Master of Science [M.S] (Mechanical Engineering)
Field of Study:
$64,730 /Yr
Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering is offered through Engineering for Professionals (EP), a part-time, online degree from Baltimore, Maryland. The course offers hybrid and in-person options, while Indian applicants need a bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline plus calculus, physics and programming. Students complete 10 courses within five years; 2026-27 tuition is US$ 56,200 (INR 53.63 Lakhs) after Dean’s Fellowship support, with Fall 2026 as current intake.
The EP format trains students to translate mechanical problems into quantitative solutions, analyze experiments and apply modeling, testing and design to advanced materials and structural systems. Its distinctive structure requires one of eight focus areas, permits cross-department technical electives and offers either an all-course route or an approved thesis route. It suits working engineers seeking immediate technical application, while applicants wanting a conventional residential cohort should distinguish it from Hopkins’s separate full-time Master of Science in Engineering programme.
- Synchronous and asynchronous classes support different work schedules.
- The mechanics curriculum connects eight focus areas with electives from nine engineering departments.
- A thesis option can support research preparation when an advisor and program chair approve the plan.
Current Admission Status
Applications for the Fall 2026 intake are Open. International student deadline: Rolling admissions; no fixed programme-specific date published.
The current calendar lists 31 August 2026 as the Fall 2026 start, while JHU recommends submitting complete documents at least one month before classes. Review normally takes 4 to 6 weeks after admission requirements are met, so Indian applicants should use a future spring or summer start if the fall timeline cannot be completed.

The official arithmetic is 10 × US$ 5,620 = US$ 56,200, provided every course is graduate level and taken within 2026-27. A missing prerequisite adds US$ 1,510 (INR 1.44 Lakhs) per course, so request a course evaluation before fixing your funding amount.
Cost of Living in Baltimore for Mechanical Engineering Students
Johns Hopkins lists a 2026-27 Fall/Spring cost-of-attendance estimate of US$ 27,597 (INR 26.34 Lakhs) for housing, food, personal expenses, books, transport and health insurance.
For an Indian student studying online outside the United States, this estimate is not a mandatory bill and does not replace an India-based budget. The monthly figures below are calculated by dividing each published Fall/Spring amount by 12.
| Expense | Monthly (USD) | Monthly (INR) | Fall/Spring (USD) | Fall/Spring (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Housing, off campus | US$ 1,018 | INR 97,149 | US$ 12,215 | INR 11.66 Lakhs |
| Food, off campus | US$ 707 | INR 67,470 | US$ 8,488 | INR 8.10 Lakhs |
| Miscellaneous personal expenses | US$ 111 | INR 10,593 | US$ 1,330 | INR 1.27 Lakhs |
| Books, materials, supplies and equipment | US$ 135 | INR 12,883 | US$ 1,624 | INR 1.55 Lakhs |
| Transportation | US$ 54 | INR 5,153 | US$ 648 | INR 61,839 |
| Health insurance | US$ 274 | INR 26,148 | US$ 3,292 | INR 3.14 Lakhs |
| Total listed expenses | US$ 2,300 | INR 2.19 Lakhs | US$ 27,597 | INR 26.34 Lakhs |
A calculated U.S.-residence planning total combines the published tuition and living estimates. It uses US$ 56,200 (INR 53.63 Lakhs) plus US$ 27,597 (INR 26.34 Lakhs), producing US$ 83,797 (INR 79.97 Lakhs). Online students in India should replace the living component with their actual local costs.
Check Out: Johns Hopkins University courses and fees
ROI reality: The 2026-27 tuition basis is clear, but prerequisites and incidental charges can raise the total. The US$ 56,200 (INR 53.63 Lakhs) base still requires a confirmed course plan before registration.
Johns Hopkins MS Mechanical Engineering Admission 2026
Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline, plus calculus, physics and programming preparation.
Enrolled students typically have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. For Indian applicants, that is approximately 82% to 85% or CGPA 8.2 to 8.5 on 10.
JHU says this profile is not a requirement or guarantee because review considers academic and professional background case by case.
