New York University Tandon School of Engineering Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
NYU Tandon expects a strong academic record backed by evidence of English proficiency and, for many technical programmes, a documented quantitative background. The core requirements for Indian applicants are summarised below.
Master’s programme requirements for Indian applicants:
- Academic: 4-year bachelor’s degree with a minimum 85% average (first class with distinction on Indian scales).
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, PTE Academic or Duolingo English Test required.
- Standardised tests: GRE is optional or waived for most Tandon MS programmes; a strong GRE quant score still helps competitive tracks such as MS Computer Science and MS Financial Engineering.
Undergraduate applicant requirements for Indian applicants:
- Academic (recommended): Class 12 with a minimum 85% aggregate (first division CBSE, ICSE or state board) with Mathematics for engineering majors.
- English proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo required; some Indian applicants qualify for a waiver based on English-medium instruction certificates.
New York University Tandon School of Engineering Acceptance Rate 2027
NYU Tandon’s overall acceptance rate is reported at around 8% (estimated figure) based on the parent NYU Common Data Set for the 2024-25 cycle. Tandon does not publish a separate school-level acceptance rate for graduate programmes, so applicants should treat the figure as directional rather than exact. Programme-level admit rates vary sharply, with MS Computer Science and MS Financial Engineering typically the toughest.
Indian applicant admit rates are not publicly disclosed. Peer schools in the New York region show similar selectivity for competitive MS tracks, so a strong quantitative profile matters more than the headline number.
Reality check: The 8% figure covers the parent NYU undergraduate pool. Master’s programmes at Tandon are less selective by design, but individual MS tracks in CS, Cybersecurity and Financial Engineering remain highly competitive for Indian applicants each Fall.

Brooklyn is cheaper than Manhattan but still one of the most expensive student cities in the United States. The table below shows typical monthly and annual budgets for a graduate student sharing an apartment near campus.
| Category | Monthly (USD) | Annual (USD) | Annual (INR lakh) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (shared apartment) | 1,500 to 2,500 | 18,000 to 30,000 | 17.20 to 28.67 |
| Food | 400 to 600 | 4,800 to 7,200 | 4.59 to 6.88 |
| Transportation (MTA monthly pass) | 130 to 200 | 1,560 to 2,400 | 1.49 to 2.29 |
| Books and supplies | 80 to 100 | 960 to 1,200 | 0.92 to 1.15 |

New York University Tandon School of Engineering Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
NYU Tandon reports strong post-graduation outcomes anchored to its Brooklyn location inside the New York technology and finance corridor.
- Employment outcomes: 95% of graduates are working, in further study, or both within 6 months of graduation, per NYU Tandon Fast Facts.
- Undergraduate starting salaries: reported at 29% above the national STEM average, per NYU Tandon Fast Facts.

