In the latest list, UGC has included the names of the universities who have yet not complied with the regulation as of June 1, 2024.
New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a defaulter’s list comprising of the names of the universities that have failed to appoint ombudspersons. The list includes a total of 108 public universities, 2 deemed universities, and 47 private universities across the country.
Earlier, the UGC had mandated the appointment of ombudspersons under the UGC (Redressal of Grievances of Students) Regulations, 2023. On January 17, 2024, UGC declared another list which comprised a list of universities that had not complied with these regulations. These universities were alerted of their non-compliance and requested them to appoint ombudspersons.
In the latest list, UGC has included the names of the universities who have yet not complied with the regulation as of June 1, 2024. The commission has asked the listed universities to appoint omnibudspersons at the earliest and notify UGC of the appointment through the mail IDs given below:
- Central Universities should communicate at mssarma.ugc@nic.in
- State Universities should at smitabidani.ugc@nic.in
- Deemed to be Universities should reach out at monika.ugc@nic.in
- Private Universities should reach out at amol.ugc@nic.in
Among the notable institutions mentioned are Calcutta University, Ranchi University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, International Institute of Information Technolory (IIIT) Odisha, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Annamalai University, Vidya Sagar University, along with several others from different states.
What is the Importance of Appointing Ombudspersons?
The ombudspersons are retired vice-chancellors or retired professors who have worked as deans or heads of department, with 10 years of experience at state or central universities, Institutions of National Importance or deemed to be universities; or a former district judge.
Ombudspersons play a crucial role in maintaining transparency and accountability within higher education institutions, providing a formal mechanism for students to seek redressal of their grievances. It ensures that student grievances are addressed effectively and efficiently.
