those who interned at a start up right after 1st/2nd year, how did you do it?
hello!! I am from a tier-2 government college of Delhi (IGDTUW, tech branch - just completed my first year and starting second year) and currently struggling to find a way to improve my skills. Many of my seniors and people on the internet told me how joining a start-up would give me just that, a sense of responsibility and the environment to improve. But then comes the obstacle - do start ups even take rookie beginners? I wouldn't count myself as someone who knows it all in, but I want to learn and contribute. I bring the basic techs to the table (react.js, basic SQL and python) and I've been trying to make some projects of my own to improve with the help of AI. But somehow, it doesn't feel enough and I feel I'm not doing enough?
And apart from the internships, what should I do to improve my skillset? I feel like a total loser rn who always relying on chatGPT for every little help TvT how do people/students get out of these slumps?
during the ending of my 3rd sem, i started working full time for a US based company for 40k through linkedin
hi! i am from igdtuw as well, and got a paid ai-ml internship in a startup in my second year. it's easy to feel like you are not good enough to apply for stuff, par in off-campus situations, the only thing you can do is apply as much as you can. i must have applied to like, 300 companies via linkedin/mail till date, that was the first interview i gave, and i got the role. even after that, i have gotten only 4 interviews ever.
so my main advice would be, look at legit internship openings on linkedin (none of those fake ones), see what kind of skills they are looking for, and try to learn whatever you can out of them, so that your resume can stand out. the main thing is, you should know what you're coding and how it works. when you encounter an error, before going to chatgpt, try to go over the internet: go to stack overflow, comm forums, documentation. imo the best way to learn any tech stack is making a project yourself, while referring to the documentation. you can (and should) use chatgpt for basic help, but try to avoid that in the learning phase.
and most of all, don't be disheartened! it's really tough to get your resume even viewed in off-campus settings, so just keep applying. and off-topic, because it is not needed for startups, pleasepleaseplease be consistent with dsa. you don't have to be a codeforces expert, par we get a LOT of opportunities on campus in our uni, even in the second year, for which all you will need is dsa. so just be consistent.
all the best with everything! (and sorry for this long-ass comment lol)
