Established in 1457, the Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat Freiburg or the University of Freiburg is a public university that has set a name for itself in research fields that range from biology, chemistry to philosophy and sociology. The university offers 116 Bachelors programs and 128 Masters degree programs out of which 22 programswhich are taught exclusively in English. For the academic session 2018-19, 22 percent of the total student intake consisted of international students.

University of Freiburg Admission Deadlines

The admission applications must be submitted within the deadline and international applicants must submit well in advance. This will allow international applicants to allow enough time to apply for a visa. The detailed application periods for winter semester 2019/20 for international applicants are as follows:

Note – The detailed application periods for summer semester 2020 are not yet available. Sometimes, application to masters programs have different application periods. Applicants are advised to go through faculty web pages of concerned programs to check.

University of Freiburg International Undergraduate Admissions

University of Freiburg has a relatively simplified admission process for international students for more than 100 undergraduate programs. The essential and additional supplementary documents to be submitted by international applicants which are as follows:

  • Officially authenticated copies of school leaving certificates (with authenticated copies of the translation)
  • Officially authenticated copies of academic records ( with authenticated copies of the translation)
  • Officially authenticated copy of university degree(for graduate students)
  • Copy of proof of language proficiency (German and/ English, depending on course)
  • CV and Letter of Motivation
  • Proof of financial ability to cover all cost in Germany

Language Proficiency Requirements

Depending on the medium of instruction of course, international students need to fulfill language proficiency of German and/ English. The language of instructions of all undergraduate programs and some graduate programs is German. Students applying to these programs must submit one of the following certificates as proof of their language proficiency in German –

English Language Proficiency

International applicants who wish to enroll in masters programs conducted in English, the required language proficiency level are as follows –

  • TOEFL score of at least 100
  • An overall score of 7.0 on IELTS
  • Applicants from native English speaking countries may be granted exemption from providing test scores, such applicants must confirm the same in advance

Visa process

Students are advised to apply for their student visas at the German embassy as early as possible, and not wait for the admission process to end

  • If you are still waiting for your acceptance letter, you can apply for a prospective student visa, which are valid for 3 months and can be extended by 6 months if you are accepted to a university program within this period
  • The required documents for visa application are as follows
    • Valid passport
    • Proof of health insurance
    • Proof of sufficient funds (opening a “blocked account” in a German bank might be useful
    • Letter of acceptance, or a recognized higher education entrance qualification in case of a prospective student visa
    • Health certificate (optional is many cases)
  • The fee for Germany student visa application is 75 Euro
  • The processing of a long-stay study visa may take anywhere from 6-12 weeks from the application date. Therefore, students must plan accordingly.
