    The University of Potsdam established in 1991 is a public higher education university in Potsdam, Brandenburg. With around 21,250 students, the University has excelled in teaching and research and is well-positioned both on national and international scale. According to the THE, Potsdam ranked 28th in Young University Rankings, 2020 and #251-300 in world University Rankings in 2021.

    Programs offered at the University of Potsdam are organized into 7 faculties namely faculty of arts, faculty of science, faculty of economics and social sciences, faculty of human sciences, law faculty and digital engineering faculty. The faculty of arts and faculty of science have the highest enrollments. In winter 2019-20, a total of 21,229 enrolled including 5,422 first-year students and 2,911 international students.

    Students applying for admission to University of Potsdam must keep the following points in mind:

    • The University invites applications for the winter and summer semesters.
    • Applications for the winter semesters open from April 1 while applications for summer semester are available from November 1 of the previous year.
    • Applications for both admission-restricted and admission-free master’s degree programs can be made through uni-assist.
    • International applicants need proof of very good German language skills.
    • Bachelor’s programs are offered in German language which is why all undergraduates must possess at least level C1 of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
    • Many master’s degree programs are offered in German and applicants must have a certificate of achieving at least level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

    • In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, on-site teaching at the University of Potsdam will remain suspended until January 10. Further, the University will switch to online teaching as far as possible.

    University of Potsdam Admission Deadlines

    University of Potsdam accepts applications for the summer and winter semesters. The application deadlines for undergraduate programs are given in the table below:

    University of Potsdam International Student Admissions

    Applicants who have completed school-leaving qualification outside Germany will have to obtain recognition as certification to study in the federal state of Brandenburg either by submitting their documents to the Education Authority of Cottbus or uni-assist e.V. Additionally, international students are expected to demonstrate a good level of German language skills.

    • Academic records/transcripts from the previous institutions (must attach English or German translation of the record if not in english)

    Non-native English speakers or students who are not living in Germany need to submit English language proficiency test scores. The accepted tests and minimum score requirements are tabulated below:

    German Language Proficiency Level for International Students

    Since most programs at the University of Potsdam are offered in German, students are expected to demonstrate a certain level of proficiency in the German language. The following certificates are accepted by the university as proof of German proficiency:

    Visa Process for International Students

    International students will need to apply for a German student visa at the German Embassy or Consulate. The following documents must be arranged for getting German visa:

    • Valid national passport
    • Two recently taken biometric portrait photographs
    • Proof of Admission to a program at the University of Potsdam
    • Authenticated certificate of early education
    • Proof of Financial Support

    University of Potsdam offers a number of undergraduate programs to students who have graduated high school. The admission process and requirements for all undergraduate programs are similar. Some programs may require applicants to submit proof of passing the university’s aptitude test.

    University of Potsdam Graduate Admissions

    University of Potsdam offers a number of master’s degree programs in a variety of disciplines such as Astrophysics, Chemistry, Business Administration, Economics, Engineering, Data Science, etc. Some programs have free admission while others have restricted admission. All applicants are required to possess a bachelor’s degree. Depending on the medium of instruction, students must possess a good level of language skills in German as well as English.

    • A PDF format form will be generated after the submission of the form which needs to be signed and uploaded.

    Once the uni-assist receives an application and forwards it to the University of Potsdam, applicants are notified regarding the same. On receiving the application from uni-assist, the University forwards it to the respective program department for further processing. Students are notified by mail once the entire process is complete. To check the status of the application after it has been forwarded to the university, students are supposed to contact the person responsible for the degree program they have applied for. Admission decisions for programs with free admission are sent on an ongoing basis while admission decisions for restricted admission programs are sent no earlier than 4 weeks before the application deadline.


    Ques. How will I know if my documents require translation?

    Ans. The University of Potsdam accepts any documents or transcripts issued in German or English language. However, if the document is issued in a language other than English or German it must be submitted along with German or English translation prepared by a sworn translator.

    Ques. What if I miss the application deadline?

    Ans. Application deadlines are cut off periods. Applications submitted beyond the application deadline cannot be accepted.

    Ques. Can one still submit the missing documents after the application deadline?

    Ans. No, application deadlines are not flexible so candidates must submit the essential documents before time.

    Ques. What does without admission restriction (no NC) and admission restricted (NC UP) mean?

    Ans. Admission-free/open admission: If a degree course has an open admission, then all applicants can get admitted to the Program, if applied on time with duly filled form and requirements.

    Restricted Admission (NC UP): If only a certain number of students can be admitted and enrolled into this Program, then this Program is admission restricted.If the number of applicants are higher than the places for the degree then there will be selection on the basis of Legal Provision.
