On Wednesday, the higher education department asked the registrars of public universities and Principals of colleges to start teaching students of intermediary years or semesters online from 13 July onwards.

In an official letter, the Secretary of the Higher Education Department said that such Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) ought to issue books from their respective libraries.

The secretary added that the HEIs should run a helpline through their teachers to frequently contact students over the telephone in order to counsel them.

“Every HEI must run a help-line through their teachers to frequently contact students telephonically to counsel them in these difficult times and also meet their queries regarding various matters such as teaching, examinations, projects, assignments and scholarships,” he said.

In the letter, the Registrar said that the HEIs must complete the evaluation of the final year or semester students to release the results by 31 August. He asked the HEIs to carry on with their official work with a strength of 50 percent from 1 July to 31 August. The heads of the HEIs will have to ensure this.

The other employees should be accessible over the telephone and be ready to go to the HEI at short notice.
