In the Super-Session of Medical Council of India (MCI), the Board of Governors have framed new rules for all medical postgraduate students pursuing MS/MD in different medical boards across all the Medical Institutions.
The statement has mentioned that the students shall undergo a compulsory residential rotation of around three months in District Health System/ District Hospitals as a part of the course curriculum.
The official notification stated that the rotations will take place in the 3rd, 4th or 5th Semester of the PG programs.

The rotation shall be termed as “District Residency Program (DRP)” and will be implemented from the upcoming session 2020-2021 and the students will be termed as “District Resident”.
Main Objectives of DRP system for the PG programs
The DRP system is expected to widen the expertise of the students and will effectively increase the skill development among the students.
Below mentioned are the major objectives of the DRP system:
- To expose the students to the district health system and to inculcate them in health care services.
- To familiarize them with implementation, planning, monitoring and assessment of national health programs at district level.
- It expects to guide the students in curative, preventive and curative approaches towards health care services under the functioning of National Health Mission.
The notification also mentioned that the purpose of this program will only get served at the district hospitals having 100+ beds.

Responsibilities assigned to the District Resident
District Residents will be assigned with below mentioned tasks:
- Serving at OPD, Emergency, casualty and other fields which also includes night duties.
- Diagnostic/ Laboratory services
- Pharmacy and Forensic services.
- General Clinical Duties.
- Managerial and Public Health Programs.
The district residents will work under the supervision of the District Residency Program Coordinator (DRPC).

As the released notification, the District Residents have to complete this program with satisfactory conditions to appear for the respective final year PG exams. They will also receive an additional honorarium as a token of recognition for the contribution towards healthcare services.
The notification also read that the respective state governments shall provide proper amenities to the district residents such as accommodation, transport and security(especially to lady candidates).
The state government may also make provisions to incentivize postings to remote and difficult areas and motivate the students to serve under tough conditions, added the official notice.
