Lake Superior State University is located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. A small public university with an enrollment of around 2,000 students, it is the smallest public university in Michigan.

Founded in 1946, the 115-acre campus hosts a number of historic buildings. Sharing the international border of Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario, it provides the best of both a large city and a small town.

The University also boasts of the country’s first accredited four-year Fire Science program. Lake Superior State University has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association since 1968.

LSSU offers admission to students twice a year in the fall and spring season to study in the USA.

Programs, Campus, and Residence

Programs

  • The University has 5 unique departments offering various programs like ranging from criminal justice, liberal arts, health, to innovations and solutions, and environment.
  • The University offers academic programs of 4 years, Associate Degrees of 2 years and certificates of 1-2 years.
  • Lake Superior State University is unique for its environment based programs, such as fire sciences and parks and recreation.

Campus

The University has a single campus spanning over 115-acres. The campus life is very vibrant with over 60+ student club organizations, they also host regular lifestyle programs, services, and events. The campus also boasts of social justice through civic engagement.

Residence

The Laker Housing encourages prospective students to fill in either the online form or the PDF version along with a payment of 350 USD. Students can choose from various residential halls:

  • Osborn Hall: Three-storied co-ed residence hall with 120 rooms. The hall provides a study lounge, mailbox, laundry rooms, TV lounges, and 24 small lounges are located through the hall. The hall also has a shared community bathroom.
  • Brady Hall: A men’s residence housing 196 students, consisting of single, double and quadruple rooms. The hall also has a study lounge, mailboxes, laundry room, kitchen, game room, and recreation room.
  • Student Village: The village offers four double-occupancy rooms, traditionally for sophomores. Co-ed by unit, it has 36 suites hosting four bedrooms, a common area, and a bathroom. Over 288 students can stay in this village.
  • Living Learning Communities: Specialised residences for students with similar academic interests and career goals. Each LLC has a kitchen, laundry room, dining area, common room, and a study room.

The Quarterdeck Dining Hall at the university includes a wide variety of fresh food to satisfy one’s appetite. It offers all meals of the day including exquisite snacks such as soup, salad, deli, pizza, grill etc. The University also has a gallery, which offers fast food, Starbucks and the likes of the town. Also, students can look for off-campus student housing to stay in the USA.

Admission Process

Admission at LSSU is offered twice a year in the fall and spring season to its students under various categories. The admission process of an international student varies from that of a domestic student, they are as follows:

How to Apply: All applications are to be made after Sign In on the official admissions portal of Lake Superior State University.

Application Fee: The University does not take any application fee.

Application Deadline: The University takes applications on a rolling basis and encourages students to apply at the earliest.

  • Submit ACT (19+) or SAT (980+) test scores

The University ranks #1 as the Most Affordable College in Michigan. The University offers a diversity of scholarships for incoming freshmen to suit the requirements of all students. Some of the scholarships offered at LSSU are:

Laker Gold Scholarship:

  • This scholarship provides full-tuition for 16 credits per semester and is renewable.
  • Up to three scholarships will be awarded each year through the Lake Gold Competition.

Board of Trustees Scholarship:

  • The student must meet the Board of Trustees Distinguished Scholarship criteria
  • They must have applied for admission to be invited to attend the annual competition and respond within the invitation date.

Work While You Study

Student Employment is of utmost priority and concern at Lake Superior State University. The University makes an effort in ensuring that not only domestic but international students also get a share in the experience and job market. Though International students have it a little tougher with F-1 visas and employment, the University simplifies and helps F-1 visa students at every step.

On-Campus Employment: Only full-time F-1 students are eligible for on-campus employment, the job should be directly affiliated with Lake Superior State University. They need to work full-time in breaks.

However, International students need to complete additional employment paperwork authorization before every employment activity. A list of instructions, guidelines, and checklist are separately provided for F-1 students.
