Luleå University of Technology Application Deadlines
Luleå University of Technology (LTU) runs two intakes each year, and every international application is routed through Sweden’s national platform universityadmissions.se rather than an LTU form. Autumn is the primary intake, when the majority of LTU’s English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes open. Spring carries a smaller programme slate, mostly for continuing or Swedish-taught study. Dates below are per the official universityadmissions.se key dates page for the current published cycle.
Luleå University of Technology’s primary intake for Indian students is Autumn (August/September start) — most master’s and bachelor’s programmes open here.
| Intake | Level | App Opens | Deadline | App Fee | Portal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary intake — Autumn 2027 (first round) | UG and PG | 16 October 2026 | 15 January 2027 | SEK 900 (INR 9,018) | universityadmissions.se |
| Autumn 2027 (second round) | UG and PG (Swedish-taught mostly) | 16 March 2027 | 15 April 2027 | SEK 900 (INR 9,018) | universityadmissions.se |
| Spring 2027 (first round) | UG and PG | 1 June 2026 (Closed 17 August 2026) | 17 August 2026 (Closed) | SEK 900 (INR 9,018) | universityadmissions.se |
| Spring 2027 (second round) | UG and PG (Swedish-taught mostly) | 15 September 2026 | 15 October 2026 | SEK 900 (INR 9,018) | universityadmissions.se |
The application fee of SEK 900 (around INR 9,018) is charged once per semester by universityadmissions.se, no matter how many LTU programmes you include. Fee and documentation must be received by 2 February 2027 for the Autumn 2027 first round; late payments push your file to reserve-list status and are considered only if seats remain.
Planning note: Indian applicants should target the Autumn first round even if you are eligible for spring, because it leaves enough time to secure the Swedish residence permit before the semester starts.
Luleå University of Technology Eligibility Requirements for Indian Students
Eligibility at LTU has two layers — an academic floor that Sweden’s central admissions system applies uniformly, and a programme-specific layer that individual master’s and engineering programmes add on top. Facts below come from the official LTU admissions page and the universityadmissions.se entry-requirements portal for Indian applicants.
LTU Bachelor’s Eligibility for Indian Students
- Academic: Class XII (Higher Secondary Certificate) from a recognised Indian board with an average of 65 percent or higher.
- Subject-specific: Engineering bachelor’s programmes require Mathematics and Physics through Class XII; Chemistry required for some tracks.
- English 6: IELTS 6.5 (no band below 5.5), TOEFL iBT 90 (Writing 20), or PTE Academic 62 (Writing 61).
LTU Master’s Eligibility for Indian Students
- Academic: A Bachelor’s degree of at least 180 ECTS (three years) from a recognised Indian institution, in a subject relevant to the chosen master’s.
- GPA floor: Most engineering master’s expect Bachelor’s at 60 percent or higher, or CGPA 6.5 on a 10-point scale.
- English 6: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, or PTE Academic 62 — same institution-wide floor as bachelor’s.
- Programme prerequisites: Individual master’s often require named credit thresholds — for example, Data Science requires at least 90 ECTS in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Statistics.
Luleå University of Technology IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Indian applicants can be exempt from submitting IELTS/TOEFL if they can prove English 6 equivalence through prior studies. The most common path is completing a Bachelor’s degree in India where English was the sole language of instruction, certified by a signed Medium of Instruction letter from the university. Universityadmissions.se evaluates each case; the exemption is not automatic. Applicants whose Bachelor’s transcript does not state the medium of instruction should submit both an MOI letter and, as backup, an IELTS or TOEFL score.
Insider note: Sweden’s admissions system is access-oriented — it admits most applicants who meet the stated academic and English floors, then ranks eligible candidates by academic merit only if seats fill. Meeting the minimum is often enough for programmes with wider seat counts.
Luleå University of Technology PG Programs and English Scores
LTU offers over 20 English-taught master’s programmes, weighted heavily towards engineering, space, mining, and applied technology. Duration is uniformly two years (120 ECTS) with a handful of one-year (60 ECTS) tracks. Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Luleå University of Technology page for your chosen program before applying.
Luleå University of Technology UG Programs and Entry Requirements
LTU’s English-taught bachelor’s list is narrow — only a handful of programmes admit international students at UG level, all clustered in games, engineering, and mining. Duration is three years (180 ECTS). Base tuition for UG programmes is SEK 140,000 per year (around INR 14.03 Lakhs).
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSc Computer Game Programming | 3 years | Class XII with Mathematics studied through Class XII | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 90 |

| BSc Mineral Resource Engineering | 3 years | Class XII with Mathematics and Physics; Chemistry recommended | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 90 |
Indian Class XII applicants must translate their percentage into the Swedish grading scale used by universityadmissions.se — the system performs this conversion automatically once transcripts are uploaded and does not require you to state a Swedish equivalent yourself.
