Chalmers University of Technology admissions for Indian students run on Sweden’s single Autumn intake each year, with all master’s applications routed through the university portal. To qualify, Indian applicants need a UG floor of Class XII with a completed relevant Bachelor’s (3-year, 180 ECTS equivalent) in Science, Engineering, Technology or Architecture; PG entry needs the same Bachelor’s plus proof of English at IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band under 5.5) or TOEFL iBT 90+.

  • Autumn 2027 primary intake deadline: 15 January 2027 on Universityadmissions.se, with fee and document deadline on 1 February 2027.
  • Base tuition for master’s programmes starts at SEK 140,000 (around INR 14.13 Lakhs) per academic year; the one-time application fee is SEK 900 (around INR 9,081) paid to the national portal.
  • UG floor: Class XII (CBSE/ISC/state board) is accepted for pathway consideration but Chalmers’ Bachelor’s is Swedish-medium; PG floor: Bachelor’s with at least 180 ECTS in a relevant field plus IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90.
  • Chalmers does not publish an institutional acceptance rate; competitive MSc tracks like Data Science and AI or Computer Science admit an estimated 15% to 25% of applicants based on programme-round selection data.

Popular routes for Indian students are the MSc Data Science and AI, MSc Sustainable Electric Power Engineering and Electromobility, and MSc Computer Science: Algorithms, Languages and Logic; reviewers at Chalmers University of Technology  flag the research-linked thesis year and Gothenburg’s industry partnerships (Volvo, Ericsson, AstraZeneca) as the two biggest reasons Indian graduates rate the experience above the Nordic norm.

Admission Status: Open. The Autumn 2027 master’s round on Universityadmissions.se opens in mid-October 2026 and closes on 15 January 2027. The application fee of SEK 900 (around INR 9,081) and all supporting documents must reach the portal by 1 February 2027. Confirm the exact portal opening date on universityadmissions.se before you begin your application.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use SEK 1 = INR 10.09, the live rate on 22 August 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

Chalmers University of Technology Application Deadlines

Chalmers admits Indian and other non-EU applicants only in the Autumn intake, aligned with Sweden’s single first admission round per the official Chalmers master’s application page. All application steps happen on Universityadmissions.se, not on a Chalmers portal. Chalmers University of Technology’s primary intake for Indian students is Autumn (August start) — every master’s programme opens here.

Intake Level App Opens Deadline App Fee
Autumn 2027 (Primary intake) PG (MSc, non-EU) Mid-October 2026 15 January 2027 SEK 900 (INR 9,081)
Autumn 2027 (fee & docs) PG (non-EU) 1 February 2027 SEK 900 (INR 9,081)
Autumn 2027 selection results PG Late March 2027 SEK 900 (INR 9,081)
Autumn 2027 late round PG (space-available) Late March 2027 Mid-April 2027 (Closes Soon) SEK 900 (INR 9,081)

Insider note: The single 15 January deadline is a hard national cut-off for Sweden. Missing it pushes you to the late round, where most Chalmers MSc programmes are already closed to non-EU applicants because seats fill in the first round.

Chalmers University of Technology Eligibility for Indian Students

Chalmers assesses two blocks: academic equivalence to a Swedish Bachelor’s, and English proficiency. Indian three-year Bachelor’s degrees are recognised as equivalent when they carry at least 180 ECTS credits in a related discipline. Programme-specific prerequisites in mathematics, programming or engineering subjects apply on top of the institutional floor.

  • UG general entry: Class XII with Mathematics and English through Class XII (used only for pathway routing since Chalmers’ UG is Swedish-medium).
  • PG general entry: Bachelor’s degree of at least three years (180 ECTS) in Science, Engineering, Technology or Architecture.
  • PG programme-specific: Minimum 60% (or CGPA 6.5/10) in the relevant field, plus prerequisite courses named on each MSc page.
  • English 6 equivalent: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5, or TOEFL iBT 90 total with no section below 20.
English Test Minimum Overall Per-band Floor
IELTS Academic 6.5 5.5 in each section
TOEFL iBT 90 20 in written section
Cambridge C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency 180 (grade C) Accepted with certificate

Chalmers IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Chalmers grants exemption from an English test only where prior university studies were conducted entirely in English at a recognised institution. For Indian applicants, a bare Medium of Instruction letter from an Indian university is rarely sufficient on its own — the transcript must show every course was taught and examined in English, and the institution must be on Sweden’s list of recognised English-medium providers. Most Indian applicants submit an IELTS or TOEFL score to avoid a case-by-case ruling.

