SC Hearing for Pleas Against UGC Exam Guidelines Held Today, Next Hearing on 31 July

The Supreme Court today held hearing for pleas challenging a University Grants Commission (UGC) circular and seeking cancellation of final term examination in view of COVID-19 outbreak.

The apex court was approached by 31 students from different universities to revoke the decision of UGC to conduct the examination.

In a notification released on July 6, the UGC had directed all universities across the country to complete the terminal semester and final year examinations before September 30.

Among the 31 petitioners, one has been tested COVID positive and prayed for directions to the UGC to adopt the CBSE mode, and conduct the examinations later at a later date for the students who are not satisfied with the marks based on internal assessment.

Students Demand Cancellation of Exams

A large number of students have demanded that their University exams be cancelled as the infection is rising in the nation.

Furthermore, students have also requested that their mark sheets should be issued by 31, July 2020. The demand has also been supported by many states/UT’s including West Bengal, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Odisha. 

The top officials of these states/UT have supported the decision of cancellation of exams by writing a letter to UGC, MHRD, and the Prime Minister.
