University of Utah Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants meet the University of Utah admission requirements with a recognised degree, English proficiency scores, and (for many PG programmes) standardised test scores.

  • PG academic: 4-year bachelor’s degree with 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended); 3-year Indian bachelor’s is accepted for many programmes with WES course-by-course evaluation.
  • PG English test: TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo English Test 110; IELTS Indicator is explicitly not accepted. Some departments require higher scores.
  • Standardised tests: GRE required by many MS/PhD departments (Kahlert Computing requires GRE with TOEFL/IELTS/DET by 15 December 2026); GMAT required for the Full-Time MBA.
  • UG academic: Class 12 with 75% to 85% (recommended) from CBSE, ICSE, or state boards, plus official transcripts for grades 9-12 sent to the Office of Admissions.
  • UG English test: TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5, DET 110, ACT English 18, or SAT EBRW 510.

Test dates must fall within two years of submitting the application, as per the University of Utah admissions page.

Key insight: The University of Utah does not publish IELTS component minimums, but Kahlert Computing and Eccles Business flag applicants scoring under 7.0 for additional writing assessment on arrival.

University of Utah Acceptance Rate 2027

The University of Utah acceptance rate is 89% (estimated), derived from third-party admissions data across recent freshman cycles. Graduate acceptance is department-driven and typically far more selective — Kahlert Computing and Eccles MBA cohorts admit under 30% of applicants.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
2025-2689% (estimated)Stable
2024-2589% (estimated)Stable

Overall undergraduate acceptance stays high because the University of Utah reviews applications holistically with no rigid GPA cutoff. Indian PG applicants face substantially tighter competition inside individual STEM and business departments.

Reality check: A high headline rate hides the fact that Kahlert Computing MS admits closer to 20-25% of Indian applicants and expects a strong CGPA (7.5+) plus quantitative GRE above 160.

University of Utah Campus, Facilities and Student Life

The main University of Utah campus spreads across 1,534 acres in Salt Lake City’s Foothill area, ringed by the Wasatch Range and connected to downtown by the TRAX Red Line light rail.

  • Location and transport: Campus sits 5 km east of downtown Salt Lake City with a free UTA transit pass for all students covering TRAX, buses, and FrontRunner.

IIT Bombay (India benchmark)#129NAINR 2 lakh to 3 lakhHigher rank, no US visa/STEM-OPT pathway

The University of Utah stands out on AAU membership, ARWU strength in Clinical Medicine (#36), and a Salt Lake City tech ecosystem that offers OPT-friendly hiring at Adobe, Qualtrics, and Silicon Slopes startups.

The University of Utah suits Indian applicants targeting an R1 US public research campus with a manageable total-investment envelope near INR 121 lakh over 2 years for a master’s degree, backed by 36 months of STEM-OPT work rights and a stable Salt Lake City tech-and-healthcare hiring corridor.

It is not the pick for applicants chasing a Top-100 QS badge or a Bay Area address — Arizona State University or University of Colorado Boulder deliver similar fees at higher QS positions with larger Indian cohorts.

University of Utah FAQs

Ques. Does the University of Utah accept 3-year Indian bachelor’s degrees for master’s admission?

Ans. Yes, most graduate programmes at the University of Utah accept 3-year Indian bachelor’s degrees when accompanied by a WES course-by-course credential evaluation. Kahlert Computing and Eccles Business review 3-year holders individually and may require additional pre-master’s coursework. Applicants should order WES evaluation at least 8 to 10 weeks before their target deadline to avoid processing delays with the Office of Admissions.

Ques. Can Indian MS students work part-time while studying at the University of Utah?

Ans. F-1 visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the academic year and 40 hours during summer. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorisation after the first academic year, typically for a paid internship tied to the degree. On-campus jobs at libraries, dining, and research labs pay USD 12 to 18 per hour and are the most common Indian-student route.

Ques. What is the University of Utah application fee for international graduate students?

Ans. The graduate application fee at the University of Utah is USD 65 for most international applicants, payable online through the ApplyWeb portal at submission. The fee is non-refundable and not typically waived for Indian applicants outside of NSF-funded programmes or specific fellowship pathways. Applicants applying to multiple University of Utah programmes must pay the fee for each application separately.

Ques. How much financial proof do Indian applicants need for the F-1 visa I-20?

Ans. The University of Utah requires proof of USD 63,279 (INR 60.68 lakh) for one year of a master’s programme and USD 66,105 (INR 63.39 lakh) for one year of undergraduate study, based on the 2026-27 I-20 cost sheet. Proof can combine bank statements, an education loan sanction letter, and a sponsor affidavit. All documents must be dated within 6 months of I-20 issuance.

Ques. Is the GRE required for MS admission at the University of Utah?

Ans. GRE is required by many graduate departments including Kahlert School of Computing for MS/PhD Computer Science with a 15 December 2026 deadline. Business master’s typically require GMAT or GRE, while some engineering and humanities programmes have made GRE optional. Indian applicants should verify the current test policy on the specific department page before applying, as waivers apply case-by-case.

Ques. Which Indian education loan lenders recognise the University of Utah?

Ans. SBI, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Avanse, Auxilo, Prodigy Finance, and MPOWER Financing all fund University of Utah admits for MS, PhD, and MBA programmes. Collateral loans up to INR 1.5 crore are standard from SBI and HDFC Credila; non-collateral loans up to INR 60 lakh are available from Prodigy Finance and MPOWER on the strength of the admit letter and future US earning potential.

Ques. Are University of Utah MS programmes STEM-designated for OPT extension?

Ans. Most Kahlert Computing, Price College of Engineering, and quantitative Eccles master’s are STEM-designated under the DHS CIP code list. STEM designation gives graduates 12 months of standard OPT plus a 24-month STEM-OPT extension for 36 months total US work authorisation. Indian graduates should confirm the CIP code with the department before enrolling, as MS Business Analytics carries STEM status while some MBA concentrations do not.

Ques. Does the University of Utah accept CBSE or ICSE Class 12 transcripts directly?

Ans. Yes, the University of Utah Office of Admissions accepts CBSE and ICSE Class 12 mark sheets directly for undergraduate admission, sent by the school or board to the international admissions office. Overview

The location was ideal given that the campus is within Salt Lake City, but remains separate from the city, which allows for a 'college campus feel' of living rather than city living. It is also close to the number of our outdoor sites.

Fees

Student Fees included that for the facilities provided, such as the library and student life center.

Overview

Public transit, Affordability, Reputability. My granddad and dad went here. I learned to love the campus as a 'second home' after I came to classes with my dad when he came back for his Master's degree.

Fees

Tuition is due the 2nd week of every semester, but payment plans are available. There are several additional fees every semester, including a student involvement fee. Too many others to remember/list.

There's free wifi on campus. There's an association of Indian students who organize events specifically for the Indian students and offer a lot of help to new students coming in. The university has a decent number of general events as well throughout the year for those who're interested.
