Southeast Missouri State University Acceptance Rate 2027
Southeast Missouri State University acceptance rate stands at 65% for the 2026 Best Colleges cycle as reported to US News, making it a moderately selective public regional university. The figure is derived from institution-reported admission and enrolment data.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2025-2026 | 65% | Tighter |
| 2024-2025 | 69% | Slightly tighter |

The rate reflects overall admissions and includes domestic applicants. International applicants who meet the published academic and English thresholds see admission rates in the 70% to 80% range in practice.
Reality check: A 65% acceptance rate looks welcoming, but scholarship allocation is far more competitive. Indian applicants targeting the International Achievement Award should aim for a Class 12 average of 80% and above or CGPA 8.0/10 to be shortlisted early in the cycle.

Southeast Missouri State University Campus, Facilities and Student Life
SEMO’s main campus sits on 328 acres in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, a river city 190 km south of St. Louis and served by a regional airport with connections to Chicago and Dallas.
- Location and transit: Compact walkable campus; SEMO Shuttle links residence halls and the River Campus arts centre. Most Indian students use bicycles or the free RedRoute shuttle.
- Housing: 21 residence halls; on-campus housing guaranteed for all incoming international students who apply by June 1 for Fall and November 1 for Spring.
- Facilities: $75 million River Campus (arts), Show Me Center arena, Student Recreation Center with aquatic centre, Kent Library with 24-hour study zones.
- Indian community: 683 international students from 60+ countries; active Indian Subcontinent Student Association hosts Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events.
What Indian students say: Cape Girardeau is quiet compared to Chicago or Boston, but this keeps rent low and study focus high. The Indian grocery in town is limited, so many students drive to St. Louis every two months to stock up on Indian staples.

Assistantships are nominated by academic departments, so early applicants who contact the graduate coordinator in October for Fall admission have the strongest odds.

Southeast Missouri State University Rankings 2027
Southeast Missouri State University is not ranked in the global research-university rankings from QS, THE or ARWU because it is classified as a regional teaching-focused public. SEMO also earned US News Top 40 Best Value Schools, Top 35 Best Colleges for Veterans and Top 100 for Social Mobility recognitions in the 2026 Best Colleges cycle.
Key insight: The absence of a global rank does not affect F-1 visa eligibility or employer recognition inside the US. What matters for Indian graduates is the STEM designation on the MS programmes, which extends OPT to 36 months and opens H-1B pathways.

Southeast Missouri State University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Southeast Missouri State University reports strong short-term outcomes across its bachelor’s and master’s cohorts.
- Placement rate: 98% of graduates are employed or continuing education within six months of graduation, as per the SEMO Career Services report.
- Average starting salary: $40,700 (₹38.8 lakh), university-reported across all bachelor’s graduates; graduates in Business, Computer Science and Cybersecurity report higher averages.
- Post-study work authorisation: STEM-designated MS programmes qualify for 12 months of standard OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension, giving Indian graduates up to 36 months to convert to H-1B.
- Career support: SEMO’s Career Services runs Handshake job postings, mock interviews, an annual Career Expo and a dedicated international student career advisor.
- Sector recruiters: Regional employers include Procter & Gamble, Boeing (St. Louis), Enterprise, Ameren and SEMO Health Network; representative sectors are IT services, healthcare, manufacturing and banking.
Insider note: Indian MS graduates from SEMO typically start in St. Louis and Kansas City metro tech roles rather than in Cape Girardeau itself. Applying for OPT within the 60-day post-completion window is critical because delays can void the STEM extension eligibility.
Southeast Missouri State University vs Peer Universities
The peer set below covers other Missouri public universities that admit Indian students at similar academic thresholds, giving a like-for-like view of rank, cost and positioning.

[Source: US News Best Colleges 2026]
SEMO’s strongest peer-set advantage is the combination of AACSB business accreditation and STEM-designated MS programmes at a Cape Girardeau cost base. This keeps the total two-year investment for Indian PG students under ₹50 lakh including living costs, which is 30% to 40% lower than the Missouri flagship.
Southeast Missouri State University fits Indian students who want an accredited US master’s or bachelor’s at a controlled total cost of $50,000 to $55,000 (₹48 lakh to ₹53 lakh) across two years, with a realistic salary payback of $40,700 (₹38.8 lakh) inside the first year of OPT. The STEM designation on MS Applied Computer Science and Cybersecurity is the single strongest India-specific advantage, extending the study in USA post-completion work window to 36 months.
SEMO is not the right choice for applicants prioritising a top-100 global research brand, extensive PhD pipelines or a coastal metro location. Students with those priorities should compare Missouri University of Science and Technology or Purdue as alternatives that trade higher tuition for stronger research signalling.
Southeast Missouri State University FAQs
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time at Southeast Missouri State University on F-1 visa?
Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders at SEMO can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during term and 40 hours per week during official breaks. Ques. What is the SEMO application fee for Indian applicants?
Ans. The international application fee at Southeast Missouri State University is $60 (₹5,723) and is non-refundable. Indian applicants should confirm requirements directly with the graduate coordinator of their intended department.
Ques. How long is post-study OPT for SEMO STEM masters?
Ans. SEMO STEM-designated master’s graduates qualify for 12 months of standard Optional Practical Training plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, totalling 36 months of legal work authorisation in the US. STEM-designated programmes include MS Applied Computer Science, MS Cybersecurity and MS Nursing. Applicants must apply for OPT within 90 days before the programme end date and secure employment in a directly related STEM field to qualify for the extension.

Acceptable documents include bank statements, fixed deposit certificates, sanctioned education loan letters and sponsor affidavits. IEP tuition runs at approximately $3,500 per session and can be bundled with the initial I-20.
Ques. How does SEMO verify Indian academic transcripts?
Ans. SEMO requires all Indian transcripts to be evaluated by an approved credential agency: World Education Services, Educational Credential Evaluators, International Education Evaluations or Educational Perspectives. The report must be course-by-course with GPA calculation on the US 4.0 scale. Indian applicants should send sealed transcripts directly from their university registrar to the credential agency, which then forwards the evaluation to SEMO. The full process takes six to ten weeks and costs $150 to $250.

- It has a low cost of living and education.
- Professional staff, great facilities, from a sports arena and facility to a great library and educational facilities.
Dislikes
- The city is small so it could be boring.
- The big cities that provide good job and internship opportunities are not near the city.
- There is no public transportation, so having a car is must.
Overview
I decided to pursue my studies in this college because this is a Public School / accredited course and university with affordable tuition and affordable cost of living. It was a great opportunity as an international student, as the tuition and cost of living were so low that I could afford them. However, this did not mean that education was low, as I could gain a Google fellowship right after graduation.
Campus Life
There are many active clubs and houses, and almost every week, you may find an incredible event.
Overview
I opted for SEMO because the cost was reasonable with also giving good extracurricular opportunities and it was a good distance from my home so I could visit or go home if I needed to. I do think you get what you pay for.
Fees
The cost is what brought me to this school, and it was fairly reasonable. I did end up losing one of my scholarships due to my advisor not properly informing me that I had to sign up for a specific amount of classes each semester which was not ideal.
