Top 5 Undergraduate Programs at Virginia Commonwealth University
Undergraduate international students pay a flat out-of-state tuition of USD 36,521 per year for 15 credits per semester across all schools. The 4-year total works out to USD 146,084 (INR 139.8 lakh) before fees and living costs.
| Program | Duration | Annual Fee (USD) | Annual Fee (INR lakh) | Entry Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B.S. Computer Science | 4 years | USD 36,521 | 35.0 lakh | Class 12 with 75% to 85% (recommended) |
| B.S. in Nursing | 4 years | USD 36,521 | 35.0 lakh | Class 12 with 80% in Physics, Chemistry, Biology (recommended) |
| Bachelor of Business Administration | 4 years | USD 36,521 | 35.0 lakh | Class 12 with 75% to 85% (recommended) |
| B.S. Biology | 4 years | USD 36,521 | 35.0 lakh | Class 12 with 75% in Biology and Chemistry (recommended) |
| Bachelor of Fine Arts (VCUarts) | 4 years | USD 36,521 | 35.0 lakh | Class 12 with 70%+ and portfolio (recommended) |
Insider note: Indian applicants concentrate in MS Computer Science, MS Information Systems and Master of Health Administration. GEIP-eligible engineering and computing tracks give the strongest tuition-to-STEM-OPT ratio, since a 3-semester master’s followed by 36 months of work authorisation is a rare combination at a US public R1 university.

Virginia Commonwealth University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
The core Virginia Commonwealth University admission requirements for Indian applicants are a recognised bachelor’s degree, English proficiency and credential evaluation; the specifics are set out below.
- Postgraduate academic requirement: 4-year bachelor’s degree with minimum 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended equivalency of the 3.0/4.0 GPA norm); STEM and MHA departments may set 65%+
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 80 (0-120 legacy scale) or 4.5 (1-6 scale, for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026), IELTS 6.5, PTE 65, or Duolingo English Test 110
- Credential verification: WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation is required for all Indian transcripts, ordered before submitting the application
- Standardised tests: GRE waived at most STEM master’s, MHA and MPH; GMAT/GRE optional for the MBA
Undergraduate applicants must submit Class 12 marksheets with 75%+ across five subjects (recommended), the same English proficiency scores as above, and Grade 10 and 11 records via the international undergraduate application.
Key insight: Indian applicants from English-medium bachelor’s programmes may be waived from TOEFL/IELTS if the medium of instruction letter is issued on the college letterhead by the Head of Institution. Test scores remain valid for two years from the test date; older scores are automatically rejected by the VCU Graduate School.
Virginia Commonwealth University Acceptance Rate 2027
The Virginia Commonwealth University acceptance rate sits in the 91% to 93% band (estimated) based on third-party admissions filings; VCU does not publish a single institutional acceptance rate. Reliability is medium — the band is stable across the last four admission cycles but individual graduate departments such as MHA and MS Computer Science admit far more selectively than the campus-wide figure.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 92% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2025 | 92% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2024 | 91% (estimated) | Slight uptick vs 2023 |
The headline figure is materially undergraduate-weighted. Graduate acceptance at Virginia Commonwealth University is department-set and often 40% to 60% for STEM master’s, with MHA and DPT programmes selecting under 25%.
Reality check: A high campus-wide acceptance rate does not mean easy PG admission for Indian applicants. STEM master’s programmes use the same GRE-optional, transcript-first review as more selective peers, and the MHA cohort recruits fewer than 60 seats a year.

Virginia Commonwealth University Campus, Facilities and Student Life
Virginia Commonwealth University runs two Richmond campuses: the Monroe Park Campus for arts, business, engineering and sciences, and the MCV (Medical College of Virginia) Campus for health sciences and the VCU Medical Center, a Level I trauma centre.
- Location and transit: Both campuses sit inside Richmond city limits, linked by a free VCU shuttle and the GRTC Pulse bus rapid transit
- Housing: On-campus rooms cost USD 8,900 to 12,500 per academic year; VCU does not guarantee housing for graduate international students
- Notable facilities: James Branch Cabell Library (open 24 hours in term), Cary Street Gym, the ICA contemporary art institute, and a 1,050-bed teaching hospital
- Indian student community: The VCU Indian Students Association and Bollywood-dance and cricket clubs run through the year; Indian grocery is a 10-minute drive to West Broad Street
What Indian students say: Richmond is quieter than Washington DC or New York and rent stretches further; the medical-heavy student body creates strong health-informatics and bioinformatics research pull for Indian STEM master’s students.
Virginia Commonwealth University Scholarships 2027

[Source: VCU Scholarships and Funding; USIEF India Fulbright program]
Planning note: Graduate assistantships are the largest lever for Indian students at Virginia Commonwealth University because they combine tuition remission with a taxable stipend. Applicants should email prospective faculty by November 2026 for Fall 2027 GA/TA/RA slots since most are allocated informally before departmental fellowship deadlines.

