Master of Science [MS] (Mechanical Engineering)
Field of Study:
$30,348 /Yr
Arizona State University Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering is a 30-credit, full-time, in-person graduate degree in Tempe. ASU publishes no fixed completion duration, and applicants need a bachelor’s or master’s degree plus a minimum GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. For Indian planning, this is roughly 60% to 70% or CGPA 6.0 to 7.0 on 10; calculated tuition is US$53,100 (INR 50.75 Lakhs) for Spring 2027.
The course builds advanced capability across mechanical design, system dynamics and control, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, thermodynamics and energy. It suits applicants with mechanical or aerospace preparation who want industrial research, product innovation or doctoral study. The portfolio, applied-project and thesis routes create flexibility, but a thesis requires early faculty planning and the programme does not promise a fixed completion timeline.
- The plan includes 12 or 15 credits in a major area of emphasis and 6 or 9 technical-elective credits.
- Students can use MAE 593 Applied Project, MAE 599 Thesis or a portfolio as the culminating experience.
- Eligible ASU engineering undergraduates can pursue an accelerated bachelor’s plus master’s route with approved shared coursework.
Current Admission Status
Applications for the Spring 2027 intake are Open. International student deadline: 1 August 2026 priority deadline.
ASU reviews complete applications received after the priority date on a space-available basis. Indian applicants should submit a complete file promptly and treat the published date as the first review point.
ASU MS Mechanical Engineering Fees and Living Costs 2027
Spring 2027 planning uses ASU’s 2026-27 international graduate engineering schedule. The programme requires 30 credits, but ASU bills by enrolled credit and semester, so calculated tuition is not a flat programme invoice.
Target-cycle fee context: The schedule provides the international graduate rate, a nine-credit semester example, fixed charges, application fee and deposit. The table keeps published amounts separate from the calculated 30-credit tuition.
| Fee item | Amount (USD) | INR equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| International graduate tuition per credit | US$1,770 | INR 1.69 Lakhs |
| Tuition for a nine-credit semester | US$15,930 | INR 15.22 Lakhs |
| Nine-credit semester tuition plus listed university fees | US$16,759 | INR 16.02 Lakhs |
| Calculated tuition-only total for 30 credits | US$53,100 | INR 50.75 Lakhs |
| International graduate application fee | US$115 | INR 10,991 |
| Graduate enrollment deposit, including US$150 tuition credit | US$250; US$150 credit | INR 23,892; INR 14,335 credit |
All INR conversions in the article use a conversion rate of USD 1 = INR 95.5699 as of 15 August 2026. Rates fluctuate daily, verify before applying.
Source: ASU 2026-27 graduate tuition schedule and international graduate admission fee information.
The 30-credit tuition figure is calculated as US$1,770 (INR 1.69 Lakhs) multiplied by 30. It excludes fixed semester fees, health insurance, books, transportation and personal expenses.
- Budget the published US$16,759 (INR 16.02 Lakhs) nine-credit semester total when modelling each standard full-time term.
- Keep the US$250 (INR 23,892) deposit separate because only US$150 (INR 14,335) is applied as a tuition credit.
- Use the calculated US$53,100 (INR 50.75 Lakhs) tuition-only figure as a floor rather than a final degree invoice.
Cost of Living in Tempe for Mechanical Engineering Students
ASU estimates US$18,819 (INR 17.99 Lakhs) annually for on-campus housing and meals. This combined estimate does not provide separate rent or food figures.
Living-cost basis: The monthly amount below divides the annual estimate by 12, making it a planning calculation rather than a separate ASU monthly charge.
| Expense | Monthly (USD) | Monthly (INR) |
|---|---|---|
| On-campus housing and meals, monthly equivalent | US$1,568.25 | INR 1.50 Lakhs |
| On-campus housing and meals, annual official estimate | US$18,819 | INR 17.99 Lakhs |
The calculated 30-credit tuition plus one annual housing-and-meals estimate equals US$71,919 (INR 68.73 Lakhs). This baseline excludes fixed semester fees, insurance, books, transport and personal costs, so it is not a full degree price.
Because ASU publishes no fixed completion duration, Indian applicants should model additional housing years separately and keep loan headroom for a longer plan.
Check Out: ASU graduate programmes and costs
Budget note
The calculated baseline combines verified tuition and housing inputs but omits several billed costs, so applicants should secure a semester-level estimate before accepting an offer.
