The Chief Minister of Goa has said that online education cannot be compulsory, as Internet connectivity is not available in many places, and many students do not have access to smartphones or computers.
As many as 11,000 teachers have been trained for online classes in Goa. A meeting was held among the Chief Minister and other stakeholders, which discussed options for schools to hold online classes, including showing content on television channels such as Doordarshan.
The Chief Minister said that schools will have to teach the syllabus without forcing online education. A decision will be made after schools reopen in Goa after 15 July, depending on the state of the pandemic at that time.
The Chief Minister added that teachers have to go to schools from Wednesday onward and start preparations to avoid losing time.
In Karnataka, the state government had stopped online classes for children from Kindergarten to Class 5. The Primary and Secondary Education Minister of the state stated that online classes for LKG, UKG, and primary classes have to be stopped immediately, and so must the collection of fees for such classes.
Schools across India are holding classes online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
