NEP 2020 Needs Plan of Action for Implementation: Delhi Deputy CM

The Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi said that the new National Education Policy lacks ways of implementation and needs planning. Otherwise, it will be reduced to a mere idea. He added that it was necessary to put NEP 2020 into action.

The Deputy Chief Minister was speaking at the Governor’s Conference on the Role of NEP in Transforming Higher Education, on 7 September.

He said that the NEP talks about spending six percent of the GDP on education; this was also mentioned in the education policy of 1968, but never implemented. He stated that a law should be passed so that upcoming governments are bound by it. It was also necessary to ensure that sufficient resources were available to effectively implement the policy.

The NEP replaces the National Policy on Education that was framed in 1986. It aims to transform the school and higher education systems in a way to make India a global knowledge superpower.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that 80 percent of the Indian youth who have a degree are not considered employable. This requires the attention of the government.

The Governor’s Conference on the Role of NEP in Transforming Higher Education was held in the form of a video conference. The Prime Minister addressed the Vice-Chancellors and the state education ministers, stating that NEP 2020 will pave the way for the country to become a leading nation in global education. He also said that it will give a new direction to the social and economic aspects of 21st century India.
