San Diego State University admissions run on Cal State Apply, the California State University central portal, with international applicants filing directly for the university’s Fall intake. Both undergraduate and graduate entry sit at a 3.0 GPA floor, roughly 80 percent in Class XII or Bachelor’s marks, with English proficiency evidenced through IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or the Duolingo English Test.

  • Fall 2027 primary intake: undergraduate early consideration deadline is 30 November 2026.
  • Base nonresident tuition: USD 471 per unit (INR 44,915), application fee: USD 70 (INR 6,675).
  • Eligibility floor: Class XII or Bachelor’s at 80 percent, IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 80 minimum.
  • Acceptance rate: around 34 to 37 percent based on recently published cycles.

Indian applicants most often target MS Computer Science, MS Business Analytics, and the Fowler MBA at SDSU. The wider San Diego State University campus draws steady positive reviews from Indian graduates for its academic support and California job pipelines.

Admission status: Open. Cal State Apply for Fall 2027 opened on 1 August 2026 for account setup, with graduate program submissions accepted from 1 October 2026. The SDSU undergraduate early consideration deadline is 30 November 2026, and the application fee is USD 70 (around INR 6,675). Fall is the primary intake, since SDSU does not offer Spring first-year admission.

San Diego State University Application Deadlines

All San Diego State University applications route through Cal State Apply, with graduate programs also collecting supporting documents through the my.SDSU portal after submission. Fall 2027 is the primary intake because SDSU does not run a Spring first-year cycle and only a small number of graduate departments open for Spring 2027, per the SDSU international graduate steps-to-apply page.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use USD 1 = INR 95.36, the live rate on 11 August 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

Note: SDSU treats graduate deadlines as program-specific rather than as fixed rounds. The 15 March date is the most common Fall cutoff for master’s programs, but individual departments in the Fowler business school and engineering may close earlier. Always cross-check on your target program’s page before you file.

San Diego State University Eligibility for Indian Students

SDSU sets a single institutional floor across levels and layers program-specific requirements on top. Academic minimums, English test scores, and country-level exemptions all sit on the SDSU international graduate requirements page for postgraduates, and on the corresponding first-year page for undergraduates.

SDSU Academic Minimums for Indian Applicants

  • Undergraduate entry: Class XII from a recognised board with about 80 percent overall (a 3.0 GPA equivalent).
  • Graduate entry: Bachelor’s degree with 80 percent aggregate in the final two years (a 3.0 GPA equivalent).
  • Three-year Bachelor’s: accepted for graduate admission only if the degree is completed; in-progress three-year degrees are not eligible.
  • Credential evaluation: Indian graduate transcripts must be verified through WES or IERF.

SDSU English Proficiency Scores

Test Minimum score Notes
IELTS Academic 6.5 overall Institutional floor; some programs need higher.
TOEFL iBT 80 (pre-Jan 2026 scoring) New scale requires 4 or higher for post-Jan 2026 tests.
PTE Academic 58 Accepted for both UG and PG.
Duolingo English Test 105 Score valid for two years.

SDSU English Waiver Options for Indian Students

India is not on SDSU’s automatic country exemption list, which covers 19 English-speaking territories only. However, undergraduate applicants can substitute a SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 550 or an ACT English score of 22 for the language test. Indian graduates whose entire Bachelor’s was taught in English can request a program-level medium-of-instruction review, but this is granted at the department’s discretion and is not a blanket exemption.

SDSU accepts international first-year applicants only for the Fall intake. Applicants must nominate a specific major on the Cal State Apply form — "undeclared" is not permitted for international freshmen — and admission is competitive within impacted majors like Nursing, Business Administration, and Engineering. Base nonresident tuition sits at USD 471 per unit for undergraduate enrolment.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
BS Computer Science 4 years Class XII with Mathematics, 80 percent overall IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80

San Diego State University MBA Admissions

The Fowler College of Business runs the Full-Time MBA, Flex (Part-Time) MBA, and the specialised Sports MBA, plus dual JD-MBA and MBA-Latin American Studies tracks. Fall 2027 is the only cycle open for MBA applicants; the Fowler graduate admissions team confirms no Spring 2027 admission on the Fowler graduate admissions page.