Luleå University of Technology PhD Admissions
LTU treats PhD positions as paid research employment rather than a tuition-based programme. Doctoral candidates are hired against a specific vacancy tied to a supervisor and funded project, not admitted from an open application pool. This is the same model used across Swedish research universities and applies to Indian applicants equally.
How LTU PhD Positions Open
- Vacancy-based: Every PhD position is posted individually on ltu.se under Vacancies with a clearly stated research area, supervisor, and application deadline.
- No tuition: PhD candidates pay no fee; they receive a monthly salary as full LTU employees.
- Duration: Four years full-time for a doctoral degree, or two years for a licentiate.
- Eligibility: A completed master’s degree (120 ECTS) with at least 60 ECTS at second-cycle level in the subject area.
LTU PhD Salary and Funding
PhD students at LTU are employed on a doctoral studentship, drawing a monthly salary that rises with completed course credits — starting at around SEK 32,300 per month (around INR 3.24 Lakhs) for the 2026 academic year and stepping up through the four-year contract. Health insurance, pension contributions, and paid vacation apply as with any Swedish employment. See funding for Indian students for wider LTU funding options.
Reality check: There is no LTU PhD "admissions round" through universityadmissions.se — the January deadline discussed elsewhere in this article does not apply to doctoral study.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Luleå University of Technology page for your chosen program before applying.
Luleå University of Technology Application Process on universityadmissions.se
All LTU international applications route through Sweden’s central platform. LTU does not accept applications on its own portal. The full workflow, from account creation to seat acceptance, sits inside universityadmissions.se.
- Create an account on universityadmissions.se — the platform opens the Autumn 2027 cycle on 16 October 2026. Register using your passport name exactly as it appears on your document.
- Select up to four programmes ranked by priority — you can list LTU programmes and programmes from other Swedish universities in the same application; ranking matters because you can be admitted to only one.
- Pay the application fee of SEK 900 (around INR 9,018) on the universityadmissions.se portal by 2 February 2027; card payment is the fastest route.
- Upload supporting documents — Class XII certificate, Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate, passport bio page, English test score, plus programme-specific documents like a portfolio for game art or a CV for International Business Strategy.
- Track document status on universityadmissions.se — the system displays "OK" beside each document once verified; incomplete files receive a specific status flag.
- Receive the notification of selection results around 26 March 2027 for master’s, 31 March 2027 for bachelor’s applicants.
- Reply to your offer by the deadline listed on your Notification of Selection Results — failing to reply forfeits your seat.
- Pay the first tuition instalment when LTU issues an invoice via Ladok; the deadline is stated on the invoice itself.
- Apply for the Sweden student residence permit through Migrationsverket as soon as your offer is confirmed.
Luleå University of Technology Admission Decisions Timeline
Sweden runs a single notification day per level per cycle, not rolling decisions. Every Autumn 2027 first-round applicant to a master’s programme at LTU learns the outcome on the same date, and the reply window is short.
- Master’s results: 26 March 2027 for the Autumn 2027 first round.
- Bachelor’s results: 31 March 2027 for the Autumn 2027 first round.
- Reply deadline: stated on your Notification of Selection Results, typically two to three weeks after the results date; missing it forfeits the seat.
- Conditional offers: LTU issues these to applicants awaiting final Bachelor’s transcripts; you must submit the final document by the university’s stated cut-off to convert the offer.
- Deferral: LTU does not automatically defer offers to a later intake; you must re-apply in the next cycle.
Luleå University of Technology Documents Required for Indian Applicants
Every document below uploads to the applicant account on universityadmissions.se as scans; LTU does not receive paper documents directly. All non-English documents must include an official English translation. This list is paperwork only — academic scores and English test floors are covered in the Eligibility section.
- Passport bio page: a clear scan with validity extending at least until 2028 for Autumn 2027 applicants.
- Class XII certificate and mark sheet: from your Indian board, certified as a true copy.
- Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated mark sheet: required for master’s applicants, showing all semesters.
- English proficiency score report: IELTS, TOEFL iBT, or PTE Academic, or a Medium of Instruction letter for waiver claims.
- CV or résumé: required for business and management master’s; recommended for engineering master’s.
- Programme-specific documents: portfolio for Computer Graphics or Music Performance, statement of purpose for International Business Strategy, letters of recommendation where the programme page requests them.
- Passport-style photograph: a recent digital photo meeting Schengen visa specifications, needed later for the residence permit stage.