QS has moved the university from the 851-900 band in 2025 to the 951-1000 band in 2027, largely on internationalisation-metric shifts rather than research output.
| Ranking Body | Latest Edition | Previous Edition | Two Editions Back |

Subject rankings are the sharpest lens on Virginia Commonwealth University: QS Nursing 2026 places the university at #101-150 globally, QS Medicine at #201-250 and QS Pharmacy and Pharmacology at #151-200. ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2026 places Dentistry and Oral Sciences at #50 globally. Collegedunia Study Abroad ranks the university #108 of 357 in the USA and #156 for Medicine globally.

Key insight: For Indian applicants, ARWU #301-400 and US News #411 clear the H-1B specialty-occupation employer bar and satisfy most Indian public-sector scholarship recognition lists. Subject rank matters more than aggregate rank; a QS Nursing #101-150 or ARWU Dentistry #50 carries far more weight with recruiters than the QS overall band.

Virginia Commonwealth University vs Peer Universities
The peer set below groups Virginia Commonwealth University with US public R1 universities that Indian STEM and health master’s applicants shortlist at a similar sticker-price and rank tier.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Virginia Commonwealth University | #951-1000 | #252 of 824 | USD 14,000 to 15,000 (GEIP, per year equivalent); INR 13.4 to 14.4 lakh | Flat-rate GEIP master’s + top-50 ARWU Dentistry |
| George Mason University | Not published in QS 2027 top 1000 | Confirm on Collegedunia listing | USD 32,000 to 38,000 (market range); INR 30.6 to 36.4 lakh | Northern Virginia location, strong cyber and policy |
| Old Dominion University | Not published in QS 2027 top 1000 | Confirm on Collegedunia listing | USD 25,000 to 30,000 (market range); INR 23.9 to 28.7 lakh | Coastal engineering and modelling and simulation strength |
| University of Cincinnati | #661-670 (verify) | Confirm on Collegedunia listing | USD 28,000 to 32,000 (market range); INR 26.8 to 30.6 lakh | Co-op programme model in engineering |
Virginia Commonwealth University stands out on two data points: the GEIP flat tuition is materially cheaper than any peer’s per-year rate, and the ARWU Dentistry and QS Nursing subject positions are the strongest in this peer set. For applicants prioritising healthcare, arts or affordability over campus-town prestige, VCU is the tier’s best-value pick.
Virginia Commonwealth University is right for Indian STEM and health master’s applicants who want a US-public R1 label with a total tuition under INR 30 lakh, a subject-strong health sciences ecosystem and 36 months of STEM OPT. With GEIP tuition of INR 26.8 to 28.0 lakh against an estimated master’s median of INR 65.1 lakh, the payback is fast and the MS in USA pathway stays viable even at conservative post-tax outcomes.
Virginia Commonwealth University is not the right pick for applicants chasing a top-100 QS overall rank, a highly selective admissions signal on the resume or a Big Tech FAANG feeder programme. Those profiles are better served by a Purdue University or a University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign master’s on the STEM route, or a Georgetown MBA on the business track.
Virginia Commonwealth University FAQs
Ques. Does Virginia Commonwealth University offer STEM-designated master’s programs for Indian students?
Ans. Yes. Virginia Commonwealth University’s MS Computer Science, MS Information Systems, MS Bioinformatics, MS Data Science, MS Business Analytics, and most engineering master’s are STEM-designated under the DHS CIP code list. This qualifies Indian F-1 graduates for the 24-month STEM OPT extension on top of the standard 12-month OPT, giving up to 36 months of US work authorisation before applying for an H-1B visa.
Ques. Can Indian students apply to VCU without GRE or GMAT scores?
Ans. Yes for most graduate programmes. VCU waives GRE for the Master of Health Administration, Master of Public Health, and several MS Engineering tracks; GMAT and GRE are optional for the MBA. Applicants should still submit strong transcripts, a statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation. A handful of research-heavy PhD tracks continue to require the GRE, so check the department page before skipping the test.
Ques. What is the application fee for international applicants at Virginia Commonwealth University?
Ans. The VCU international application fee is USD 75 (INR 7,180) as a state-required non-refundable charge, paid at the time of submission through the Graduate School portal. VCU does not routinely waive the fee for international applicants, though some department-run graduate fairs and India recruitment events offer time-limited fee waiver codes. The fee is separate from the WES or ECE credential evaluation cost.
Ques. How does WES credential evaluation work for VCU applications?
Ans. Indian applicants order a WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation before applying, upload the digital report to the VCU Graduate School portal, and have WES send an official copy directly to VCU. Turnaround is 4 to 8 weeks after WES receives the sealed transcripts and marksheets from the Indian institution. Start the process 3 months before the target deadline to avoid missing the international cutoff.
Ques. Are graduate assistantships available for Indian master’s students at VCU?
Ans. Yes. Virginia Commonwealth University offers teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and graduate service assistantships that combine tuition remission with a stipend of USD 4,000 to 9,000 per year (INR 3.8 to 8.6 lakh). Allocation is department-run and informal — Indian applicants should email prospective advisors and department chairs by November for Fall intake to be considered for named GA/TA/RA slots.
Ques. Which Indian education loan providers recognise Virginia Commonwealth University?
Ans. Virginia Commonwealth University appears on the approved-institutions list of HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, InCred, ICICI Bank, SBI Global Ed-Vantage, and Bank of Baroda. Non-collateral loans up to INR 40 lakh are common for GEIP master’s tuition plus living costs, while secured loans can extend to INR 75 lakh for MBA or MHA. Interest rates start near 10.5% floating for private lenders and 9.15% for SBI.
Ques. Can dependents accompany F-1 students to Virginia Commonwealth University on F-2 visas?
Ans. Yes. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 of an F-1 student can accompany or join later on F-2 dependent visas. VCU issues a separate I-20 for each dependent once the F-1 student submits proof of additional funds — roughly USD 6,000 for a spouse and USD 4,000 per child per year. F-2 spouses cannot work in the US but can enrol in part-time study.
Ques. What English-medium bachelor’s waiver documents does Virginia Commonwealth University accept?
Ans. Indian applicants may request a TOEFL or IELTS waiver by submitting a medium of instruction letter on official college letterhead, signed by the Registrar or Head of Institution, confirming that English was the sole medium for the entire bachelor’s degree. VCU also considers three or more years of full-time study at a recognised English-medium university abroad. Waiver decisions are made per programme, and STEM departments retain the right to require test scores.

