Lehman College Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Lehman College holds Indian applicants to a documented academic and English proficiency bar published by CUNY and the Lehman International Student and Scholar Office.
- PG Academic Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree with minimum 55% aggregate or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended); STEM programmes prefer 60% or CGPA 6.0/10.
- English Test Minimums: TOEFL iBT 61, IELTS 6.0, or Duolingo English Test 85; all scores verified against the Lehman graduate international page.
- Credential Verification: Course-by-course evaluation by WES or a NACES-approved agency; official transcripts required.
- Standardised Tests: Lehman is test-optional through Spring 2027; GRE is not required for most PG programmes.
UG Requirements:
- Class 12 Academics: 70% to 85% (recommended) with the required stream for the intended major.
- English Proficiency: Same minimums as PG; medium-of-instruction waivers considered on a case basis.
- Financial Documentation: Bank statement covering one year of tuition plus living costs, required for I-20 issuance.
Key insight: Applicants with an English-medium Indian degree may request an IELTS/TOEFL waiver by submitting an official medium-of-instruction letter from the previous institution, but Nursing and Speech-Language Pathology programmes rarely grant it.
Lehman College Acceptance Rate 2027
Lehman College reports an acceptance rate of 57% in the latest US News Best Colleges profile, placing it in the moderately selective band for CUNY senior colleges. The figure is drawn from Common Data Set reporting and is considered reliable.
Selectivity has held steady in the 55% to 60% band across recent cycles, with Nursing, Speech-Language Pathology and Social Work applying tighter departmental cut-offs. Well-prepared Indian applicants with a strong Class 12 or bachelor’s score typically clear the general threshold.
Reality check: The 57% headline rate applies to the general applicant pool; competitive graduate tracks such as MS Nursing and MSW admit closer to 30% to 40%, so target programme-specific eligibility rather than the college-wide figure.

Lehman College Campus, Facilities and Student Life

- Location and Transit: Bedford Park Boulevard subway station on the 4 line is on campus; monthly MTA pass covers all NYC boroughs.
- Housing: Lehman is a commuter campus with no on-site residence halls; most Indian students rent shared apartments in Kingsbridge, Fordham or Riverdale.

Lehman College Rankings 2027
Lehman College’s strongest position is #33 in US News Regional Universities North 2026, and the college is not currently placed in the QS or THE global rankings, which favour research-intensive doctoral universities. The Regional Universities category tracks master’s-focused institutions serving their surrounding region rather than global research output.
As part of the CUNY system, Lehman is one of eleven senior colleges; CUNY’s flagship research institutions (Graduate Center, Baruch, City College) carry the system-level global rankings, while Lehman leads on regional undergraduate outcomes.
| Member Institution | QS World 2027 | US News (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Lehman College | Not ranked | #33 Regional Universities North |
| Baruch College (CUNY) | Not ranked | #4 Regional Universities North |
| City College of New York (CUNY) | #701 to 710 | National Universities tier |
[Source: QS, US News]
Key insight: US Regional rankings still qualify Lehman graduates for standard F-1 to H-1B pathways and STEM OPT extensions, so the absence of a QS World rank does not affect visa or employer recognition in the US labour market.

Lehman College Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Lehman College reports strong post-graduation outcomes for its Nursing, Education and Business tracks, though the College does not publish a single unified placement report.
- Median Starting Salary (US market median for Lehman majors): USD 55,000 to USD 68,000 (INR 52.5 to 65.0 lakh)
- Top Sectors for Indian Graduates: Healthcare, Education, Public Health, Financial Services, Technology
- Representative Employers (sector-labelled): NYC Health + Hospitals, NYC Department of Education, Montefiore Medical Center, JPMorgan Chase and CUNY institutions
- Post-Study Work Visa: 12 months of Optional Practical Training for all majors; 24 additional months of STEM OPT extension for CS, Business Analytics and eligible science programmes
- Career Support: Career Exploration and Development Center offers resume clinics, employer meet-ups and NYC-focused job fairs
Insider note: Indian graduates in Nursing and Speech-Language Pathology often lock in New York state licensure and hospital roles before OPT ends, giving a faster H-1B or state-sponsorship route than pure Business tracks.
Lehman College vs Peer Universities
The peer set below compares Lehman with regional CUNY sister colleges and other affordable US public options popular with Indian applicants.
| University | US News Rank 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD) | Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lehman College | #33 Regional North | 15,390 to 20,520 | 14.7 to 19.6 lakh | Lowest-cost CUNY entry for Nursing and MSW |
| Brooklyn College (CUNY) | #22 Regional North | 15,390 to 20,520 | 14.7 to 19.6 lakh | Stronger arts and business faculty |
| Queens College (CUNY) | #20 Regional North | 15,390 to 20,520 | 14.7 to 19.6 lakh | Larger Asian and Indian student base |
| CUNY Baruch College | #4 Regional North | 17,865 to 23,040 | 17.1 to 22.0 lakh | Zicklin Business School and Wall Street proximity |
| Stony Brook University | #58 National | 23,100 to 28,700 | 22.1 to 27.4 lakh | Research doctoral profile and STEM depth |
Lehman stands out on affordability per credit and Bronx healthcare hiring access, and it clears the CUNY quality benchmark while sitting below the tuition of comparable New York research universities.
Indian applicants trading off ranking prestige for lower tuition and NYC job-market entry consistently name Lehman alongside Brooklyn and Queens as their CUNY shortlist.
For Indian students who want a New York City degree at a public tuition ceiling of roughly INR 20 lakh a year, with median starting salaries of INR 52 lakh, Lehman College delivers a workable ROI within an 18-month payback window; the USA study guide outlines the F-1 visa and STEM OPT pathway that anchors this return.
The College is not the right choice for applicants chasing QS Top-200 branding, on-campus residence life, or a research-intensive doctoral pipeline; students with that profile should look at Stony Brook or CUNY Graduate Center for comparable cost with a research fit.

Ques. Can Indian students waive the IELTS at Lehman?
Ans. Lehman may waive IELTS or TOEFL for applicants whose entire prior education was in English at a recognised institution. Ans. Lehman College is test-optional through Spring 2027 for most graduate programmes, so GRE and GMAT are not required for MBA, MS Computer Science, MS Business Analytics or MPH admissions. The College accepts wire transfers through Flywire and Convera for tuition, and lenders typically release funds in semester tranches after visa issuance.
