What FSU Announced with IITs and IISc

FSU used the Florida State University India research partnership to launch its first formal, funded scholar exchange with India. The pilot ran from July 5 to July 31, 2026. Eight faculty from India’s top four science and tech institutions spent four weeks in Tallahassee.

The scholars came from IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur and IISc Bengaluru. All four rank among the world’s top 250 for engineering and technology in QS 2026. This is not a symbolic MoU. Each visitor was paired with an FSU faculty member and worked on a shared research plan.

The program sits inside FSU’s Office of the Provost. The Learning Systems Institute runs the day-to-day work. Farrukh Alvi, senior associate provost for Strategic Initiatives, oversees it. Vilma Fuentes directs it.

FSU has framed VSPP around three parts:

• Research residency that covers lab time, data sharing and joint publications.
• Innovation and policy exchange through FSU’s engineering and innovation ecosystem.
• Campus and community engagement with academic leaders across colleges.

Note: A pilot with named scholars and paired faculty is a stronger signal than a broad MoU. It usually leads to joint grant proposals within 12 to 18 months.

Which Indian Scholars Joined FSU

Eight named scholars joined the FSU India research partnership pilot. They came from four institutions, with two to three visitors from each. The list includes senior faculty in engineering, biomedical science and quantum physics. Public names in the inaugural cohort include:

• Amit Mehndiratta, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, IIT Delhi.
• Debopam Das, Professor of Aerospace and Sustainable Energy Engineering, IIT Kanpur.
• Bhaskar Kanseri, quantum optics researcher, IIT Delhi.
• Namrata Gundiah, mechanical and biomedical engineering, IISc.
• Tufan Kumar Guha, materials and manufacturing research.
• Mohammed Ibrahim Sugarno, aerospace and engineering.
• Posanjit Das, applied engineering research.
• Nidish Narayanaa Balaji, mechanical engineering.

Each was matched with an FSU faculty peer whose lab and grant profile matched their work. Most FSU hosts came from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. The Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship and the FSU College of Medicine also placed hosts.

Research Areas in the FSU India Partnership

The Florida State University India research partnership covers five main research clusters this year. All five map to FSU’s existing strengths and India’s engineering pipeline.

The declared focus areas are:

• Aerospace engineering, including sustainable propulsion.
• Biomedical engineering, with a medical imaging angle.
• Quantum optics, tied to FSU’s physics and materials labs.
• Advanced materials and additive manufacturing.
• Entrepreneurship and innovation policy, through the Jim Moran College.

These pair well with FAMU-FSU College of Engineering strengths. The college sits inside Innovation Park, next to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. That gives Indian visiting scholars access to instruments they may not have back home.

Why these five areas

FSU picked areas where its labs are already funded, and India has strong doctoral talent. Aerospace, quantum optics, and biomedical are all fields where IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, and IISc publish heavily. Overlap in interests means grant proposals can start faster.

How the FSU VSPP Program Works

The FSU VSPP is a faculty-first research program, not a student scholarship. The pilot in July 2026 brought Indian professors to FSU for a fixed one-month residency. FSU covered the visit costs and paired each visitor with a host.

The workflow, based on FSU’s public program page, runs like this:

• Nomination by partner institution: IIT or IISc names a faculty candidate.
• FSU match: the Learning Systems Institute pairs the scholar with an FSU host.
• Residency: four weeks of lab work, data sharing and drafting joint papers.
• Follow-up: partners submit joint grant applications after the visit.

What VSPP gives you

• Structured lab time with an FSU faculty peer.
• Access to Innovation Park labs and shared facilities.
• A route to co-authored papers and joint grant proposals.

What VSPP does not cover

• PhD or MS admission slots for students at IITs.
• Tuition waivers for prospective Indian applicants.
• Direct F-1 student visa sponsorship.

Student exchange is a stated future outcome, but not yet open. If a joint MS or PhD track opens, it will almost always run through IIT or IISc as the nominating institution first.

Why This Matters for Indian Students

FSU tuition for Indian students runs from around USD 19,000 to USD 47,000 a year depending on the program. The university takes Indian applicants for Fall, Spring and Summer intakes. Acceptance rate sits near 25%.

• Minimum GPA: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, roughly 85%.

• Application fee: USD 30 to USD 90 depending on program.
• Test scores: GRE or GMAT for most graduate programs.
