New York University Tandon School of Engineering Tuition Deposit and Payment Options

Admitted MS students confirm the offer with a $500 (INR 47,798) non-refundable graduate tuition deposit. The deposit is credited to your first semester tuition bill, so it is not an additional cost, just the earliest slice of it.

New York University Tandon School of Engineering Methods of Payment

  • Bank wire transfer (SWIFT) from an Indian NRO or SB account, 3 to 5 working days to clear
  • Flywire, NYU’s international payment partner, accepting UPI, IMPS, RTGS, and forex card, 2 to 3 working days
  • Forex prepaid card (Niyo, BookMyForex, HDFC, ICICI, SBM), fastest for smaller amounts under $10,000
  • US-based education loan disbursement direct to NYU Bursar (Sallie Mae, MPOWER, Prodigy)
  • Indian education loan disbursement via bank wire (HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, InCred, SBI)

Flywire is what NYU actually promotes on the Bursar portal and it saves you 1.5 to 2.5% versus a raw SWIFT wire because it locks the FX at initiation.

Steps to Pay Tuition Fee for International Students at New York University Tandon School of Engineering

  1. Accept the admission offer inside the NYU Albert student portal (NYUHome login)
  2. Pay the $500 (INR 47,798) graduate tuition deposit online, non-refundable
  3. Receive your I-20 from the NYU Office of Global Services, generally within 5 to 10 working days
  4. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee and DS-160 MRV fee before scheduling the F-1 visa interview at a US Consulate in India
  5. Register for classes inside NYU Albert once the visa is granted; semester tuition invoice appears in Bursar Bill Payment Center
  6. Pay the semester balance by the invoice due date, either as a single instalment or through NYU’s monthly instalment plan (4 to 5 monthly payments per term, small enrolment fee applies)
  7. Retain every payment receipt in your visa-file folder; you will need them for F-1 renewals, OPT applications, and any I-20 update

Tip for Indian Students: For a Spring 2027 admit, the enrolment deposit must clear NYU by mid-November 2026 to keep the I-20 timeline workable for a mid-January visa slot; a SWIFT wire from India can take 3 to 5 working days plus intermediary bank delays, so initiate 10 to 12 working days before your deposit deadline or use Flywire to remove the lag. For Fall 2027 admits, the same buffer applies but the calendar is much friendlier, so most Indian applicants can safely use bank wire without stress.

Hidden Costs of Studying at New York University Tandon School of Engineering

For a Fall 2027 MS admit, the largest first-year hidden cost is the mandatory NYU Student Health Insurance Plan at $5,100 (INR 4.88 Lakhs) per year, which is billed to your Bursar account whether or not you have Indian travel cover.

  • NYU SHIP mandatory health insurance: $5,100 (INR 4.88 Lakhs) per year, waivable only with approved US-based cover
  • F-1 visa stack (one-time): SEVIS I-901 + DS-160 MRV
  • NYU Tandon graduate application fee (per programme): $90 (INR 8,604)
  • Non-refundable enrolment deposit: $500 (INR 47,798), credited to Year 1 tuition
  • Setup and arrival costs: winter clothing INR 25,000 to INR 40,000, first-month rent security deposit two months’ rent (~$4,000 or INR 3.82 Lakhs)
  • Wire transfer fees on Indian bank wires: 0.5 to 1% each, plus $25 to $40 receiving bank fee per transaction
  • IELTS or TOEFL retake: INR 16,900 (IELTS) or $260 / INR 24,855 (TOEFL) if your first score falls short
  • OPT and STEM OPT filing fees during degree: $410 per application (twice for STEM extension), INR 39,194 each

Budget approximately INR 8 to 10 Lakhs for first-year hidden costs beyond tuition and headline living: this covers health insurance, visa stack, application and deposit, setup, and transfer fees combined.

Note: Families almost always forget the NYU Student Health Insurance Plan. At $5,100 (INR 4.88 Lakhs) per year, over a 2-year MS it is INR 9.76 Lakhs, and there is no way out of it unless you already hold approved US-based insurance (Indian travel insurance is not accepted). Bake it into the loan sanction limit from Day 1.

Fee Saving Strategies for Indian Students at New York University Tandon School of Engineering

For Fall 2027 MS admits, the highest-value saving lever is the Merit Scholarship stack combined with off-campus shared housing: even a modest 15% Merit award plus shared Sunset Park or Jersey City rent trims the two-year all-in from INR 1.61 Crore to about INR 1.28 Crore, a saving of INR 33 Lakhs.

