NEP 2020: Assam Government Forms Committee to Develop Strategy to Put NEP into Action

The Governor of Assam, Jagdish Mukhi, has announced that a committee of vice-chancellors of some universities has been formed to develop a blueprint for implementing the National Education Policy 2020 in the state.

Earlier, the Governor had attended the Governor’s Conference on the Role of NEP in Transforming Higher Education. He said, “A Rajyik Shiksha Aayog will be constituted in Assam for implementation of all the recommendations of the new policy.”

The State Assembly has passed bills for establishing two new universities. Research on social issues will be promoted, as will be teaching in multiple languages in schools.

The Governor has also urged the Centre to form a Multidisciplinary Education and Research University (MERU) and an Indian Institute of Translation and Interpretation in Assam.

The Prime Minister said that “maximum flexibility” has to be shown in implementing the policy, adding that NEP should be put into action no matter which government is in power.

The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, said that both the central government and the state governments will have to increase expenditure on research and innovation to boost the Indian economy.

At the meeting, the advisor to the education department of the state, Professor Mihir Kanti Choudhury; the secretary to the higher education department, Preetam Saikia; the secretary to the governor, S S Meenakshi Sundaram; and the vice-chancellor of Gauhati University, Professor P J Handique, were also present at the meeting.
