In the 2023-24 academic year, 35 colleges of eight districts in the Bhubaneswar region reported zero admissions in 39 subjects, including in mathematics and English.
New Delhi: In the 2023-24 academic year, 35 colleges under the Bhubaneswar Higher Education Department reported zero admissions in 39 subjects. Surprisingly, subjects like mathematics and English are also included in the list.
Districts That Received 0 Admission
These colleges are spread across eight districts:
- Cuttack: 9 colleges
- Kendrapada: 6 colleges
- Dhenkanal: 5 colleges
- Jajpur: 5 colleges
- Jagatsinghpur: 5 colleges
- Khurda: 3 colleges
- Angul: 1 college
- Puri: 1 college
Subjects with No Admissions
Nine colleges didn’t receive a single admission in mathematics, and five colleges had no admissions for English. Other subjects with 0 admissions included:
- Chemistry
- Economics
- Sanskrit
- Vyakarana
- Sarva Darshana
- Sahitya
- Advaita Vedanta
The Principal of one of these colleges stated that “Students fear they may not bring good marks in mathematics and English, that’s why they do not accept these subjects as honours subjects in undergraduate (UG). They try to take other conventional subjects instead of these subjects. Another reason is lack of trained teachers to teach students and proper infrastructure in the institution.”
Reasons for Low Admissions
A principal noted that Sanskrit, Vyakarana, Sarva Darshana, Sahitya, and Advaita Vedanta are taught in Sanskrit colleges but lack teachers. Students prefer courses that promise employment after graduation.
The Regional Directorate of Education (RDE) in Bhubaneswar found that three Dhenkanal, Jajpur, and Khurda colleges had zero admissions for the past two years. The RDE had issued show-cause notices to these colleges, but they did not provide explanations.
Suman Das, regional director of education, in Bhubaneswar expressed her views in this scenario and stated that “After contacting the college authorities over telephone, they have indicated that they are no more inclined to continue with admission in the coming session. In view of this, admission restrictions have been imposed in respect of these institutions. Further, steps are being taken for closure of these colleges.”