Chalmers University of Technology PG Programs and English Scores

Chalmers offers around 40 MSc programmes fully taught in English, spanning core engineering, data and computing, life sciences, architecture and business. The base tuition for these programmes starts at SEK 140,000 (around INR 14.13 Lakhs) per year for non-EU/EEA students, with the exact figure varying by school; see the detailed fee breakdown for per-programme tuition and living-cost estimates.

Chalmers University of Technology Bachelor’s Pathway

Chalmers’ Bachelor’s programmes are taught in Swedish and require the applicant to hold Swedish upper-secondary English 6 plus proficiency in Swedish. There is no English-medium three-year Bachelor’s route for Indian applicants at present. Indian students who wish to study at Chalmers usually complete a Bachelor’s in India first, then apply directly to an MSc programme in the Autumn round.

Pathway Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
Direct MSc entry (recommended) 2 years 3-year Indian Bachelor’s in a relevant field with 180 ECTS equivalent IELTS 6.5
Chalmers Bachelor’s (Swedish-taught) 3 years Class XII + Swedish upper-secondary equivalence + Swedish language Not applicable
Pre-Master’s via partner institution 1 year Class XII with strong Maths and Science; used as bridge to MSc IELTS 6.0

Planning note: A Class XII student targeting Chalmers should plan the MSc route, not a direct Bachelor’s transfer. The efficient sequence is a 3-year Indian BTech or BSc, then apply to Chalmers in the Autumn round of the final Bachelor’s year.

Chalmers Application Process on Universityadmissions.se

The application is a two-track process. You apply on the national portal, then send a small parallel packet to Chalmers only for programme-specific documents such as CV, motivation letter and summary sheet. Missing either track voids the application.

  1. Create your account on Universityadmissions.se after the Autumn 2027 cycle opens in mid-October 2026 and rank up to four master’s programmes in priority order.
  2. Pay the application fee of SEK 900 (around INR 9,081) on Universityadmissions.se by 1 February 2027 via international card payment or bank transfer.
  3. Upload academic documents including transcripts, degree certificate (if issued) and English test score to your Universityadmissions.se account before the document deadline of 1 February 2027.
  4. Complete the Chalmers-specific submission on the Chalmers document upload portal with CV, motivation letter for each programme choice, summary sheet and letters of recommendation.
  5. Track your application on Universityadmissions.se; qualification status is confirmed before selection begins.
  6. Receive selection results around 26 March 2027 for the Autumn intake.
  7. Reply to your admission offer within the portal’s reply deadline (usually 7 to 10 days) to keep your seat.

Before you apply: The Chalmers parallel packet has its own deadline that mirrors the national deadline. Submitting only on Universityadmissions.se without uploading the CV and motivation letter to the Chalmers portal is the most common reason Indian applications are rejected without review.

Chalmers Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline

Chalmers publishes selection results on Universityadmissions.se in late March, following a common national timeline for Swedish universities. Offers are ranked by programme choice: if you are admitted to your first choice, all lower choices are automatically closed. Conditional offers apply where the Bachelor’s degree certificate has not yet been issued at the time of application.

  • First selection results: Around 26 March 2027, published on Universityadmissions.se.
  • Reply-required window: Usually 7 to 10 days after the results release; missing it forfeits the offer.
  • Second selection results: Early April 2027 for reserve-list movement.
  • Conditional offers: Issued when the final Bachelor’s transcript is pending; must be cleared by the semester start.
  • Deferral policy: Chalmers does not typically defer admission for non-EU applicants; a new application in the next Autumn cycle is required.

Documents Required for Chalmers University of Technology

Two document sets travel with the application — one to Universityadmissions.se for the national qualification check, and one to Chalmers for programme-level selection. All documents must be in English or officially translated, with a certified translation attached to the original.

  • Passport bio-page copy valid for the entire duration of study.
  • Class XII certificate and mark sheet from CBSE, ISC or the relevant state board.
  • Bachelor’s degree transcripts for all completed semesters, uploaded before the document deadline.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate or provisional degree letter if the final award is pending.
  • English test score report from IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT or an equivalent accepted test.
  • Curriculum Vitae in the Chalmers-preferred format, uploaded to the Chalmers document portal.
  • Motivation letter tailored to each programme choice, no longer than one A4 page.
  • Summary sheet mapping prerequisite courses to your Bachelor’s syllabus.
  • Two letters of recommendation from academic references, on institutional letterhead.
  • Application fee receipt from Universityadmissions.se as proof of payment.