ROI reality: ASU publishes a clear per-credit rate, but fixed fees and an unfixed completion timeline make semester-by-semester funding essential.
ASU MS Mechanical Engineering Admission 2027
The formal threshold is a bachelor’s or master’s degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution and a minimum GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. For Indian planning, ASU’s threshold is approximately 60% to 70% or CGPA 6.0 to 7.0 on 10, while ASU decides equivalency.
ASU states that preferred applicants hold undergraduate degrees in aerospace engineering or mechanical engineering, and the programme describes admission as highly competitive. Applicants from another engineering field should therefore make mechanics, thermodynamics, fluids, design or related preparation visible in the transcript and statement.
Published eligibility and selection context: The table separates the university threshold from the preparation that can affect how an Indian application is read.
| Requirement | ASU Mechanical Engineering MS standard | Indian applicant action |
|---|---|---|
| Academic degree | Bachelor’s or master’s degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution | Present the degree title, institution status and technical course sequence clearly |
| Academic performance | Minimum GPA 3.00 on a 4.00 scale in the last 60 bachelor’s hours or an applicable master’s degree | Use approximately 60% to 70% or CGPA 6.0 to 7.0 on 10 for planning, while ASU decides equivalency |
| Preferred preparation | Undergraduate aerospace engineering or mechanical engineering degree preferred | Map mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, design and mathematics courses to the programme |
| Required materials | Graduate application, application fee, official transcripts, personal statement, resume or curriculum vitae, three recommendation letters and English proof | Use technical referees and connect the statement to a mechanical engineering problem |
| Graduate Record Examination (GRE) | Not required for master’s degrees in the Fulton Schools | Submit a GRE score only when it adds evidence that the rest of the file does not provide |
| Programme structure | 30 credits with a portfolio, thesis or MAE 593 Applied Project culminating experience | Choose the route after assessing research goals, faculty access and completion planning |
The GPA is an eligibility floor rather than a published course profile, so it does not establish an admission score target. A technical transcript map can reduce uncertainty when an Indian degree uses different course names.
English Language Requirements
ASU requires international applicants to submit English proof unless an approved exemption applies. IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo use different scoring systems, so Indian applicants should report the exact test and scale.
| English route | Published minimum | Indian applicant implication |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System) | 6.5 overall | Use the Academic test and verify whether any updated component rule applies |
| TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test) | 4.0 overall for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026; 80 for tests taken before 21 January 2026 | Use the scale that matches the test date and do not self-convert the result |
| PTE (Pearson Test of English) | 60 overall | Send an approved score report and check the accepted test format |
| Duolingo English Test | 105 | Share the result through the official verification route after testing |
| English-medium degree exemption | Possible through the required form when an international degree used English as its sole medium of instruction | Submit official evidence with the exemption request rather than assuming a waiver |
- Use the TOEFL test date to select the current 1.0 to 6.0 scale or the earlier 0 to 120 scale.
- Arrange the English test early enough to replace a weak result or support an exemption request before file review.
- Place English evidence and the prerequisite map beside the application checklist so missing documents do not delay completion.
The published English minimum is clear, but the preferred mechanical or aerospace background remains the central academic fit signal. Applicants should resolve prerequisite gaps before relying on the portfolio, project or thesis route.
Tip for Indian students: Treat the 3.00 GPA as the formal floor, then make mechanical preparation verifiable through course titles, syllabi and a focused statement.
ASU MS Mechanical Engineering Application 2027
The Spring 2027 route remains current because ASU labels 1 August 2026 as a priority deadline, not a final deadline. Complete applications received after priority are reviewed on a space-available basis, while Fall 2027 has a 31 December 2026 priority deadline.
ASU publishes no decision date or time-of-day cutoff for these programme deadlines. The university’s international schedule separately lists 11 December 2026 as the final date to issue an I-20 outside the United States, so visa documentation needs its own timeline.