Academic requirements for Fall 2026: The table separates formal prerequisites from indicative academic context, so Indian applicants can identify gaps before submitting transcripts.
| Admission component | Published expectation | Indian applicant action |
|---|---|---|
| Previous degree | Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline | A four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering may fit the discipline; JHU makes the final equivalency decision. |
| Mathematics | Three semesters of college calculus, including Calculus I, II and III | Map Indian university course titles to the required calculus sequence. |
| Physics | Two semesters of college physics, including Physics I and II | Upload marksheets and syllabi when course titles do not clearly show coverage. |
| Programming | Course or practical knowledge of Python, MATLAB or C++ | Show a completed course, project or work sample using one listed language. |
| Typical course GPA | 3.3 on 4.0, approximately 82% to 85% or CGPA 8.2 to 8.5 on 10, not a cutoff | Use the range as preparation context rather than an assured admission score. |
| General EP academic context | 3.0 on 4.0 in the latter half of undergraduate study, approximately 75% to 80% or CGPA 7.5 to 8.0 on 10 | Explain upward academic performance with the transcript and curriculum vitae. |
| Graduate Record Examination (GRE) | Not required | Invest preparation time in prerequisites, English testing and the academic record. |
| Transcripts | Unofficial transcripts in the application and official transcripts before registration | Arrange electronic official delivery after an offer through JHU’s accepted process. |
| Curriculum vitae | Maximum two pages is strongly advised | Prioritise engineering projects, technical employment and measurable responsibilities. |
| Work experience | No separate work-experience requirement is published; professional background is considered | Use relevant experience to explain course fit without treating it as a substitute for prerequisites. |
International applicants may submit a credential evaluation after an offer when required, and the current page identifies WES (World Education Services) and TEC or The Evaluation Company as preferred options.
Indian applicants with missing calculus, physics or programming courses can seek provisional admission. Each listed prerequisite must be completed with a B- or better for full admission. As an approximate Indian planning reference, that grade is 70% to 75% or CGPA 7.0 to 7.5 on 10.
English Language Proficiency
International applicants must submit official English results before an offer unless admissions confirms an applicable waiver. The university lists the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), TOEFL and Duolingo English Test scores for the current policy.
Published score scales: The figures below reproduce JHU’s stated scales, including TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) policy for exams taken on or after 21 January 2026.
| Test | Minimum score | Policy detail |
|---|---|---|
| TOEFL paper-based | 600 | University-published legacy scale |
| TOEFL computer-based | 250 | University-published legacy scale |
| TOEFL Internet-based | 100 | University-published legacy scale |
| TOEFL iBT from 21 January 2026 | 5 | Current university-published revised scale |
| IELTS | 7.0 | Official result required |
| Duolingo English Test | 135 | Official result required |
- Use the university’s exact TOEFL scale for your test date and do not self-convert between the legacy and revised formats.
- Choose IELTS when a familiar band scale makes it easier to identify a weak component before submitting the score.
- Confirm any English waiver with EP admissions because an India-based degree alone does not establish an exemption on the published page.
Tip for Indian students: Mechanical Engineering applicants need a coherent prerequisite map, not only a high GPA. Check calculus, physics and programming coverage before paying for an English test or submitting the application.
Johns Hopkins MS Mechanical Engineering Application 2026
Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals uses rolling admissions, accepts applications year-round and offers Fall, Spring and Summer starts.
No fixed international deadline is published for this programme, so the practical cutoff is driven by document completion, term start and the university’s review window.
2026-27 intake schedule: The table lists every current start option, with the published international application position and the local start information available today.
| Intake | Published start | International application deadline | Decision timing | Applicant action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fall 2026 | 31 August 2026 | Rolling; no fixed programme-specific date | Typically 4 to 6 weeks after requirements are met | Submit only if the complete file can be reviewed before the start |
| Spring 2027 | 25 January 2027 | Rolling; no fixed programme-specific date | Typically 4 to 6 weeks after requirements are met | Use this start when Fall 2026 preparation cannot be completed |
| Summer 2027 | June 2027 start offered; exact date not listed in the current calendar | Rolling; no fixed programme-specific date | Typically 4 to 6 weeks after requirements are met | Confirm the exact academic-calendar date before applying |
JHU recommends applying at least one month before the intended term. Its calendar says review normally takes 4 to 6 weeks after admission requirements are met. Because Fall 2026 starts on 31 August, an incomplete file should be moved to Spring 2027 rather than treated as a guaranteed late admission.
The university publishes deadline dates without a fixed portal time or timezone because the process is continuing. Submit earlier than the intended term and retain confirmation of every uploaded document.
