- Standardized entry tests like SAT, GRE or GMAT apply at some universities, not all.
- EmSAT is no longer mandatory but still counts at government-run UAE universities.

English Exams to Study in UAE
Almost every UAE degree needs a valid English test score from an Indian applicant. IELTS and TOEFL are the two most widely accepted options. Universities set the bar based on the level of the course. Undergraduate seats ask for a lower band. Master’s and MBA seats push scores higher. Most bachelor’s programmes ask for an overall IELTS band of 6.0 to 6.5. Master’s courses often ask for 6.5 or 7.0. For TOEFL iBT scores, undergraduate cutoffs sit around 79 to 91. Postgraduate seats need 90 or more.
PTE Academic is accepted at a smaller set of UAE campuses. These include Heriot-Watt University Dubai, University of Birmingham Dubai and Middlesex University Dubai. The Duolingo English Test has narrower acceptance. NYU Abu Dhabi, MBZUAI and AURAK confirm Duolingo scores on their admissions pages. Some universities accept it case by case without publishing a policy.
Which English test to pick
- IELTS: safest bet if your shortlist covers many UAE universities.
- TOEFL: better for American-style universities like AUS and AUD.
- PTE: faster results, useful when deadlines are tight.
- Duolingo: cheapest and quickest, but check university policy first.
Key Insight: If your school was English medium, Khalifa University waives IELTS or TOEFL when your prior degree came from an accredited English-taught institution. Send admissions the transcript letter early.

SAT and ACT for UAE Undergraduate Seats
SAT and ACT are not needed everywhere in the UAE. They mainly apply at American-curriculum universities.American University of Sharjah (AUS) and American University in Dubai (AUD) are the two most cited names. Both accept SAT scores alongside your Class 12 marks.
AUS admits most bachelor’s students with SAT scores between 1250 and 1400. Engineering and architecture seats sit at the top of that band. AUD admits between 1050 and 1350 on the SAT and 20 to 28 on the ACT.
Some tracks at AUS ask for a minimum SAT Math score of 450 from Indian and American curriculum school leavers. That rule targets applicants without a strong quantitative base.
Where SAT is not needed
- Khalifa University does not require SAT for its bachelor’s programmes.
- United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) waives SAT for most tracks.
- Most private universities in Dubai skip SAT and use Class 12 marks plus IELTS.
SAT tests are held six to seven times a year in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Book two months ahead as seats fill fast.

GRE and GMAT for UAE Master’s Courses
GRE covers STEM master’s and GMAT covers most MBA programmes in UAE. Neither is universal, so check the target course page first. GRE is most relevant at Khalifa University for its MS and PhD tracks in engineering and science. Khalifa asks for the test but does not publish a fixed minimum. Strong applicants usually hit 155 or higher on quant.
GMAT is the main entry test for MBAs at AUS, Hult International Business School Dubai and SP Jain School of Global Management. AUS does not publish a hard minimum. Most admits sit at 550 or above. American University in the Emirates is one of the few UAE schools that asks for GRE for its MBA. That is a rare pattern in the UAE market.
Where GRE and GMAT are not needed
- UAEU does not require GRE for its master’s tracks.
- Middlesex University Dubai and Heriot-Watt Dubai waive both for most master’s seats.
- Mid-tier private universities offer waivers based on work experience or a strong bachelor’s GPA.
Key Insight: A GMAT waiver is not a free pass. Universities compensate by asking for a longer statement of purpose and a mandatory interview. Prepare both if you skip the test.
An Indian BTech graduate targeting Khalifa Masters needs IELTS and GRE. That combination is the most common admit profile from Tier-1 Indian engineering colleges.
EmSAT Status at UAE Universities Today
EmSAT is the Emirates Standardized Test run by the UAE Ministry of Education. It used to be mandatory for entry to government universities. The rule changed in November 2024. EmSAT is no longer a hard requirement for Grade 12 students. Universities now set their own criteria and many still accept the test.
EmSAT covers English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Arabic and Computer Science. Students take only the subjects the university asks for. Each subject is scored on a scale up to 1900.
Who benefits from EmSAT
- Indian students living in UAE on a parent-sponsored visa often use EmSAT as a backup.
- Applicants with weak Class 12 English scores can offset with a strong EmSAT English score.
- Students aiming at UAE government universities may still gain a small edge with EmSAT.
The test is now delivered fully online. Students register through the UAE PASS portal linked to their Emirates ID or dependent visa.

