Students commencing their masters and doctoral studies, at any top international university, have to submit at least 2 LORs. Often, students prefer submitting academic LORs over professional LOR, without understanding how both play a different role.

A professional letter of recommendation vouches for an applicant’s professional skills and technical knowledge. It can be written by your employer and/or supervisor. Of the two, asking for a LOR from Supervisors is better as they are the one who has witnessed your growth closely.

Some other pointers to be kept in mind while writing an LOR from a supervisor are mentioned below:

  • Recommendation letter should be written on the company’s letterhead and should preferably have the supervisor’s seal. Furthermore, its supervisor must sign the LOR under the company seal.
  • The LOR has to mention the tenure for which the applicant has worked and the area or designation of the applicant at the company.
  • Why the supervisor would like to recommend the applicant for further study should be highlighted. Areas of expertise, positive skills, and specific strengths observed if any should be mentioned in the LOR by the supervisor.