Forward-looking application calendar: The table includes both published intakes and the current international document milestone.
| Intake or stage | Published date or status | Applicant action |
|---|---|---|
| Spring 2027 Mechanical Engineering MS application | Priority deadline: 1 August 2026; later complete files reviewed on a space-available basis | Submit the complete file and monitor the portal after the priority review point |
| Spring 2027 I-20 issuance outside the United States | Final date: 11 December 2026 | Prepare financial and identity documents after admission so ASU can issue the immigration record |
| Spring 2027 classes | First day: 11 January 2027 | Plan visa processing, travel and arrival around the published start date |
| Fall 2027 Mechanical Engineering MS application | Priority deadline: 31 December 2026 | Use this intake when additional preparation or funding time is needed |
The published deadlines show dates but no clock time or timezone, so an exact IST cutoff cannot be calculated. The ASU portal timestamp controls, making earlier submission safer for Indian applicants.
Application Strategy for Indian Applicants
Submit one complete graduate application that connects your academic record to mechanical engineering study. ASU reviews applications after the priority date only when space remains, which increases the value of a complete file at the earliest available review point.
- Map mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, design and mathematics subjects to the Mechanical Engineering MS curriculum before choosing the intake.
- Write the personal statement around one technical problem, the methods you want to develop and the portfolio, project or thesis route you can support.
- Ask three recommenders to describe technical reasoning, project execution and research potential instead of repeating transcript marks.
- Arrange official transcripts and authorised English translations because applicant-made translations are not accepted by ASU.
The application fee is US$115 (INR 10,991), and a GRE score is not required for master’s applications. Applicants should therefore spend preparation time on prerequisite evidence, the statement and accurate document submission.
Application tip: Because Spring 2027 files after 1 August 2026 are space dependent, submit every required document together and keep Fall 2027 as the documented alternative.
ASU MS Mechanical Engineering Scholarships 2027
ASU publishes no Mechanical Engineering-specific target-cycle scholarship amount or deadline in the verified programme material. Institution-wide merit review, Fulbright funding and graduate assistantships can support international students, but none should be treated as guaranteed tuition remission.
Funding status: The table distinguishes awards that may reduce educational costs from support that is appointment dependent or limited to enrolled-student travel.
| Funding route | Published value or status | Eligibility and action |
|---|---|---|
| ASU graduate merit-based funding | Route confirmed; target-cycle amount and deadline unpublished | Review the offer and department instructions before treating any award as part of the budget |
| Fulbright Foreign Student Program | Selected incoming international students may receive tuition, insurance and a monthly stipend | Follow the ASU and home-country commission route, with award terms determined through selection |
| Graduate assistantship | Appointment-dependent; tuition award and stipend are not guaranteed, and fees or programme charges may remain payable | Ask the department about available appointments and retain funding for charges not covered |
| Graduate College travel award | Up to US$500 per fiscal year (INR 47,785) | Eligible enrolled campus-immersion graduate students may use it for graduate travel, not tuition |
For Indian applicants, the most material funding risk is the absence of a published Mechanical Engineering award amount for Spring 2027. A written award is therefore more useful than an assumed percentage reduction when calculating the US$53,100 (INR 50.75 Lakhs) tuition-only baseline.
- Track the ASU merit route separately because its unpublished amount cannot reduce the calculated tuition before an offer is issued.
- Use the Fulbright route only after checking the Indian commission’s eligibility and timetable because the award is selected rather than automatic.
- Treat an assistantship as upside until appointment terms state the tuition treatment, stipend and remaining programme charges.

Funding note
Because ASU does not publish a target-cycle Mechanical Engineering award value, applicants should secure a no-aid budget and subtract only written funding.
Scholarship reality: The verified routes can reduce funding pressure, but the programme’s target-cycle award values remain unpublished, so loan planning should start from gross tuition.
ASU MS Mechanical Engineering Salary 2027
ASU does not publish a Mechanical Engineering MS cohort salary, offer rate or placement rate. The closest official evidence is Fulton Schools graduate outcomes for Spring 2025, which combines graduate programmes rather than this course.
The course page identifies engineering, engineering management and research engineering as career directions. Those roles describe preparation, while the outcome figures below provide broader school-level context and an external labour-market benchmark.
Employment evidence scope: The first table reports outcomes without presenting them as Mechanical Engineering MS placement results.
| Evidence scope | Cohort | Measure | Published result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fulton Schools graduate outcomes | Spring 2025 graduates | Employed, continuing education, volunteering or military within six months | 73% |
| Fulton Schools graduate outcomes | Spring 2025 graduates | Graduates continuing education | 4% |
| Mechanical Engineering MS programme page | Current programme description | Career directions | Engineer, engineering manager or director, research engineer |
The 73% figure is a combined positive-outcome measure, not a job offer rate. It is useful for judging the wider engineering environment, but it cannot establish the probability of a Mechanical Engineering MS graduate receiving employment.