- Recruiter sectors: technology (cloud, cybersecurity, data), finance (investment banks, hedge funds, quant firms), consulting, and civil infrastructure.
- Career support: Wasserman Center at NYU and Tandon Career Services run resume clinics, mock interviews, and on-campus recruiter events every semester.
Insider note: Indian STEM graduates lean heavily on the 24-month STEM OPT extension to secure H-1B sponsorship. Tandon’s Manhattan and Brooklyn recruiting pipeline into finance and tech firms is a real advantage, and networking through NYU alumni matters more than headline salary numbers.
For Indian applicants specifically, the combination of a STEM-designated degree, 36 months of OPT and CPT work authorisation, and a large Indian alumni base across NYC finance and tech firms builds a real payback path within four to six years of graduation.
Tandon is not the right fit for candidates optimising purely on lowest cost or on Ivy League brand alone. Applicants who need lower tuition should consider NJIT in nearby Newark, which delivers a comparable New York job market at a fraction of the sticker price. Applicants targeting elite quant research should still weigh Columbia SEAS and Cornell Tech.
New York University Tandon School of Engineering FAQs
Ques. How long does OPT last for New York University Tandon School of Engineering STEM graduates?
Ans. Every engineering degree at NYU Tandon is STEM-designated. Graduates qualify for the standard 12-month OPT plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving a total of 36 months of legal work authorisation in the United States on the F-1 visa. Ques. Can Indian students with a 3-year bachelor’s apply to NYU Tandon?
Ans. NYU Tandon officially requires a 4-year bachelor’s degree for MS admissions. Indian applicants with 3-year degrees are not automatically rejected. A WES course-by-course evaluation, combined with a strong post-graduate diploma or an Indian master’s degree, often satisfies the requirement. Global lenders such as Prodigy Finance and MPower Financing offer no-cosigner loans for Indian students at NYU Tandon. Loan sanction typically requires the I-20 form and admission letter. Compare interest rates and repayment terms before signing.
Ques. Does NYU Tandon offer conditional admission to Indian applicants?
Ans. NYU Tandon offers conditional admission for candidates who meet academic requirements but fall short on English proficiency. Admitted applicants may enrol in the NYU American Language Institute pathway to build up to the required TOEFL or IELTS score, then transition to full MS status. Confirm the current conditional admission and pathway options on the graduate admissions page before accepting an offer.
Ques. How do Indian students verify transcripts for New York University Tandon School of Engineering?
Ans. NYU Tandon accepts WES course-by-course evaluations for Indian transcripts. The WES process starts with a request to your Indian university to send sealed transcripts to WES. Total lead time runs 6 to 8 weeks. Applicants should begin at least 3 months before the application deadline. Original degree certificates and mark sheets require apostille attestation from the Ministry of External Affairs in India.

- The professors are very approachable and sometimes they also help students in landing full time and part time roles.
- NYU is situated in the heart of New York City, and this basically means that the students get to experience life in the city many dream of.
- The plethora of career events help students in building a robust network of world class connections.
Dislikes
- Although there are huge number of courses offered in each program, the most relevant courses (which are also the most popular ones) run out of seats and some students end up taking difficult courses that might not even be related to their program.
- Some of the courses give very lengthy assignments to students which are mostly mechanical work. Some of these long and boring assignments take multiple days to complete.
- As NYU likes to hire professionals as staff to enhance the on campus experience for students, this also means that there aren't as many on campus part time work available as in other universities in the USA.
Campus Life
- NYU has two primary campus locations in NYC. One is the Tandon Engineering Campus, situated in the Brooklyn Tech Triangle and the other is situated around the iconic Washington Square Park. Each of these campuses is loaded with all the important facilities that a student needs. For example, every NYU building has a library and a study space for students and there is a dedicated library building called Bobst library.
- NYU has a dedicated building for sports called the Palladium that hosts games like basketball and swimming. Every NYU building has doctors for any emergency situation. There are numerous clubs in the NYU ecosystem. I was mostly involved with the gaming club and the chess club and I used to attend their weekly meets. The most popular club has to be the Indian Students club, there Diwali and Holi celebrations are some of the most famous events on the entire campus. Other popular events include the grad cruise parties and the gala nights. There are a tonne of extracurricular activities thanks to the plethora of student clubs.
- My favourite used to be exploring the city events. One such event was called Scavenger Hunt, organised by the literary club at NYU. In the event, we were divided into teams and had to search dozens of book stores across Manhattan in order to find clues that gave the answer to an elaborate puzzle. It was exciting to walk through beautiful neighbourhoods of NYC in search of these bookshops. This is just one example out of the huge number of such events that happen every day at NYU.

Overview
I applied to MS CS elsewhere, and got rejected from all places. This was the only US admit I had. The other one was in Europe.
Campus Life
There are a lot of activities happening throughout the year, and lot of research facilities. It's very good for ECE. For CS, prefer NYU Courant. Much better program. Very hard to get in, so peer group would be amazing there. The peer group at Tandon sucks. Filled with incompetent people.