- The course structure is very detailed and requires understanding of core principles and real-life application. This is what I find is lacking in Indian system of education where more emphasis is given to memorization.
- The classrooms are well equipped with audio-visual system, live recording and noise cancellation features along with a tiered seating arrangement. This setup ensures that everyone has an unobstructed view of the front.
- The labs are equipped with the latest tools to perform research. There is no pressure of getting positive results, rather, emphasis is given on learning how to do research and think out of the box. The resources are available in plenty, and it is absolutely fine if you have to waste resources just for the sake of learning in the initial phase.
Dislikes
- The exams are very frequent, almost every month.
- Vegetarian options are fewer in the college canteen.
- They do not have free bicycles for students to move around in the campus. The price is not affordable for international students.
Campus Life
- We have two campus- MCV Campus and Monroe Park Campus.
- The Monroe Park campus is a bigger campus and has a bigger gym and library.
- There are weeks of welcome from August 20 to September 10 which have a lot of fun events and fairs for students to know other students and collect some free gifts and food.
- There is also a departmental get together every month. There are activities like hiking, apple picking organized by VCU.
- There are a lot of basketball and volleyball matches happening every month against other universities
Fees
- The fee for every semester is around 17,000 USD. The fee is charged in Fall semester, spring semester and summer.
- My monthly expenses are as follows: 450 USD rent, 60 USD groceries, only 50 USD for transportation (since we have free transportation in Richmond), 50 USD for personal care and around 70 USD for outing.
- I do not live in a hostel, but I live very close to the university, in an apartment, which saves my time and money, and I cook food at home, so I do not have to invest in the canteen every day.

Likes
- Because it was offering a master's course in my field of interest. Also, the state of Virginia is highly regarded as having some of the best universities in America, only second to the state of Massachusetts.
- The community of students on campus was amazing; class dynamics during lectures and in-class activities were good; sports facilities on the campus are state-of-the art and some of the best American universities. Active engagement in the course through a rigorous assignment policy helps a pupil manage time and his/her work schedule effectively.
Dislikes
- Probably the lack of recruiters on campus after the program is over. It is in downtown Richmond, so some shady people lurk in and around the campus occasionally through the night, although on-campus security is highly effective and diligent.
Overview
Overall, it was a nice experience. VCU gave me a lot of opportunities to flourish in various domains, both on and off campus. The community of students is lively, and the faculty are masters in their fields.
Campus Life
Campus life is diverse, and you would have an array of opportunities to involve yourself in various activities and hubs almost every day. The infrastructure is commendable both on and off campus. There wouldn't be anything that would be hard to find, as everything is within walking distance or on the bus route. State-of-the-art gyms, various sports facilities, theatres, open grounds, parks, and on-campus services are available.