Application File for Indian Applicants
The EP application is free and does not require the GRE. Indian applicants should build the file around the academic prerequisites, English evidence and transcript authentication.
| Application item | Current EP requirement or guidance | Practical submission step |
|---|---|---|
| Online application | Application accepted year-round with no fee | Select Mechanical Engineering and one intended start before submitting. |
| Unofficial transcripts | Upload transcripts in the application | Include the degree-awarding institution first and add other institutions after submission if required. |
| Official transcripts | Required before course registration | Arrange direct electronic delivery after an offer through an accepted provider. |
| English proficiency | Official TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo result required before an offer | Send the result using the Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals reporting route. |
| Curriculum vitae | Maximum two pages strongly advised | Show engineering employment, projects, software and technical outcomes. |
| GRE | Not required | Use the time for prerequisite verification and English-test preparation. |
- Apply to only one Engineering for Professionals programme at a time because the current policy limits concurrent programme applications.
- Upload the bachelor’s transcript first and prepare a credential evaluation route for the official post-offer transcript.
- Explain the selected focus area in the curriculum vitae so the application connects prior work with the intended course plan.
- Keep a complete copy of the submitted file because EP does not accept application updates by email after submission.
Application tip: Rolling admission removes a single fixed cutoff, but it does not remove timing risk. A complete file should be submitted early enough for the 4 to 6 week review window and the chosen term’s start date.
Johns Hopkins MS Mechanical Engineering Scholarships 2026
Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals currently states that it does not offer standard scholarships, but the programme applies an automatic Dean’s Fellowship to graduate-course tuition.
The Fellowship reduces each 600-level course from US$ 6,870 (INR 6.56 Lakhs) to US$ 5,620 (INR 5.36 Lakhs). Other funding routes depend on an employer, a specific teacher condition or prior selection by an external fellowship body.
Current published funding routes: The table separates automatic tuition support from conditional funding, and no route should be deducted from the budget without written eligibility confirmation.
| Funding route | Published value | INR equivalent | Eligibility and route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dean’s Fellowship | US$ 1,250 reduction per graduate course | INR 1.19 Lakhs per course | Automatically applied to EP graduate courses during 2026-27 |
| Employer contribution programmes | Part or all of tuition | No fixed value published | Employer decides the benefit; upload the contract through JHU’s Third Party Payers system |
| STEM Maryland Teacher Education Program | Tuition waiver | No fixed value published | Qualified Maryland high school STEM teachers |
| National GEM Fellowship | Full tuition waiver, fees and US$ 7,000 stipend per Fall or Spring term | INR 6.68 Lakhs stipend per term | Apply to GEM first, secure selection and then obtain JHU admission |
| Federal graduate loans | Loan support for eligible graduate students enrolled at least half time | No fixed value published | Requires the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and separate eligibility |
The Dean’s Fellowship is the only automatic reduction built into the target-cycle tuition calculation. Because employer contributions are organised independently of the university, an Indian applicant should treat them as zero until the employer confirms the percentage, payment timing and covered courses.
The GEM route is unusually valuable but selective because students must be chosen by GEM before applying to Johns Hopkins. The Maryland teacher waiver is limited to a named occupation and location.
- Use the automatic Dean’s Fellowship in the base budget because it is already reflected in the published 2026-27 course rate.
- Ask an employer for written tuition-assistance terms before registration because unpaid third-party charges can block course registration.
- Check GEM eligibility before submitting a JHU application because the university says GEM selection must come first.
Also Check: Johns Hopkins University scholarships and funding
Scholarship reality: The automatic Dean’s Fellowship makes the published graduate rate US$ 5,620 (INR 5.36 Lakhs) per course, but most additional support is conditional. Plan from the net rate and verify every outside award before reducing the loan amount.
Johns Hopkins MS Mechanical Engineering Salary 2026
Johns Hopkins does not publish a course-cohort salary, offer rate or placement report for the online Mechanical Engineering master’s after the current programme and outcomes checks.
The programme page quotes an external PayScale benchmark of US$ 85,000 (INR 81.12 Lakhs) or more for mechanical engineers with a master’s degree. This is a market reference cited by the university, not a Johns Hopkins graduate outcome or salary guarantee.
Outcome evidence scope: The table keeps the available benchmark separate from course-specific employment evidence, which prevents a general role estimate from becoming a placement claim.
| Evidence scope | Published result | INR equivalent | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online Mechanical Engineering course cohort | No course salary or offer-rate report published after checks | Not applicable | Do not treat the market benchmark as a JHU outcome |
| University-cited external job-market benchmark | Upwards of US$ 85,000 | INR 81.12 Lakhs | Use as a gross role-level reference, not a forecast |
| Programme skill proposition | Modeling, testing, design, advanced analysis and experiments | Not applicable | Match projects and prior work to a target engineering function |

Return on Investment for Indian Students
The calculated tuition plus U.S.-residence planning budget is US$ 83,797 (INR 79.97 Lakhs). The university-cited market benchmark is US$ 85,000 (INR 81.12 Lakhs) gross.