  • Off-campus shared housing in Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, or Jersey City: cuts annual living from INR 41.65 Lakhs to about INR 34 Lakhs, a saving of INR 7 to 8 Lakhs per year
  • On-campus part-time work at up to 20 hours per week during term (F-1 rule): earns $16 to $20 per hour, INR 1,530 to INR 1,910, for annual side income of INR 12 to 15 Lakhs
  • Section 80E of the Indian Income Tax Act: interest paid on your Indian education loan is fully deductible from taxable income for up to 8 years post-graduation, worth INR 3 to 6 Lakhs across your STEM OPT window
  • OPT and 24-month STEM OPT: NYU Tandon MS graduates get a 36-month post-study US work window; a $95,000 to $110,000 starting salary (INR 90.82 to INR 105.16 Lakhs annualised) pays down loan principal fast
  • Instalment plan on NYU tuition: splitting each semester into 4 to 5 monthly Bursar instalments avoids drawing the full loan in one shot and cuts your loan interest bill by INR 1 to 2 Lakhs across the MS

Tip for Indian Students: For your Fall 2027 MS, front-load the JN Tata Endowment (up to INR 12 Lakhs) and Inlaks (up to INR 95.60 Lakhs) applications as soon as they open in January 2027. Even a partial Inlaks award of INR 20 to 25 Lakhs is the single biggest lever available to an Indian student targeting NYU Tandon, and outweighs every housing, transport, and food optimisation combined.

Is New York University Tandon School of Engineering Worth the Cost for Indian Students

At INR 1.61 Crore for a two-year MS, Tandon is worth it if your target is a US tech, quant, or engineering role: 95% of Tandon graduates are employed or in further study within six months (school-published outcome), and undergraduate starting salaries run 29% above the STEM average.

  • Post-study, an F-1 visa holder gets 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving three years to earn, repay, and pursue an H-1B sponsorship.
  • On a $105,000 (INR 100.38 Lakhs) starting salary in NYC tech, an INR 80 Lakh Indian education loan EMI of INR 1.08 Lakhs per month equals roughly 13% of gross monthly pay, which is inside typical banker comfort for loan servicing.

Key Insight: The number that makes NYU Tandon defensible as a Fall 2027 MS decision is payback horizon: at a NYC-typical Tandon MS starting salary of $105,000 (INR 100.38 Lakhs) and a 40% loan-servicing budget on take-home, a full INR 1.61 Crore loan is retirable in 5 to 6 years post-graduation, well inside the 36-month STEM OPT window plus a two-year H-1B extension. If your target salary is closer to $85,000 (INR 81.26 Lakhs), rework the plan with a Merit Scholarship and shared housing to bring the loan under INR 1.30 Crore.

For a Fall 2027 MS start, budget INR 1.61 Crore end-to-end and target a 15 to 25% reduction through Tandon’s Merit Scholarship stacked with an Inlaks or JN Tata award, taking your net outlay closer to INR 1.20 to 1.35 Crore. On an INR 80 Lakh education loan, that translates to an EMI of INR 1.08 Lakhs against a realistic post-Tandon NYC starting salary of INR 90 to 100 Lakhs, which is workable inside the 36-month STEM OPT window.

  • I found my accommodation through Facebook groups that usually go by names like "NYU housing", "Brooklyn rooms for NYU students". Facebook groups are probably the most popular medium for finding accommodation for Indian students in the US. There are tonnes of apartments (or flats) that are advertised every day on these groups. The most important thing to consider while finding a place to stay is to find the right roommates to stay with. For me, finding accommodation was a smooth process. I found a couple of seniors who had a room empty in their apartment, and I went for it. My roommates were very helpful.
  • However, a lot of my friends struggled due to the very different lifestyles of their roommates that caused a lot of tension and drama. I recommend people first look for 2-3 roommates to share an apartment with. This can too be done through Facebook Groups, Whatsapp groups or even in discord. Make sure that your group of roomies discuss their day-to-day lifestyle with each other so that you can make sure that there won't be much friction among them. Then comes the apartment hunting.
  • There are a tonne of landlords who keep students as tenants in the apartment and don't really ask for any salary slips or bank statements. I do not recommend going for brokers, as it is not very difficult to find a good place to stay, and therefore it doesn't make much sense to pay an additional broker fee.

Program Structure is poor. I hope they change it soon. It's very rigid, and kind of outdated when it comes to modern robotics. Can't complain much since it's offered by mechanical department. Professors are very good. All of the good ones have joined recently, and the robotics scene is picking pace. Will be better in coming days for sure, but don't know whether it would become as good as CMU.
