Jammu & Kashmir: Teachers Conduct Community Classes to Teach Students Amidst Pandemic

With schools shut down across the country as a result of COVID-19, teachers in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch have run community classes to mitigate the academic loss of students and ensure that they do not suffer as a result of prolonged lockdown.

"We've been doing this for the last three months to make use of the time we've had and to make sure students don't lose precious time. The Director of School Education in Jammu said that those teachers who are willing to take classes in the community are teaching while following the COVID-19 protocol", said Suhail, a teacher who has been teaching classes for children in his locality.

According to Jalil Khwaja, another teacher who attends community classes in Poonch, the students gave a very positive response to the initiative.

"We received a very overwhelming response from the students. We decided to start these classes because we didn't want the student to lose out on the precious months of education. Since we were free, too, it was a good way to keep ourselves occupied, "Khwaja said.

Before entering the classroom, teachers have sanitised students' hands and all COVID precautionary measures are taken. Community classes have been going for the last 3-4 months and are helping students to gain lost ground as a result of COVID-19.

"We've been coming here since the lockdown. When we come here, our hands are sanitised and masks are also provided. Without masks, we are not allowed to enter. Our syllabus is also making progress, "he added.

He added, "These classes have not only been held in Poonch but in several other places in the state for the last three to four months. I am very pleased that, despite the lockdown, people are playing their part as educators and fulfilling their responsibilities.
