Northeastern Illinois University was established in 1867 in Blue Land, Illinois as a teacher training institution. Over the years, Northeastern has changed its academic structure from a teacher training institution and has acquired the status of a full-fledged university in 1971. 

Today, the university serves 10,000 + students. NEIU offers admission to students in more than 70 undergraduate and graduate programs in arts, sciences, education, and business fields to study in the USA. It is a public institution, instructing all its courses on-campus in the English language.

Campus

Northeastern Illinois University has 5 campuses providing different programs and services to the students. The main campus is located in a residential area on the Northwest side of Chicago. The other 4 locations are:

  1. Jacob H. Carruthers Center– a focal point for the African-American community, this campus provides programs for Inner City Studies and prepares the student to study the interests of the residents of Chicago along with participating in the rich Afro-American cultures. 
  2. El Centro– this campus provides a bachelor’s degree in majors like Computer Science, Justice Studies, Social Work, and Special Education. The campus is equipped with modern facilities like technology-enhanced classrooms, laboratories, student lounge and study spaces, etc.
  3. University Center of Lake County– located in Grayslake, Illinois, the campus is dedicated to transfer students and degree completion.
  4. Center of College Access and Success– it is one of the largest schools for improvement organization in Chicago. It develops partnerships involving the entire community to help students succeed academically and socially.

Residence

The university accommodates local, national and international students. The NEST opened in 2016 and is located on the west side of the main campus of NIEU. The amenities provided are:

Admission Process

NEIU offers admission to students from 100 different nationalities. The whole application procedure is different for international students. It is as follows:

How to Apply Online

Application fee – 30 USD (non-refundable)

Admission requirements–

  1. Completed application form along with application fee
  2. Official and evaluated transcripts from all schools/colleges attended
  3. SAT/ACT score (required if adequate credit hours are not met)
  4. 2 letters of recommendation and statement of goals and objectives (for master’s program only)
  5. Requirements for I-20 (F-1 Student visa) processing
  6. Statement and proof of availability of sufficient funds
  7. Official bank letter
  8. Indication of home country address 
  9. Proof of English Language Proficiency through IELTS/ TOEFL

Cost Of Attendance

Financial Aids

The university provides several scholarship opportunities to study in the USA for the students. However, international students are accustomed to Institutional and merit-based scholarships only. Some of the scholarships are as followed:

NEIU Provost Merit Freshman Scholarship –

  • Must have applied for early admission
  • Selection based on sliding scale using GPA

NEIU Deans Merit Freshman Scholarship –

  • Applied for early admission
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.00
  • Award up to 1000 USD
  • Determined upon admission

  • No repayment

Graduate Merit Tuition Scholarship –

  • Must be enrolled in a graduate program
  • Must have a GPA of 3.5
  • No repayment
  • Covers tuition only

NEIU Student Housing Scholarship –

  • Applicant must be a degree-seeking undergraduate
  • Freshman, transfer or continuing student
  • 2.50 GPA or higher
  • Must earn 30 credit hours in an academic year
  • Maintain good academic and disciplinary standing
  • Renewable awards and one-time awards are available
  • Award up to 1000 USD
  • No repayment obligation

NEIU Talent Tuition Scholarship –

  • Available to students in arts, communications, media, theatre, dance, English and music
  • Eligibility based on evaluation and presentation of portfolio, audition and academic progress and GPA
  • Applicant must be an undergraduate student
  • Must be reapplied annually
  • The award covers 4 years of tuition payment

International Students can also opt for educational loans in their home country to lessen the financial burden to study in the USA.

The Alumni Association, programs, events, and resources connect more than 83,000 graduates around the world to their alma mater. One can acquire a membership and avail lifetime alumni privileges, an invitation to exclusive alumni events. Exclusive access to library resources, the benefit for family members, career counseling, the opportunity to share one’s success story. One can also help the current students by making a donation to the university’s fund or by providing an internship scholarship.
