California State University, Fresno Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants for graduate programmes need a 4-year Indian bachelor’s degree, a competitive CGPA, and one of the accepted English proficiency scores.

  • Graduate academic: 4-year bachelor’s degree from a UGC-recognised university with CGPA 5.5/10 or 55% (recommended); MBA candidates typically need CGPA 6.0/10 or higher.
  • English proficiency (graduate): TOEFL iBT 4.0 (1-6 scale) / 80 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 6.5, PTE 53, Duolingo 105 (110 for select programmes), or iTEP 4.5. Both TOEFL scales are published because scores issued between 2026 and 2028 carry both.
  • Credential verification: Original or certified in-progress transcripts with English translations; WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation is accepted.
  • Standardised tests: GRE or GMAT required by MBA and selected engineering programmes; the university does not blanket-require them.

For undergraduate applicants, Class 12 marks from CBSE, ISC or a recognised state board are required, along with TOEFL iBT 61 (0-120 legacy) / 3.5 (1-6 scale), IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each band, or Duolingo 100.

Note: Indian applicants whose entire bachelor’s degree was taught in English can request an English proficiency waiver by submitting a signed medium-of-instruction letter from the university registrar. The waiver is applied case by case and is not automatic.

California State University, Fresno Acceptance Rate 2027

Fresno State reports an overall acceptance rate of 94% (estimated), positioning it as one of the more accessible public universities in California for Indian applicants who meet the minimum academic and English proficiency thresholds. This figure is drawn from federal admissions disclosures and third-party aggregations rather than a live official number.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
202694% (estimated)Stable, aligned with CSU system-wide access mission
202593% (estimated)Marginal increase year over year

Graduate admission at Fresno State is programme-specific, and departments like MBA, Physical Therapy and Nursing operate far below the overall university figure with holistic reviews.

Reality check: A 94% overall rate does not mean automatic admission for Indian applicants. Graduate programmes filter separately, and MBA, MS Computer Science and MSN Nursing each carry departmental cutoffs well tighter than the university-level number suggests.

California State University, Fresno Campus, Facilities and Student Life

The 388-acre main campus sits in Fresno, California, roughly 3 hours by road from Los Angeles and 3.5 hours from San Francisco, with a small municipal airport 15 minutes from campus.

  • Location and transport: The campus is served by Fresno Area Express bus lines with free student rides using a validated ID; Yosemite National Park sits 90 minutes east.
  • Housing: On-campus residence halls and University Courtyard apartments house roughly 1,100 students, with additional off-campus student housing at Palazzo, University Village and The Row.
  • Notable facilities: Henry Madden Library is the largest in the CSU system with over 1.4 million volumes and a 24-hour study zone during exams.
  • Indian community: The Indian Students Association and the Sikh Student Association host Diwali, Holi and Baisakhi celebrations; multiple Indian grocery stores and restaurants sit within 10 minutes of campus.

What Indian students say: Rent is cheap compared to LA or the Bay Area, campus is safe, and professors in the engineering and business departments are approachable. On-campus placement events lean regional, so Indian students often supplement with self-driven applications to Bay Area employers for post-graduation roles.

The Social Mobility rank of #21 is Fresno State’s strongest signal, reflecting sustained access outcomes for first-generation, low-income and Pell-eligible students.

Key insight: Fresno State is a Group I US institution for STEM OPT purposes despite its absence from QS World, so an F-1 graduate in an eligible STEM major secures the same 36-month post-study OPT window as peers from top-100 universities.

California State University, Fresno Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Career Development Services at Fresno State reports employment outcomes drawn from graduate-follow-up surveys and the Craig School of Business AACSB compliance reports. Salary outcomes are strongest for MBA, MS Computer Science and MS Engineering graduates.

  • Employment within 6 months (all graduates): 85% (estimated, based on CSU system-wide graduate outcomes)
  • Median starting salary (MS graduates): USD 65,000 to 75,000 (INR 62.19 to 71.76 lakh, market median)
  • Median post-MBA salary: USD 70,000 to 85,000 (INR 66.98 to 81.33 lakh, market median)
  • Top recruiter sectors: Technology (Bay Area consulting and product firms), agriculture and food processing, energy, healthcare, and public sector (California state and county agencies)
  • Career support: Handshake portal, on-campus career fairs each semester, and STEM OPT advising for up to 36 months post-graduation for eligible F-1 visa holders

Insider note: Fresno State’s on-campus recruitment leans heavily to Central California employers, so Indian graduates targeting Bay Area technology firms typically supplement Handshake with LinkedIn outreach and referrals from the Indian alumni base clustered around Silicon Valley.

