Karnataka: According to recent reports, the Karnataka state government has taken a decision to re-open degree, engineering, and diploma colleges from November 17, 2020. The colleges were shut down in the month of March 2020 due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

The Karnataka Government took this decision in a meeting that was convened by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa. Other members in the meeting were officials from health, social welfare, backward class, finance, and Narayan the in charge of the Higher Education Department.

In the meeting, it was decided that the colleges will reopen from 17 November 2020. However, it will not be mandatory for students to attend the classes physically.

Students are free to make a voluntary choice of whether to attend the class physically or online. Another option available for the students is blended learning in which students can make use of both the provisions.

The students who wish to attend colleges physically from the institute must bring a consent letter signed by the parents in order to be allowed for the classes.

The officials have also added that all safety measures according to the SOP’s (Standard operational procedures) for COVID-19 will be followed.

The strength of the classes will also be decided according to the SOP’s to follow the social distancing protocols. Institutes will also be assigned task forces to ensure that all the necessary measures are being taken.

Students planning to reside in SC/ST, social welfare or OBC hostels will receive help from the Government to ensure that all necessary safety measures are taken. The state government will provide transport arrangements for these students.

Remark by Official:

Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Ashwath Narayan added, "As per the UGC guidelines, online classes began in October. States were told to decide about opening colleges based on the situation. We presented to the chief minister the preparations made for opening colleges and asked for a suitable date. November 17th, after Deepavali, we are opening colleges for students who want to come and attend the classes. It is optional. Regarding the practical classes, they need to attend. This has been a demand of the students as it is their future."
