The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked universities and colleges to spread awareness about the new National Education Policy (NEP). They have been directed to share their activities concerning this on the university activity monitoring portal maintained by the UGC.
Approved by the Union Cabinet, the NEP replaces the National Policy on Education that was framed in 1986. It has been envisioned with a view to making far-reaching reforms in the Indian education system to make India a superpower.
Choice between three or four-year undergraduate courses, multiple entry and exit options in degree courses, adding 35 million seats in the higher educational institutions, fixing of fees and dropping of the M.Phil course- these are part of the new NEP.
The policy aims to establish a single umbrella body for the entire higher educational structure of India.
The Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) will have distinct and independent bodies which will each assume separate functions of accreditation, funding, and academic standard setting. These bodies will replace autonomous bodies like the UGC, AICTE and NAAC.
