The Tamil Nadu government has called off the first and second-year exams for UG arts & science and polytechnic courses, all year exams for UG engineering courses, first-year PG arts and engineering courses, and first and second year MCA courses, on July 23, 2020.
Students and teachers of the state believe that the state has taken the right step in this pandemic situation.
Earlier the representatives of the Students Federation of India (SFI) protested in the demand for cancellation of examinations, who now said that there could have been no other way but to call off the exams.

SFI district secretary Dhinesh Raja said, "Online exams would not have been possible with a huge population of rural students who don't have access to networks or devices."
Presidents of TN Government Collegiate Teachers Association (TNGCTA), T Veeramani said that around 600 students would appear for every exam and they would have to sit for three hours, which would have posed a serious risk. So calling off the semester exams is a right move by the state government.

Veeramani further said, "The state can follow the same procedure as that for other years and award grades for final years. It will help the final year students to choose a career or take up higher studies."
But SFI district secretary Dhinesh is against this view, he said that if final year exams were conducted, it would take another 2 months for declaring results and even longer for revaluation. This would mean some final year students may lose the entire year. So it is important to call off final year exams as well and students can quickly decide on pursuing further studies.