Fowler MBA Application Rounds

Round Deadline (Fall 2027) Best for
Round 1 15 November 2026 Applicants seeking scholarship priority
Round 2 15 January 2027 Standard international applicants
Round 3 15 March 2027 Late graduate-cycle applicants
Round 4 15 May 2027 Domestic priority; international review discretionary

Test and Experience Requirements

  • GMAT and GRE: not required for admission to any Fowler graduate programme. Applicants may submit unofficial scores if the numbers strengthen the file.
  • Work experience: not mandatory for the Full-Time MBA, but Fowler flags that two years or more of professional experience makes an application significantly more competitive.
  • Interviews: SDSU does not conduct admission interviews for the standard MBA.
  • Sports MBA: two years of relevant work in sport or entertainment is expected, plus a strong personal statement tied to industry goals.

San Diego State University PhD Admissions

SDSU offers doctoral study primarily through joint programmes with UC San Diego and other UC campuses, plus a small set of professional doctorates (Ed.D., DNP, DPT, DrPH) awarded solely by SDSU. Application timelines cluster far earlier than master’s deadlines because departments align admits with UC advisor availability.

PhD Funding Snapshot for Indian Applicants

Most joint PhDs offer multi-year funding packages that combine teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and tuition waivers, though amounts vary by department and cohort. Confirm the current stipend on your specific programme’s page and see the funding options for Indian students on Collegedunia for a wider comparison.

Note: Joint SDSU-UC PhDs are highly competitive; Indian applicants typically need first-author research output, strong quantitative training, and pre-application contact with a named faculty advisor before filing on Cal State Apply.

San Diego State University Application Process

Cal State Apply is the single filing portal for both undergraduate and graduate applications. The workflow runs from Cal State Apply into my.SDSU portal for document upload, and finally to the International Student Center once you accept an offer.

  1. Open a Cal State Apply account. The Fall 2027 cycle opened on Cal State Apply on 1 August 2026 for account setup, with formal submissions accepted from 1 October 2026.
  2. Pay the application fee. Pay the application fee of USD 70 (around INR 6,675) on Cal State Apply — the same fee applies to undergraduate and graduate applications.
  3. Complete the programme-specific supplemental form. Master’s applicants submit a resume, statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation directly to the department, not through Cal State Apply.
  4. Upload transcripts to my.SDSU. After submission, you're mine.SDSU account activates for uploading Class XII marksheets, Bachelor’s transcripts, and English test score reports.
  5. Provide a WES or IERF credential evaluation for Indian degrees when the programme requires it.
  6. Wait for the offer decision - SDSU typically notifies first-year applicants by early spring and reviews graduate files on a rolling basis until the department cutoff.
  7. Accept the offer and submit financial documents to trigger I-20 issuance for the F-1 visa process (see visa section below).

SDSU Admission Decision Timeline

First-year international applicants who file by the 30 November 2026 early consideration deadline receive decisions from early spring 2027 onward. Graduate decisions arrive on a programme-by-programme rolling basis. SDSU issues conditional and unconditional offers; conditional offers usually cite pending final transcripts or a missing English score. There is no formal deferral policy — declined offers require a fresh application in a later cycle.

San Diego State University Documents Required

Documents split into the Cal State Apply stage (uploaded when filing) and the post-offer stage (uploaded to my.SDSU for enrolment and I-20 issuance). Certified copies and English translations are needed wherever the original document is not in English.

Pre-Application Documents

  • Valid passport (bio-data page)
  • Class XII marksheet and passing certificate (for UG applicants)
  • Official Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate (for PG applicants)
  • English proficiency score report (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or DET)
  • Statement of purpose or personal statement
  • Two to three letters of recommendation
  • Updated resume or CV
  • WES or IERF credential evaluation, where the programme requires it
  • Programme-specific supplemental forms uploaded directly to the department

Post-Offer Documents for the F-1 Visa File

  • Signed SDSU Financial Statement form
  • Bank statement or affidavit dated within the past six months showing at least one full academic year of funds
  • Sponsor affidavit if funds are held in a parent's or relative’s name
  • Final official transcripts sent through WES or the awarding institution
  • Passport-size photographs meeting US visa specifications

San Diego State University Acceptance Rate

SDSU publishes a competitive but reachable overall admit rate. The most recent Common Data Set figures place the university’s acceptance rate around 34 to 37 percent, with impacted majors like Nursing and Engineering admitting a far smaller share of applicants than open majors like Arts and Humanities.

