North Karnataka: Teachers Giving Lessons in the Evening, after Parents Return from Work

In many districts of north Karnataka, government schools are giving online classes in the evening after students’ parents return from work. This is being done as many students are dependent on their parents for learning gadgets.

Primary and high school teachers said that they are giving classes from 7 to 9:30 p.m. during the week to enable greater student participation.

A teacher at a government school in Handiganur village of Haveri district said, “Most of our students come from labourers’ families and their parents cannot buy separate smartphones for their children. To help these students, we are conducting online classes when their parents return home after work in the evening.”

Muskan Taj Sagar, a class 6 student at a government school in Ijari Lakamapu, Haveri, says, “My father has a smartphone and I wait for him to come back from work to attend online classes.”

The situation is similar in Gadag, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Haveri and parts of Belagavi, where evening classes have become the norm. Teachers are giving classes according to the convenience of their students.

Haveri DDPI Andaneppa Vadageri said that teachers are giving lessons in the evening to make sure that students do not miss any classes.