- The online course has no published salary or offer rate, so model repayment from your India-return salary rather than US$ 85,000 (INR 81.12 Lakhs).
- The published 10-course tuition is US$ 56,200 (INR 53.63 Lakhs), so request written employer support before treating the programme as a low-debt career upgrade.
- EP international students do not receive university-sponsored student or exchange-visitor status in the United States, so exclude post-study work income from the base repayment case.
- The part-time format offers synchronous and asynchronous study, so compare the tuition against the income you can realistically preserve while studying.
Gross salary is not take-home pay because tax status, location, deductions and employment benefits change the result. Eligible U.S. tax residents can use the IRS tax withholding estimator, while nonresident students need tax advice suited to their status.
Check Out: Johns Hopkins University study options
ROI reality: The course offers a flexible technical pathway, but the absence of course-cohort outcomes and U.S. visa sponsorship makes India-return income or employer funding central to the financial case.
USA Visa for Johns Hopkins MS Mechanical Engineering 2026
Indian applicants should not plan to use an F-1 (Student) visa or J-1 (Exchange Visitor) visa for this programme. JHU states that Engineering for Professionals programmes cannot receive either sponsorship and do not issue Form I-20 or DS-2019. Students without another U.S. status permitting study must complete all coursework online from outside the United States. Optional Practical Training (OPT) is the post-study work route tied to F-1 study, but it is not available through this EP enrolment.
- The programme does not create a university-sponsored post-study work window in the United States, so exclude OPT income from the base ROI calculation.
- An H-1B (specialty occupation) route would require independent employer sponsorship, and no single course-specific salary threshold or selection outcome is published.
- H-1B required-wage rules compare the actual wage with the prevailing wage, so use a job-specific immigration assessment rather than a programme-level number.
- Employment-based permanent residence has no course-linked timeline because category, sponsorship and visa availability control the case.
- A spouse or child cannot obtain a dependant status from this online enrolment alone, so family relocation needs a separate lawful status.
Check Out: USA study and visa resources
Visa reality: The decisive immigration fact is that EP does not issue F-1 or J-1 sponsorship. Indian applicants should complete the programme from outside the United States unless another lawful status independently permits study.
Johns Hopkins MS Mechanical Engineering Ranking 2026
The online Mechanical Engineering master’s is ranked #2 in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Online Programs graduate mechanical engineering category.
This is a programme-specific online ranking. It should not be treated as a ranking of the separate full-time residential Master of Science in Engineering or as evidence of placement probability.
2026 ranking scope: The position below is reported for the online graduate mechanical engineering category and no previous position is published on the programme page.
| Ranking | Edition | Position | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. News & World Report Best Online Programs | 2026 | #2 | Graduate online mechanical engineering |
The ranking supports the programme’s online academic visibility, but it does not answer whether the course fits an applicant’s prerequisite preparation, funding plan or India-return career path. Those decisions depend on the eight focus areas, published tuition and absence of F-1 sponsorship.
Honest take: The #2 online ranking is relevant to applicants comparing online mechanical engineering options. It cannot offset the programme’s no-visa-sponsorship constraint or replace a course-level repayment analysis.
Johns Hopkins University’s online Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering fits Indian engineers seeking advanced mechanics through part-time study. Its eight focus areas, cross-department electives and thesis option create a flexible technical proposition for applicants who can map their calculus, physics and programming preparation. The five-year completion window suits working professionals, but the financial and immigration tradeoff is material. Published tuition is US$ 56,200 (INR 53.63 Lakhs) before extras, and EP provides no F-1 or J-1 sponsorship or post-study work route. Before applying, choose Fall 2026, Spring 2027 or Summer 2027 based on the rolling review window, then confirm prerequisites and written funding.

If you have completed a bachelor’s degree at a college/university in a country where the official language is not English, but where the sole/primary language of instruction, writing, and testing is English are exempted from submitting a valid ELP test score. However, you must provide documentation from the college/university confirming English Language instruction; documentation can include a certificate, letter, or other official document stating the language of instruction.
