Chalmers University of Technology Application Deadlines

Chalmers admits Indian and other non-EU applicants only in the Autumn intake, aligned with Sweden’s single first admission round per the official Chalmers master’s application page. Chalmers University of Technology’s primary intake for Indian students is Autumn (August start) — every master’s programme opens here.

Insider note: The single 15 January deadline is a hard national cut-off for Sweden. Missing it pushes you to the late round, where most Chalmers MSc programmes are already closed to non-EU applicants because seats fill in the first round.

Chalmers University of Technology Eligibility for Indian Students

Chalmers assesses two blocks: academic equivalence to a Swedish Bachelor’s, and English proficiency. Indian three-year Bachelor’s degrees are recognised as equivalent when they carry at least 180 ECTS credits in a related discipline. Programme-specific prerequisites in mathematics, programming or engineering subjects apply on top of the institutional floor.

• UG general entry: Class XII with Mathematics and English through Class XII (used only for pathway routing since Chalmers’ UG is Swedish-medium).
• PG general entry: Bachelor’s degree of at least three years (180 ECTS) in Science, Engineering, Technology or Architecture.
• PG programme-specific: Minimum 60% (or CGPA 6.5/10) in the relevant field, plus prerequisite courses named on each MSc page.
• English 6 equivalent: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5, or TOEFL iBT 90 total with no section below 20.

Chalmers IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Chalmers grants exemption from an English test only where prior university studies were conducted entirely in English at a recognised institution. For Indian applicants, a bare Medium of Instruction letter from an Indian university is rarely sufficient on its own — the transcript must show every course was taught and examined in English, and the institution must be on Sweden’s list of recognised English-medium providers. Most Indian applicants submit an IELTS or TOEFL score to avoid a case-by-case ruling.

Chalmers University of Technology PG Programs and English Scores

Chalmers offers around 40 MSc programmes fully taught in English, spanning core engineering, data and computing, life sciences, architecture and business. Chalmers University of Technology Bachelor’s Pathway

Chalmers’ Bachelor’s programmes are taught in Swedish and require the applicant to hold Swedish upper-secondary English 6 plus proficiency in Swedish. There is no English-medium three-year Bachelor’s route for Indian applicants at present. Indian students who wish to study at Chalmers usually complete a Bachelor’s in India first, then apply directly to an MSc programme in the Autumn round.

Planning note: A Class XII student targeting Chalmers should plan the MSc route, not a direct Bachelor’s transfer. The efficient sequence is a 3-year Indian BTech or BSc, then apply to Chalmers in the Autumn round of the final Bachelor’s year.

Chalmers Application Process on Universityadmissions.se

The application is a two-track process. You apply on the national portal, then send a small parallel packet to Chalmers only for programme-specific documents such as CV, motivation letter and summary sheet. Missing either track voids the application. 

1. Create your account on Universityadmissions.se after the Autumn 2027 cycle opens in mid-October 2026 and rank up to four master’s programmes in priority order.
2. Pay the application fee of SEK 900 (around INR 9,081) on Universityadmissions.se by 1 February 2027 via international card payment or bank transfer.
3. Upload academic documents including transcripts, degree certificate (if issued) and English test score to your Universityadmissions.se account before the document deadline of 1 February 2027.
4. Complete the Chalmers-specific submission on the Chalmers document upload portal with CV, motivation letter for each programme choice, summary sheet and letters of recommendation.
5. Track your application on Universityadmissions.se; qualification status is confirmed before selection begins.
6. Receive selection results around 26 March 2027 for the Autumn intake.
7. Reply to your admission offer within the portal’s reply deadline (usually 7 to 10 days) to keep your seat.

Before you apply: The Chalmers parallel packet has its own deadline that mirrors the national deadline. Submitting only on Universityadmissions.se without uploading the CV and motivation letter to the Chalmers portal is the most common reason Indian applications are rejected without review.

Chalmers Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline

Chalmers publishes selection results on Universityadmissions.se in late March, following a common national timeline for Swedish universities. Offers are ranked by programme choice: if you are admitted to your first choice, all lower choices are automatically closed. Conditional offers apply where the Bachelor’s degree certificate has not yet been issued at the time of application.

• First selection results: Around 26 March 2027, published on Universityadmissions.se.
• Reply-required window: Usually 7 to 10 days after the results release; missing it forfeits the offer.
• Second selection results: Early April 2027 for reserve-list movement.
• Conditional offers: Issued when the final Bachelor’s transcript is pending; must be cleared by the semester start.
• Deferral policy: Chalmers does not typically defer admission for non-EU applicants; a new application in the next Autumn cycle is required.

Documents Required for Chalmers University of Technology

Two document sets travel with the application — one to Universityadmissions.se for the national qualification check, and one to Chalmers for programme-level selection. All documents must be in English or officially translated, with a certified translation attached to the original.

• Passport bio-page copy valid for the entire duration of study.
• Class XII certificate and mark sheet from CBSE, ISC or the relevant state board.
• Bachelor’s degree transcripts for all completed semesters, uploaded before the document deadline.

Chalmers University of Technology Acceptance Rate

Chalmers does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Programme-level admission data from the university’s own selection statistics indicate that non-EU applicants face selective competition, especially in data, computing and electrical engineering tracks. The estimated selection rate across MSc programmes for international applicants is 15% to 25%, based on competitive-intake programme patterns and Swedish national round data — Chalmers does not publish an official institutional figure.

Chalmers Acceptance Rate by Field

Data-heavy MSc tracks such as Data Science and AI, Computer Science and Software Engineering typically show the lowest admission rates because of high global demand for a fixed seat count. Materials, Production and Sustainable Energy programmes are relatively less crowded and can admit a larger share of qualifying non-EU applicants.

Sweden Student Residence Permit Process

Indian students admitted to Chalmers apply for a Swedish student residence permit (not a visa) through the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket). The permit is granted for the full duration of the MSc programme and doubles as a study permit and Schengen entry document. Applications open once the admission letter is issued in March or April 2027.

You submit the online application on the Migrationsverket portal, pay the permit fee of SEK 1,500 (around INR 15,135), and prove financial means of SEK 10,584 per month (around INR 1,06,793) for 10 months of the year. Biometrics are captured at VFS Global or the Swedish Embassy in New Delhi. Once in Sweden, students register at the Skatteverket tax office to receive a personnummer, which is needed for banking, healthcare and the local student ID.

2026 update: Migrationsverket’s Sweden-wide processing time for student permits from India runs 6 to 10 weeks in peak season. Apply within a week of receiving your admission letter to keep an August or September arrival intact.