Salary Benchmarks and ROI
For ROI planning, the verified tuition-only baseline is US$53,100 (INR 50.75 Lakhs), while one annual housing-and-meals estimate is US$18,819 (INR 17.99 Lakhs). These inputs show the funding scale, but they do not create a payback forecast because course salary and completion duration are unpublished.
- The Fulton Schools Spring 2025 median full-time salary is US$95,000 (INR 90.79 Lakhs), so use it only as school-level context and request course-specific employment evidence.
- ASU’s O*NET benchmark lists US mechanical engineers at US$102,320 (INR 97.79 Lakhs), so treat it as market context, not expected graduate pay.
- The course has no published offer rate, so model loan repayment without assuming the US$95,000 (INR 90.79 Lakhs) school-level median and test the downside case.
- The STEM-eligible course may support a 12-month Optional Practical Training period plus a conditional 24-month extension, so verify eligibility before using the work window in funding plans.
- The portfolio, applied-project and thesis routes can change faculty planning and completion timing, so confirm the route and likely schedule before borrowing the full tuition baseline.
| Evidence scope | Cohort or period | Salary measure | Amount (USD) | INR equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fulton Schools graduate outcomes | Spring 2025 graduates | Median full-time salary | US$95,000 | INR 90.79 Lakhs |
| External market benchmark cited by ASU SEMTE using O*NET | United States occupational benchmark | Mechanical engineer median salary | US$102,320 | INR 97.79 Lakhs |
Source: ASU Fulton Schools Graduate Degree Outcomes and ASU SEMTE career outcomes using O*NET data.
The US$95,000 (INR 90.79 Lakhs) median is gross pay for a combined graduate cohort, not take-home income or a course guarantee. Taxes, location, benefits and filing status change net pay, so use a current United States tax calculator before estimating repayment.
ROI reality: ASU provides useful school-level and market context, but no course salary or offer rate, so Indian applicants should secure funding without assuming a payback period.
USA Visa for ASU MS Mechanical Engineering Students 2027
International students enter this in-person Tempe programme on an F-1 student visa. F-1 status permits study under the university’s immigration record, while the course’s STEM classification may support post-completion work authorization. ASU lists a US$185 visa fee (INR 17,680) and a US$350 SEVIS fee (INR 33,449), before other personal visa costs.
STEM means Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and the extension is conditional rather than automatic. H-1B is a specialty-occupation work status, while permanent residence has no fixed course-linked timeline.
- Standard Optional Practical Training (OPT) provides up to 12 months after qualifying completion, so confirm the employment start and application dates with the international office.
- The STEM OPT extension can add 24 months when the degree, employer and training arrangement qualify, so verify the current degree classification before relying on 36 months.
- H-1B wage treatment uses the higher of the actual wage or prevailing wage, so a future employer and role determine the relevant wage evidence.
- F-2 status may cover a spouse and unmarried minor children, but F-2 dependants are not employment-authorized, so include a separate household income plan.
Check Out: USA post-study work options
Visa reality: The STEM listing can extend the possible work window, but qualification depends on immigration rules and employment conditions, so do not treat it as a placement guarantee.
ASU MS Mechanical Engineering Ranking 2027
ASU’s Mechanical Engineering graduate programme holds the No. 45 position in the 2026 U.S. News Graduate School Specialty ranking, including No. 24 among public universities.
This is a discipline-specific graduate ranking rather than an overall university position or a course employment result. It can help applicants identify the programme’s external academic context, but it cannot replace curriculum fit, funding evidence or course-level outcomes.
Ranking scope: ASU reports the Mechanical Engineering specialty position and its public-university subset in the same 2026 edition.
| Ranking system | Edition | Scope | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. News Graduate School Specialty Rankings | 2026 | Mechanical Engineering graduate programme | No. 45 |
| U.S. News Graduate School Specialty Rankings | 2026 | Mechanical Engineering among public universities | No. 24 |
Source: ASU Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering rankings page.
The ranking supports academic context for a research or industrial applicant, while the missing course-specific salary and offer-rate data keeps employment risk unresolved. Use the ranking as one input after checking the thesis or applied-project route.