Luleå University of Technology Acceptance Rate
Luleå University of Technology does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. The Swedish higher-education system is fundamentally access-oriented — most eligible applicants who meet the stated requirements are admitted, and competitive ranking kicks in only when a programme fills.
LTU Acceptance Rate Estimate for Indian Students
Third-party estimates place the overall rate in the 65 to 75 percent band, based on Sweden’s access-oriented admissions model and the moderate seat pressure across LTU’s English-taught intake. High-competition programmes such as MSc Space Science and Technology and MSc Data Science sit closer to the lower end because applicant volume outstrips seats; broader engineering master’s cluster near the top of the band.
What Drives Admission Decisions at LTU
When a programme fills, universityadmissions.se ranks eligible applicants by academic merit — Bachelor’s GPA, subject-specific credit depth, and completion of listed prerequisite courses. English scores above the 6.5 floor do not add ranking weight; they only qualify or disqualify you. Portfolios and auditions for creative programmes are scored separately and carry decisive weight for those tracks.
Insider note: The 65 to 75 percent band means meeting LTU’s stated requirements gives you a strong shot — but this only holds if your Bachelor’s includes the exact 90 ECTS in the required subject area. Credit-count gaps are the single most common cause of Indian applicants being marked ineligible.
Sweden Student Residence Permit Process
Programmes longer than three months require a Sweden residence permit for studies, granted by the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket). This is a country-level permit, not an LTU-issued document — Indian students apply online after receiving the LTU admission offer. New residence permit rules take effect for the Autumn 2027 intake, adding work-hour limits alongside studies, minimum study-result thresholds, and a requirement to notify Migrationsverket of any change of address in Sweden.
Apply online at migrationsverket.se using the admission decision from LTU. Financial proof is SEK 10,584 per month for the length of the permit (around INR 1.06 Lakhs monthly), demonstrated via bank statements, scholarship award letters, or a sponsor undertaking. Comprehensive health insurance covering Sweden is mandatory. The permit fee is SEK 1,500 (around INR 15,030) and processing typically takes 8 to 12 weeks — apply as soon as your LTU offer arrives.
2026 update: Autumn 2027 is the first intake where the new residence permit rules apply, so Indian students should read the Migrationsverket update in full before submitting the permit application.
Tips and Application Checklist for Luleå University of Technology
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Luleå University of Technology, focused on the Autumn 2027 first round and the residence permit sequence that follows.
- Rank strategically, not aspirationally: universityadmissions.se admits you to only one of your four ranked programmes, so list your genuine first choice at the top even if it is competitive.
- Secure the MOI letter early: if you plan to skip IELTS via the waiver, request the Medium of Instruction letter from your Indian university before December 2026 — university registrars slow down in January.
- Pay the SEK 900 fee first: universityadmissions.se does not begin document review until the fee lands, so pay on day one, not after uploading.
- Watch the ECTS credit count: LTU’s 90 ECTS prerequisite in your subject area is strict; audit your Bachelor’s transcript course-by-course before applying.
- Open the application on 16 October 2026: the platform opens at Swedish midnight; Indian applicants get a full working day advantage over later time zones.
- Upload documents by 15 January 2027, not 2 February 2027: the later date is the absolute cut-off, and late uploads sit behind a queue of same-day submissions.
- Book the residence permit appointment slot the day your offer arrives: March-April slots fill within days across Indian VFS Sweden centres.
- Prepare 10 months of financial proof, not 6: Migrationsverket rejects sponsorship statements that fall short of the full study year requirement.
Luleå University of Technology admissions reward preparation more than paperwork volume — meeting the exact ECTS credit floor, submitting the MOI letter or English test on time, and paying the application fee immediately covers most of what stops Indian applicants from being ranked. The Autumn 2027 first round on universityadmissions.se opens 16 October 2026, and the residence permit queue is the single hardest downstream deadline once you hold an offer.

- It was relevant for my interest and within the scope of my bachelor's.
- Subject experts and access to relevant opportunities during course related to space. The professors are knowledgeable and guest lectures are routinely conducted with experts. The university provides many opportunities for students to perform extracurricular activities and goes above and beyond to help students understand the subject.
Dislikes
- The space studies branch is located in Kiruna well over 5 hours away from Luleå, where the university is located. Kiruna serves as a good place for space research thanks to its proximity to ESRANGE, Estrack and IRF. But owing to its remoteness, students can tend to fell overwhelmed and detached from the main university and its activities and attraction.
Overview
LTU provides a unique student experience that can seem surreal owing to the exotic location where it is established. Students can participate in various activities apart from the regular curriculum and have various avenues to reach out to.