California State University, Fresno vs Peer Universities

Fresno State compares most directly with other California State University campuses and mid-tier US public universities on cost, entry threshold and international outcomes.

[Source: US News Best Colleges 2026, university websites for tuition, Collegedunia Study Abroad]

Fresno State stands out for the lowest total cost of attendance among comparable California publics, and for a Social Mobility rank that few peer universities match. It is the value pick for Indian applicants who prioritise a US STEM degree with OPT eligibility over a Bay Area postcode.

Conclusion

Fresno State fits Indian applicants targeting a STEM master’s or MBA in California with a total two-year investment near INR 66.36 lakh against a median USD 70,000 (INR 66.98 lakh) starting salary. The AACSB-accredited MBA, STEM OPT eligibility on engineering majors and 36-month post-study work window make it a defensible value bet, backed by the F-1 visa pathway.

Applicants targeting brand-name QS top-200 status, Ivy League networks, or immediate Bay Area on-campus recruitment should look at San Jose State University, which sits in Silicon Valley with materially stronger recruiter access despite similar cost.

California State University, Fresno FAQs

Ques. Which English test does Fresno State accept for graduate admission?

Ans. Fresno State accepts TOEFL iBT at 80 on the legacy 0-120 scale or 4.0 on the new 1-6 scale, IELTS 6.5 overall, PTE Academic 53, Duolingo English Test 105 (110 for select programmes), and iTEP 4.5. Both TOEFL scales are published because scores issued between January 2026 and 2028 carry both scales. Programme minimums may be higher than these floors.

Ques. Does Fresno State require GRE or GMAT for Indian applicants?

Ans. The GRE or GMAT is not a blanket requirement. The MBA at Craig School of Business asks for GMAT or GRE, and selected engineering and quantitative programmes still require GRE. Most master’s programmes, including many MS Computer Science and MSN Nursing tracks, waive standardised tests if the applicant meets a minimum bachelor’s GPA. Verify per department before finalising the application.

Ques. Can F-1 students work part-time on campus at Fresno State?

Ans. Yes. F-1 visa holders may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during term and full-time during official university breaks. Roles include graduate teaching assistantships, research assistantships, library work and dining services. Off-campus work through Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training becomes available after the first academic year of full-time enrolment.

Ques. Is Fresno State a STEM-designated OPT university for Indian students?

Ans. Yes. F-1 graduates from Fresno State STEM programmes such as MS Computer Science, MS Electrical Engineering, MS Mechanical Engineering, MS Civil Engineering and MS Chemistry qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension on top of the standard 12-month OPT, giving a total of 36 months of US work authorisation. Non-STEM majors get 12 months of standard OPT only.

Ques. What is the Fresno State application fee for international students?

Ans. The application fee is USD 70 (INR 6,698) per campus, paid non-refundably through the Cal State Apply portal at submission. Fresno State does not offer application fee waivers to international applicants. Payment is accepted by credit card, bank draft, money order or personal cheque drawn on a US bank, and the fee applies whether the applicant is inside or outside the United States.

Ques. Are there education loans recognised by Fresno State for Indian students?

Ans. Indian applicants routinely fund Fresno State using education loans from HDFC Credila, State Bank of India, Avanse, InCred and Auxilo, along with international lenders such as Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing. Fresno State issues an I-20 based on documented funds covering the first year of tuition and living costs, so applicants should keep sanction letters ready before the F-1 visa interview at the US Consulate.

Ques. How does Fresno State verify Indian bachelor’s degree transcripts?

Ans. Fresno State accepts a course-by-course credential evaluation from World Education Services (WES) under the ICAP service, or an equivalent NACES-member evaluator. Applicants must send official transcripts directly from the Indian university registrar to WES, and WES then transmits the evaluated report to Fresno State. Sealed envelope originals are also acceptable if sent directly by the awarding institution.

Ques. Does Fresno State offer scholarships to newly admitted Indian students?

Ans. The Muhareb Family Grant automatically considers newly admitted international students in their first semester, awarding USD 1,000 to 1,500. The Dean’s Scholarship Tuition Waiver and the 300+ AcademicWorks scholarships are open only to students already enrolled and in good academic standing, so incoming Indian applicants should plan the first-year budget assuming no institutional aid.

Yes, You can submit a Duolingo score for English language proficiency. Minimum Requirement is 105. Also, you need to submit the GMAT score range of 530-650 for the MBA program at CSU.

Minimum overall score of 6.0 with a minimum writing score of 5.5 for baccalaureate programs. However, You can explore the California State University courses to learn more about the curriculum, fees, and other details.