Chalmers University of Technology Acceptance Rate

Chalmers does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Programme-level admission data from the university’s own selection statistics indicate that non-EU applicants face selective competition, especially in data, computing and electrical engineering tracks. The estimated selection rate across MSc programmes for international applicants is 15% to 25%, based on competitive-intake programme patterns and Swedish national round data — Chalmers does not publish an official institutional figure.

Chalmers Acceptance Rate by Field

Data-heavy MSc tracks such as Data Science and AI, Computer Science and Software Engineering typically show the lowest admission rates because of high global demand for a fixed seat count. Materials, Production and Sustainable Energy programmes are relatively less crowded and can admit a larger share of qualifying non-EU applicants.

Sweden Student Residence Permit Process

Indian students admitted to Chalmers apply for a Swedish student residence permit (not a visa) through the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket). The permit is granted for the full duration of the MSc programme and doubles as a study permit and Schengen entry document. Applications open once the admission letter is issued in March or April 2027.

You submit the online application on the Migrationsverket portal, pay the permit fee of SEK 1,500 (around INR 15,135), and prove financial means of SEK 10,584 per month (around INR 1,06,793) for 10 months of the year. Biometrics are captured at VFS Global or the Swedish Embassy in New Delhi. Once in Sweden, students register at the Skatteverket tax office to receive a personnummer, which is needed for banking, healthcare and the local student ID.

2026 update: Migrationsverket’s Sweden-wide processing time for student permits from India runs 6 to 10 weeks in peak season. Apply within a week of receiving your admission letter to keep an August or September arrival intact.

Tips and Checklist for Chalmers University of Technology Admissions

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Chalmers over recent Autumn rounds. Follow the timeline strictly — the single national deadline leaves no room for late submissions.

  • Book your IELTS by early November 2026 so the report reaches the portal well ahead of the 1 February 2027 document cut-off.
  • Request university transcripts eight weeks in advance since Indian universities often take 4 to 6 weeks to issue official English copies.
  • Rank strategically: place your realistic first choice at rank 1 because admission to a higher choice closes all lower ones automatically.
  • Map your prerequisite courses one-by-one on the Chalmers summary sheet — vague matches often trigger a not-qualified verdict.
  • Write four distinct motivation letters if you rank four programmes; generic templates get flagged in selection.
  • Pay the SEK 900 application fee from an internationally-enabled card early to avoid last-week payment failures on Universityadmissions.se.
  • Start the residence permit application within one week of the March 2027 admission letter to secure an August arrival.
  • Confirm scholarship eligibility in parallel — the Avancez and IPOET nominations are tied to the same application, not a separate form.

Chalmers rewards precise applications: a matched prerequisite grid, ranked programme choices, and one crisp motivation letter per choice will do more for your outcome than a high IELTS overall or extra recommendation letters.

FAQs

Ques. When does Chalmers open master’s applications for the Autumn 2027 intake?

  • In the application process, there will be a page dedicated to the scholarships available. These vary from course to course and also depends on what country the student is from. For example, Volvo provides 100 % scholarship for some students from India and China only, application for this can be done from the course application process itself.
  • There is also some scholarships that provided 70 % tuition fee reduction , but again they vary from course to course, but will appear during the university application process.

  • I did not apply for or receive any scholarship. I know there are multiple scholarships available. Some of them pay only for the flight tickets up and down. Some covered fees for 1 year and others were a 50% discount.
  • There are also some special scholarships given by Scania, which include the tuition fee, Internship and guaranteed Thesis. These are very competitive but I think around 500 students get scholarships across all the categories.

Scholarship

  • For every phd student there is a fixed salary. but for master's students, they can apply for scholarships and i am not sure about the ratio per year but my friends have applied, and as they were doing their master's, all 3 of them got it.
  • It just depends on what percentage you get. some of them got more, some less. But most of them easily got part-time jobs here and they can pay off their educational loan as well.

Overview

I chose Chalmers University because of my advisor. For a Ph.D., more than the university an alignment with your advisor is necessary and I felt a great connection with my prospective advisor, the university did not have a language barrier for most courses and that helped me with choosing it. Apart from my advisor, my prospective research group was also very strong.

Scholarship

Ph.D. students have a salaried position at a university in Sweden. I get paid 30k SEK / month.
