The AIDSO has requested for a fee reduction in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs within Karnataka government universities.

New Delhi: The All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) has urged for a reduction in both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) fees within Karnataka government universities. This request follows a proposal by a higher education reform committee to standardize UG and PG course fees.
The committee has suggested standardizing graduation and postgraduation fees across all government universities, setting undergraduate course fees at a minimum of INR 11,500 for various departments. The state government has approved this proposal, applicable to 32 universities in the state.
AIDSO State Secretary, Ajay Kamath, highlights that public university fees are 300% higher than those in government degree colleges. He also claimed that enrollment in state-run universities has reached its "lowest level" following the fee hike.
The student group noted that numerous government colleges have transitioned into cluster universities, leading to an increase in government college fees, which have risen from INR 3,500 to a starting point of INR 10,000.
In response to the fee escalation, AIDSO has appealed to the state government to allocate supplementary grants to government universities and establish a fixed fee structure for degree colleges. This plea was made from reports of universities increasing fees due to insufficient funding.
Furthermore, the committee has granted universities the authority to raise fees by 10 percent annually, subject to approval from the syndicate. The group warned that if implemented, government university degree fees could match those of private degree colleges within two years.
Moreover, the student group proposed that the state government adopt the fee structure of government colleges for degree courses in universities. They pointed out that this adjustment is essential to ensure access for economically disadvantaged students to government universities created for their benefit.
