University of California - UCSB, California, usa: 4 answered questions

Ques. How good is the University of California, Santa Barbara's Computer Science department for undergraduates?

    ● Top Answer By Diya Sharma on 04 Feb 21

Ans. Most of the undergrad CS programs have many similarities like fundamental programming, algorithms and data structures, architecture/hardware sampling, etc. UC is a solid second tier school so it won’t be so easy to get into it. It's like you are appearing at a coding school; anywhere at this stage, they're all very similar to be honest. As per the Network Environment reports, UCSB has the lead among the top 25 universities in the field of computer science.  What is worth noting is UCSB’s power that is obtained from its dynamic environments and offices. As the 3rd host on ARPAnet, they compensate for their loss. As long as you're not in the purely theoretical CS, you should be fine. The university's chancellor is also pretty good. Many other departments reach out to the CS department to resolve their issues. Overall, their administration and faculty are good and politically aware. You will have many internships and opportunities to work along with your studies so you shouldn't just focus completely on your curriculum.  Regarding employment, most graduates are well placed with their median pay scales ranging from USD 71,700 to USD 147,000. It is clear by looking at the median salary package that UCSB is quite good. Also, this CS Department has recently seen an increase in the National Research Council's most recent Ph.D. program ranking (NRC), placing their Department of Computer Science in the top ten! Concluding, It is pretty impressive  Read more

    ● Top Answer By Rajat Majumdar on 04 Feb 21

Ans. MS in Electrical Engineering from UCSB is surely one of their most popular and well-paying courses in terms of job prospects. What’s better- being located in Santa Barbara, hundreds of industries, MNCs provide some of the highest paying wages to freshers, so if you have fulfilled all their requirements and are willing to work hard, then the chances of you getting placed are good-looking. There are also some international giants that are on the list of fortune 500 who recruit their grads.  UCSB has hundreds of students pursuing full-time, part-time, and internship options at any given time. Their Electrical Engineering department has been ranked as follows: #22 Electrical Engineering PG by US News & World Report 2021 #131 Engineering and Technology by QS 2020 #35 PG Engineering and Technology by THE, 2021  You can look at their alumni’s average salaries for various positions:  Marketing, Product, and communications  USD 110,000 IT and Software development  USD 117,000 Executive management and change  USD 153,000 Sales and Business development  USD 102,000 Financial Services  USD 150,000 Consulting, accounting, and professional services  USD 78,000 Every week, many leading researchers from top research institutes come here and discuss in different campus research groups, which means you might have an hour-long conversation with someone who has worked with Enrico Fermi and other big names. Ques. With a GRE score of 306, can I get admission to the University of California at Santa Barbara for an MS in CS?

    ● Top Answer By Surbhjit Roy on 04 Feb 21

Ans. It doesn’t really depend just on your GRE score, although it is undeniable that GRE score is an important player here. Honestly speaking, the GRE of 306 may fall a little short for MS in CS at Santa Barbara, not to forget the cut-throat competition among the candidates and especially among the international students.  However, GRE is not the only aspect to be taken into account by their admission officers. If you are a well-performing student, and have research papers you have written you might still have a good chance. Your SoP, letters of recommendation and others play a key role in your selection, so make sure these are well prepared.  To put it frankly, UCSB MS is very competitive, practically as selective as UCSB CS Ph.D. program. If you apply for the Ph.D., you may have a better chance given some fair history grades, letters, and experiences. Below are some of the basic admission requirements: Academic Requirement Score (Minimum)  GPA 3.0 on a 4.0-point scale GRE Not set, performance in Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical sections is considered.  IELTS 7.0 Internet-based TOEFL 80 Paper-based TOEFL  550 In the past, UCSB CS did not focus on nurturing a broad MS program. Therefore, each year the number of slots is limited for MS students. Besides, BS/MS students take the same pool slots. If there is one year with large numbers of high-quality BS/MS students, then there could be a few spare seats as well.  So to conclude, your GRE score of 306 puts you at a less desirable spot here solely because it’s competitive. However, you might have a stroke of slight luck, if for your letter of recommendation and background! But it is slightly less of an event. Read more

Ques. Is it worth doing a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara?

