Tamil Nadu: All college students promoted without exams, final year students excepted

On 22 July, the government of Tamil Nadu promoted all college students to the next academic year without holding any examination, with the exception of students in their final year. This decision was made due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Such students will be given marks in accordance with the guidelines set by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), said the Chief Minister of the state.

All students who are pursuing BA, B.Sc, MA, M.Sc, B.Tech, M.Tech, MCA and diploma courses, with the exception of final-year students, have been promoted to the next year.

Universities are planning to give an assessment test to final-year students. According to a statement released by the UGC on 6 July, all final-year students must take their semester examinations by the end of September.

To this end, the state government had formed an 11-member expert panel to discuss this matter. According to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the verdict of the panel is that it will be impossible to hold the examinations due to the pandemic. A detailed government order will be released by the Higher Education Department on this matter.