Where Indian Applicants Land

Indian applicants tend to cluster in Fowler graduate programmes, engineering master’s, and MS Computer Science. Fowler and engineering typically maintain higher-than-average acceptance for well-prepared master’s applicants because international graduate cohorts are core to their revenue model. Undergraduate impacted majors are much less forgiving — international first-year applicants to Business Administration or Nursing routinely need Class XII marks above 90 percent to sit above the internal cutoff.

Reading SDSU’s Numbers Fairly

An institutional acceptance rate blends every applicant type into one figure. What matters for Indian applicants is the programme-level cutoff, not the aggregate. Check SDSU’s current ranking band and programme-level admit data before assuming the headline percentage applies to your case.

USA Student Visa Process for San Diego State University

Indian admits attend SDSU on an F-1 student visa. The visa file is separate from the SDSU admission file — SDSU issues the I-20 after you accept your offer and clear the financial documentation review, and then you schedule your visa interview at a US consulate in India.

The core sequence: accept the SDSU offer through my.SDSU, upload financial documents dated within the past six months proving one full academic year of funds, and wait up to seven business days for I-20 issuance from the International Student Center. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,376), complete the DS-160 form, pay the visa application fee, and book your consular interview. Bring the I-20, offer letter, financial documents, SEVIS receipt, and academic records to the interview. Arrival is usually allowed up to 30 days before the programme start date.

2026 update: SDSU’s International Student Center will not issue an I-20 until the Financial Statement form is complete and the underlying bank documents are dated within the past six months. Older statements are rejected even if the balance is sufficient.

Scholarship

  • Me and friends, no one got a scholarship at SDSU. SDSU offers great opportunities for on-campus jobs, which will provide a tuition fee waiver of about $3000.
  • None of my batchmates got a scholarship or other financial aid. As per my connection with Indian students at SDSU, no one got the scholarship.
  • Rest all will get the tuition fee waived off only when a student gets a TA/RA/GA position.

Scholarship

  • I did not get a scholarship. I don't not know of any of my batchmates receiving scholarships. I am not sure how many students get scholarships at SDSU.
  • I did get a scholarship if I had accepted Boston University in the amount of $15000 but the tuition fee at Boston University was $85000, which was more than 2x of SDSU.

Scholarship

  • San Diego State University does not provide scholarships for international students unless they work as Teaching Associates (TAs). TAs are eligible for a $2,000 scholarship during the semester in which they serve in the role.
  • This opportunity allows students to gain valuable teaching experience while receiving financial support for their studies which really helps for an international students.

Scholarship

  • There are no scholarships available. Only if you become a TA; it depends on the department if they give scholarships (the Physics, Math, and Electrical departments do give TA scholarships).
  • For the Computer Engineering or Electrical Department, some students got scholarships up to $5000 during admission. But no scholarships for Big Data Analytics, Computer Science, or MIS courses.

Overview

San Diego had always been a dream city for me. It's metropolitan but also has chill areas like the beach. It's a state school so as a California resident it was an affordable choice. The college campus is a moderate size and has beautiful architecture. The area the college is in feels like it's own community.

Overview

I decided to opt for this particular college because they were giving me the most financial assistance compared to some of the other universities that I got into. It's also a great school in a great location.

Scholarship

I have received financial aids and scholarships through the school. The process is pretty easy and straight forward and the financial aid office at my university is always more than happy to help with that. As far as the selection process goes that just depends on who is administering the scholarship

Yes, I have. The process is pretty simple. You apply through your aid link account. You can see which scholarships or aid you have been awarded in one area. I've called their office with questions before and they were very helpful.
