SASTRA B.Tech + M.Tech Biotechnology FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between the 5-year Integrated B.Tech + M.Tech Biotechnology and the standalone B.Tech Biotechnology at SASTRA?

Ans. The 5-year Integrated programme awards both B.Tech and M.Tech degrees upon completion, covering advanced research-oriented topics in the 4th and 5th years. The standalone B.Tech Biotechnology is a 4-year programme. The integrated route saves one year compared to doing B.Tech and M.Tech separately, and is better suited for students aiming for research or PhD programmes.

Ques. Is Mathematics compulsory for admission to this programme?

Ans. No. Mathematics is not mandatory for the Integrated B.Tech + M.Tech Biotechnology programme at SASTRA. Students who have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (without Mathematics) in Class XII are eligible to apply.

Ques. What is the total fee for the 5-year Integrated Biotechnology programme at SASTRA?

Ans. The total fee (tuition + one-time charges) comes to approximately Rs. 9.49 lakhs over 5 years, factoring in the 5% annual increase in tuition from Year 2 onwards. This does not include hostel and food charges, which are optional and charged separately.

Ques. From which semester are students eligible for campus placements in this programme?

Ans. Students in the integrated programme are eligible for campus placements from the 7th semester (start of Year 4). This allows them to explore industry opportunities while still completing their studies.

Ques. What are the career options after completing the Integrated B.Tech + M.Tech Biotechnology from SASTRA?

Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in pharmaceutical companies (Biocon, Dr. Reddy's, Sun Pharma), biotech research organisations (Syngene, Jubilant Biosys), food and agricultural biotechnology, and clinical research. Many graduates also pursue PhD programmes at IITs, IISc, and international universities. The M.Tech degree also makes graduates eligible for lecturer/assistant professor positions in colleges.

Ques. Can a student exit after 4 years with just a B.Tech degree from this integrated programme?

Ans. The programme is designed as a 5-year integrated course leading to both B.Tech and M.Tech degrees. While the university's academic regulations govern exit options, students are generally expected to complete the full 5-year programme. It is advisable to check with the SASTRA admissions office for the latest policy on early exit options.

SASTRA: 1 Answered Question

SASTRA University, Thanjavur: Does your CGPA really matter at the end of your course?

Sounak Banerjee
Siddhartha BoseB.Tech Biotechnology, SASTRA University, Thanjavur

Yes, CGPA at SASTRA does matter, especially if you have low CGPA. It will affect your placement and as well as other things. But if you are proficient in programming then you can get into companies like Google without CGPA being a problem. If you have a low GPA, you will miss out on the following things.

  • ACRS: If you want to finish your course in the 7th semester, you will need a GPA of 7.5+. To get the course you want you will need to have around an 8.5 GPA.
  • Although most companies set 7.0 GPA requirements. Most dream companies ask for a GPA of 8+.
  • You won’t be able to go to your graduation ceremony, since SASTRA only invites students with GPAs of 7.5+.

Apart from these above reasons, GPA matters for other reasons too. While hiring, companies look at your GPA, not to evaluate how much you know. Rather they want to how responsible and committed you are.
