Indian applicants need a completed bachelor’s degree from a recognised university plus English proficiency at the university’s standard level.
- Bachelor’s degree: Four-year Indian bachelor’s with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended); three-year bachelors are accepted from recognised Indian universities.

- Programme-specific: Business master’s require 90 ECTS in business subjects; MS Finance requires calculus, statistics and econometrics.
- Waiver: Indian applicants with English-medium Class 12 from CBSE, ICSE or IB do not qualify for English test waiver at the University of Gothenburg.
Key insight: Sweden does not require an APS certificate, unlike Germany, but the university insists on the Indian bachelor’s provisional certificate and consolidated marksheet delivered as originals by post.
University of Gothenburg Acceptance Rate 2027
The University of Gothenburg acceptance rate sits at 38% (estimated) across all programmes, with English-taught master’s for non-EU applicants running competitive at roughly 30-40% depending on faculty. Business, finance and data-science tracks trend tighter than humanities.
MS Applied Data Science is among the most competitive tracks, while MS Logistics and Transport Management is comparatively more accessible for Indian applicants with a business or engineering background.
Reality check: Selection at Gothenburg University is merit-based on the bachelor’s transcript, so a strong CGPA and clear programme-specific prerequisites matter more than test scores or work experience.

|---|---|---|
| QS World | 2027: #225 | 2026: #202 |
| THE World | 2026: #201-250 | 2025: #201-250 |

University of Gothenburg Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
University of Gothenburg does not publish a central placement rate, but Swedish labour market data shows strong absorption of its master’s graduates into Nordic industry, particularly in the Gothenburg region.
- Median starting salary (Sweden, MS graduates): SEK 42,000 per month (INR 3.61 lakh per month, market median)
- Handelshögskolan (School of Business) alumni: hired by Volvo, SKF, AstraZeneca, Ericsson and Handelsbanken across Gothenburg and Stockholm
- Post-study visa: 12-month job-search residence permit after graduation, extendable to 24 months under 2022 Aliens Act reforms
- Career support: Central Careers Service runs CV workshops, Nordic employer fairs and a LinkedIn-integrated mentor programme
- Median post-MBA salary: University of Gothenburg does not run a full-time MBA, so this metric is not applicable
Insider note: Indian graduates in Gothenburg pipeline into Volvo Cars, Volvo Group, Polestar and AstraZeneca R&D through summer internships that convert to full-time roles by the second year of study.
University of Gothenburg vs Peer Universities
Indian students shortlist Gothenburg alongside other Nordic public research universities and Sweden’s business-heavy peers.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (SEK / INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Gothenburg | #225 | SEK 129,000 / 11.09 lakh | Business and Nordic industry pipeline |
| Lund University | #71 | SEK 145,000 / 12.47 lakh | Strongest Swedish brand internationally |
| Uppsala University | #87 | SEK 145,000 / 12.47 lakh | Oldest Nordic university; heritage weight |
| Stockholm University | #167 | SEK 140,000 / 12.04 lakh | Capital-city location; social sciences depth |
| Chalmers University of Technology | #174 | SEK 150,000 / 12.90 lakh | Same city as Gothenburg; engineering-only focus |
Gothenburg University stands out for the combination of a top-250 QS placement, lower cost of living than Stockholm or Uppsala, and direct co-location with Chalmers and Volvo’s global R&D headquarters. For Indian applicants prioritising business, finance or data science over pure engineering, Gothenburg offers stronger programme depth than Chalmers at a similar fee band.
It is not the right fit for applicants set on a pure-engineering master’s or a full-time MBA, where Chalmers next door or Stockholm School of Economics deliver sharper brand recognition and stronger cohort networks for those specific tracks.
University of Gothenburg FAQs
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time at the University of Gothenburg?
Ans. Yes, Sweden places no formal weekly cap on student part-time work provided studies remain the primary activity. Indian students on a residence permit for studies can take on paid work in retail, hospitality or campus roles from day one. Most students target 15 to 20 hours per week during semester and full-time during summer break, earning SEK 130 to SEK 180 per hour.
Ques. Does Gothenburg University waive IELTS for Indian applicants?
Ans. No, the University of Gothenburg does not waive IELTS for Indian applicants studying in English-medium Class 12 boards like CBSE, ICSE or IB. Only university-issued English-medium instruction certificates from a UK, US, Australian, Canadian, Irish or New Zealand institution qualify for waiver. Indian candidates must submit IELTS 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 90 overall or PTE Academic 62 with the university admissions application.
Ques. What is the application fee at Gothenburg University?
Ans. The application fee at Gothenburg University is a one-time SEK 900 (INR 7,740) paid to universityadmissions.se, not to the university directly. The fee covers up to four programme choices across any Swedish university in one intake. EU/EEA citizens and applicants with a permanent Swedish residence permit are exempt from this fee, but Indian applicants must pay it in every cycle.
Ques. Is University of Gothenburg recognised by Indian education loan providers?
Ans. Yes, State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Avanse, InCred, ICICI Bank and Auxilo all recognise Gothenburg University for education loans up to INR 60 lakh. The QS top-250 placement clears the premier-university threshold that most Indian lenders use for collateral-free loans on amounts below INR 40 lakh. Loan applications need the university admission letter, i20-equivalent Migrationsverket residence permit, and Indian co-applicant KYC documents.
Ques. How does Gothenburg University verify Indian bachelor’s transcripts?
Ans. Gothenburg University routes Indian transcript verification through Sweden’s central admissions body universityadmissions.se, which requires original sealed transcripts posted from the Indian university’s controller of examinations office. Photocopies, scanned uploads or email transcripts are not accepted. Provisional certificates and consolidated marksheets are both required. Verification typically takes four to six weeks, so applicants must dispatch documents by mid-December for the Autumn 2027 deadline.
Ques. What are the dependent visa rules for Indian students at Gothenburg?
Ans. Indian students at Gothenburg University can bring a spouse and children under 18 on a family-member residence permit. Financial proof of SEK 3,500 per month for a spouse and SEK 2,100 per month per child is required in addition to the student’s own SEK 10,584 requirement. Spouses receive full work rights from day one. Both parents and unmarried siblings do not qualify as dependents under Swedish immigration rules.
Ques. When does the Autumn 2027 admission cycle open at Gothenburg University?
Ans. The Autumn 2027 admission cycle at Gothenburg University is expected to open on 15 October 2026 on universityadmissions.se, based on the prior year’s cycle pattern. The application deadline is expected around 15 January 2027, with the SEK 900 application fee and supporting document deadline on 1 February 2027. Admission results are published in early April 2027, and residence permit applications should follow immediately after acceptance.
Ques. Does Gothenburg University offer conditional admission for Indian applicants?
Ans. Yes, Gothenburg University issues conditional offers to Indian applicants whose final bachelor’s marksheet or IELTS score is pending at the January application deadline. Conditional offers list specific requirements such as a minimum final CGPA or a resubmitted English test. Applicants must upload the pending document to universityadmissions.se by early July 2027 to convert the conditional offer into an unconditional admission before the Autumn intake starts.

There is an International Office and Service Center which provides every details and answer any query. If any teacher is not available they will ask them to help us. The International Office provides complete information like if you have any healthcare issue then they will tell you where to proceed and they provide information regarding accommodation or if you want to get a job then how to proceed further. Overall it was a nice experience here and it helped me to explore more.
