Amity Ph.D. Biotechnology FAQs
Ques. Can I pursue this Ph.D. programme while working full-time?
Ans. Yes, absolutely! This programme is specifically designed for working professionals. Classes are scheduled in evenings (6:00 PM - 9:00 PM) and weekends (Saturday-Sunday) to accommodate your work schedule. Many of our students successfully balance their jobs with their doctoral research. However, you should allocate at least 15-20 hours per week for coursework and research activities.
Ques. What is the minimum work experience required, and can freshers apply?
Ans. The ideal candidate has 2+ years of relevant work experience in biotechnology or life sciences. However, exceptional fresh graduates with outstanding academic records (70%+ in Bachelor's and Master's) may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Fresh applicants should demonstrate strong research aptitude and clear research goals during the interview.
Ques. How is the research thesis evaluated, and what is the publication requirement?
Ans. Your thesis is evaluated by internal examiners and external experts in your research field. The evaluation process includes thesis submission, presentation, and viva voce examination. While publication is not mandatory for degree completion, we strongly encourage students to publish their research findings in peer-reviewed journals. Most of our graduates publish 2-3 papers during their programme duration, which significantly enhances their career prospects.
Ques. What are the laboratory facilities available, and can I conduct research at my workplace?
Ans. Amity University provides state-of-the-art laboratory facilities including PCR machines, HPLC, mass spectrometry, cell culture facilities, and bioinformatics labs. While most research is conducted on campus, we do allow students to conduct certain research components at their workplace if it aligns with their research topic and meets our quality standards. Prior approval from the research supervisor and department is required.
Ques. What is the job placement scenario after completing the Ph.D., and are there international opportunities?
Ans. Our placement rate is 92% with an average salary of ₹8-12 LPA. Graduates work in leading pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, and biotech startups. We have strong industry connections and conduct regular placement drives. Additionally, 35% of our alumni pursue postdoctoral research abroad in countries like USA, UK, Germany, and Australia. We provide guidance for international postdoc applications and visa processes.
Ques. How much time should I dedicate to coursework versus research, and what happens if I need to take a break?
Ans. In the first year, you'll spend approximately 60% time on coursework and 40% on research. From the second year onwards, the focus shifts to 20% coursework and 80% research. The programme is designed to be completed in 3.5 years with consistent effort. If you need to take a break due to personal or professional reasons, you can apply for a semester extension (up to 2 semesters) without additional fees. However, the total programme duration cannot exceed 6 years as per university regulations.