    ● Top Answer By Sudha J Maheshwari on 04 Feb 21

Ans. So UC Santa Barbara is surely one of the best choices if you’re looking for firsthand exposure and research into the field of Material engineering. However you should look out for some important factors like the lab environment, faculties, and the perspective research projects. Research wise, it has really good reputation as per the various rankings: UC Santa Barbara ranked at #34among the “Best National Universities,” in both public and private institutions.  The College of Engineering of UC Santa Barbara is ranked 20th among U.S. public universities.  It is also listed among the top 5 in the world in the field of research impact. Since many years, their Department of Materials has been placed among the best graduate programs in the USA. It is well-known withmany distinctions and a supportive environment that would help you focus more. Their research will also help UCSB Materials become the nation's leading program and an innovation engine for materials science and engineering. Their faculties will provide you with enough attention and resources while in research.  However you’ll find a lot of competition here just like in any prestigious university. With an acceptance rate of only 21%, there is active competition which means you must have a thorough check of your documents, marks requirements and other prerequisites asked. All this is worth is as their alumni get a good salary package. Here are the average job salaries:  Marketing, Product, and communications  USD110,000 IT and Software development  USD117,000 Executive management and change  USD153,000 Sales and Business development  USD102,000 Financial Services  USD150,000 Consulting, accounting, and professional services  USD78,000 To sum it up, it is a great place and worth attending the Ph.D. program. From their rankings to their average salaries, all these really weigh heavy if you’re trying to compare it with another similar one. Read more

I always wanted to pursue my higher studies from abroad. In this regard, after completing my bachelor's I convinced my parents to send me to the USA for further studies. After convincing them a lot, they agreed to it. I chose this university on the suggestion of my elder brother. I applied to the university online through the official website. I also paid $70 as the application fee.

    Course Curriculum :

After going through the course we will be able to demonstrate broad knowledge of applied statistical methods and data analysis. I think the course is providing in-depth knowledge required by the leaders in the relevant fields.

I have completed my bachelor's degree in computer science from a private college in India. I have always been interested in research and aspire to become a professor. Hackathons, coding challenges, and brain teasers have always been a passion for me which is why I decided to apply for an MS in computer science at UCSB through an online portal. The application fee cost me $140.

    Course Curriculum :

As an MS student in computer science at the University of California, I am exposed to advanced training in the field of computer science which will enable me to work in the industry or pursue graduate-level research. We get to choose from three types of curriculum, thesis-based, project-based or comprehensive examination based study.

I originally applied to UCSB because I wanted to attend UC Berkeley. When I realized the applications were the same, I decided to apply to both! The fees are normally $80 I think but I was in the free/ reduced lunch program at school so I had a few waivers for applications. I applied to eight schools all on the west coast, including UCSB, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, SDSU, Cal Poly SLO, University of Washington, and University of Oregon. I was accepted to all except UCLA. When it came down to choosing a college, UCSB was the clear choice. They offered me significant financial aid, it's located on a beach, only a train ride away from home, and academically prestigious! We were ranked the 5th best public school in the nation and the happiest college students in California by Princeton Review! While cost is very important, I needed to choose somewhere I felt like I could be happy. The social, athletic, and academic aspects of the school were very appealing to my extroverted side. I had a 4.2 GPA overall in high school, played varsity women's lacrosse, and competed in the academic league. While I did take several AP classes, I would consider myself a medium, to the above-average student in high school. I got a 1420 on my SAT and a 30 on my ACT. The university seems to prioritize outside commitments and personal statements much higher than test scores through the admissions process in my opinion

    Course Curriculum :

The course curriculum is very rigorous but extremely captivating. The chemistry and biology series is quite excruciating, but help understand in-depth the fundamentals of psychology and how our brains work. So far I have loved every class, including Math 34A (Calculus for Social sciences). If you prioritize studying and read after the lecture, it is easy to succeed in this program! I would love to provide a copy of the curriculum and my two-year plan if needed.

One of the reasons I chose UC Santa Barbara as a college to go to is because of its close proximity to the ocean and because I wanted to experience the social life on campus which I heard was pretty good at UC Santa Barbara. My experience was amazing because there were tons of things to do like go out for dinner, party on the weekend or going to town for great food. Also, I chose UCSB as my college because before I came here I visited the campus just once and fell in love with the scenery.

    Course Curriculum :

UC Santa Barbara offers many great programs and classes for students that are great whether they are for your major or just recreation you get to enjoy each one of them since the professors are really down to earth and are willing to spend time with you. Some classes get full but that is why you have sections and get shorter classes with some really good TA's. I took Geography with Professor Sweeney and he has a lot of knowledge on the subject and he is also a pretty fun guy.

UCSB has a great reputation and a diverse student body. Its campus is located right on the beach and students are friendly and fun. There is a good party scene as well as great academics and there is always something to do around campus.

    Course Curriculum :

The curriculum is challenging. There is definitely no such thing as an easy A at this school. In my major especially, it's hard to even pass classes and I have had to retake a few classes. However, if you are disciplined and work hard you should be able to graduate.