NEET Rule for MBBS in UAE
Indian students applying for MBBS in UAE must qualify NEET UG if they plan to return home. That rule comes from the National Medical Commission of India. The NEET UG cutoff is the 50th percentile for General category. That is roughly 138 to 720 marks. For SC, ST and OBC, the cutoff is the 40th percentile at 108 to 137 marks.
UAE medical universities themselves may accept students without NEET. Gulf Medical University in Ajman, University of Sharjah and Mohammed Bin Rashid University use Class 12 marks and their own entrance tests.
What NEET gives you for UAE MBBS
- Eligibility to sit for the NExT exam after graduation to practise in India.
- Access to Indian PG medical seats after your UAE MBBS.
- Compliance with NMC rules if you register as a doctor in India.
What NEET does not cover
- Direct admission into UAE universities, which still need their own entrance rounds.
- Language requirements, since most UAE MBBS programmes still ask for IELTS or TOEFL.
Indian students must be at least 17 years old by December 31 of the admission year. Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English is mandatory. Most UAE MBBS colleges want 75% aggregate marks or higher. MBBS in UAE runs for five to six years. Tuition sits between AED 45,000 and AED 150,000 per year (around INR 11.7 lakh to INR 39.1 lakh).

When to Book Your UAE Study Exams
Timing is the single biggest reason Indian students miss a UAE intake. The rule is simple: finish tests before you open the application.
The UAE has two main intakes for Indian students. Fall intake starts in September. Spring intake starts in January.
| Intake | Application Window | Book Exam By |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2027 (September) | December 2026 to May 2027 | August to October 2026 |
| Spring 2027 (January) | June 2026 to October 2026 | June to July 2026 |
American University of Sharjah lists June 29, 2026 as its early file completion date for Fall applicants. Applications received after May 21 may go on a waiting list. Merit scholarship slots at Khalifa, AUS and Heriot-Watt Dubai often close by April or May.
Key Insight: Book two attempts, not one. Score below your target on the first sitting and you have room to retake. Many Indian students lose a full year because they left IELTS to the last month.
Cost and Loans Around UAE Study Exams
Test fees are only a small share of your total UAE study budget. Tuition, visa and living costs are the real weight.Khalifa University charges AED 2,500 per credit. A four-year BSc adds up to AED 325,000 (INR 84.9 lakh). Living costs in Dubai run about AED 4,240 per month (around INR 1.1 lakh) plus rent. The UAE student visa costs AED 3,000 to AED 10,000 (INR 78,000 to INR 2.6 lakh) across the full permit cycle.
Indian lenders now cover UAE tuition well. HDFC Credila and Avanse both offer collateral-free education loans up to INR 80 lakh to INR 1 crore for eligible profiles. SBI Global Ed-Vantage runs the lowest interest rates at 8.65 to 10.65% for secured loans. Bank of Baroda starts at 10.05% for UAE.
- SBI Global Ed-Vantage: lowest rate, needs collateral, longer approval time.
- HDFC Credila: fastest turnaround at 3 to 5 days, no collateral up to INR 45 lakh.
- Avanse: flexible on Tier-2 college profiles, rates from 11 percent.
- Prodigy Finance: non-collateral loans in USD for select UAE MBAs.
Add a 5 to 8% currency buffer to your total budget. The rupee has weakened against the AED across 2025 and 2026. Loan repayment starts one year after course end for most lenders.

Exams to study in UAE are not one size fits all. The mix depends on the university tier, the course level and your own Class 12 background. Most Indian students need IELTS or TOEFL plus one entrance test for their target course. Book tests early, plan two attempts and match every score with the published cutoff. That single habit is the difference between a smooth admit and a delayed intake.
