Johns Hopkins University Eligibility for Indian Students
Johns Hopkins reviews Indian applicants holistically on academics, English proficiency, essays, and program prerequisites. There are no fixed cut-offs, but the ranges below reflect what recent admitted classes have met per the university’s admissions pages. Undergraduate and graduate paths differ sharply on academic floors and testing.
Johns Hopkins University Undergraduate Eligibility
- Class XII (CBSE, ICSE, State): 85 percent overall, 90 percent-plus in prerequisite subjects.
- Test-optional policy: SAT and ACT scores optional for Fall 2027; strong scores still strengthen competitive files.
- Curriculum: English, mathematics, and at least one science studied through Class XII.
What GPA does Johns Hopkins University need for master’s?
- Bachelor’s degree: Four-year undergraduate with 3.0 GPA equivalent (around 65 to 70 percent).
- Program prerequisites: Engineering PG needs a matching bachelor’s; MPH accepts health science and social science backgrounds.
- GRE: Optional or waived at most Johns Hopkins schools; check each program page.
Johns Hopkins University English Proficiency Minimums
All Indian applicants must show English proficiency unless a waiver applies. Accepted tests and floors:
| Test | Undergraduate Minimum | Postgraduate Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 100 | 100 |
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| Duolingo English Test | 130 | 120 |
| PTE Academic | 70 | 68 |
Does Johns Hopkins University waive IELTS for Indian students?
Yes. The English test is waived if you completed three or more years of secondary or undergraduate study taught entirely in English. Most CBSE, ICSE, IB, and Cambridge students from Indian schools qualify. Attach an official medium of instruction letter from your school or university on the application portal.
Johns Hopkins University Postgraduate Programs
Johns Hopkins offers postgraduate degrees across the Whiting School of Engineering, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Bloomberg School of Public Health, School of Nursing, Carey Business School, Peabody Institute, and the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies. Base tuition varies by school, with a typical band of USD 60,480 to 68,000 (INR 57.15 to 64.26 Lakhs) per year — see the full postgraduate program list for course-wise breakdown.

Planning note: Bloomberg School of Public Health is the largest PG hub for Indian students at Hopkins. The MPH pathway sees the highest India-origin cohort and the strongest post-study OPT pipeline into US healthcare and biotech firms.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Johns Hopkins University page for your chosen program before applying.
Johns Hopkins University Undergraduate Programs and Majors
Undergraduate applicants apply through the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences or the Whiting School of Engineering. Both schools share the same Common Application and supplement — you nominate a first-choice major but are not locked into it. Base tuition for 2026-27 is USD 65,046 (INR 61.47 Lakhs) per year across all undergraduate majors.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| BS Biomedical Engineering | 4 years | Class XII 85 percent-plus with physics, chemistry, mathematics | TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0 |
| BA Public Health Studies | 4 years | Class XII 85 percent-plus with biology or social sciences | TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0 |
| BS Computer Science | 4 years | Class XII 85 percent-plus with mathematics | TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0 |
| BA International Studies | 4 years | Class XII 85 percent-plus with humanities or social sciences | TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0 |
| BS Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering | 4 years | Class XII 85 percent-plus with physics, chemistry, mathematics | TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0 |
| BA Molecular and Cellular Biology | 4 years | Class XII 85 percent-plus with biology and chemistry | TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0 |
Indian applicants weigh Biomedical Engineering and Public Health Studies most heavily — both benefit from Hopkins’s clinical and research links across the medical campus. Computer Science is competitive because the Whiting School’s admit rate skews below the university average.
Johns Hopkins University MBA at Carey Business School
The Carey Business School Full-Time MBA is a 21-month program in Baltimore’s Harbor East. It is STEM-designated, giving Indian graduates the 36-month total OPT window after the degree. Tuition for the 2026-27 cohort is around USD 70,000 (INR 66.15 Lakhs) per year.
Johns Hopkins University MBA Deadlines
- Round 1: 15 October 2026 (decisions by mid-December 2026)
- Round 2: 5 January 2027 (decisions by mid-March 2027)
- Round 3: 15 March 2027 (decisions by late April 2027)
Johns Hopkins University MBA Eligibility for Indian Applicants
- Undergraduate degree: Four-year Bachelor’s from a recognised institution, 3.0 GPA equivalent.
- Work experience: Two to five years preferred; Full-Time MBA class median is around 4 years.
- GMAT or GRE: Optional for Fall 2027; median GMAT of admits sits near 640.
- Essays and interview: Two written essays plus a video essay; interviews are by invitation only after screening.
Planning note: Round 1 gives Indian applicants the best odds and the widest scholarship consideration. Round 3 is not recommended for international candidates who need the full I-20 timeline before visa slots close.
Carey also runs a Flexible MBA (part-time, hybrid) and MS in Marketing, Finance, and Health Care Management. The Flex MBA needs 2-plus years of experience and is only open to US residents on evening classes, so Indian applicants abroad target the Full-Time route.
Johns Hopkins University PhD Admissions for Indian Students
Johns Hopkins funds most PhD candidates in full — tuition waiver plus an annual stipend of around USD 37,500 (INR 35.44 Lakhs) for the 2026-27 academic year, along with health insurance. Funding runs typically 5 years for STEM programs. See funding options for Indian students for the full scholarship list.

- Deferrals: Approved case-by-case; typically allowed for medical or national service reasons only.
Johns Hopkins University Documents Required
Indian applicants need to gather paperwork for the application, the visa file, and the I-20 issuance. Missing documents are the most common cause of delay for Fall 2027 international admits at Hopkins. Prepare the checklist below at least eight weeks before your target deadline.
Johns Hopkins University Academic and Application Documents
- Valid Indian passport with at least six months’ validity beyond program start.
- Certified transcripts and grade sheets from Class X, Class XII, and Bachelor’s (for PG).
- Degree certificate or provisional certificate for postgraduate applicants.
- English proficiency score report sent directly by ETS, IELTS, Duolingo, or PTE.
- Two teacher recommendations (UG) or three academic recommendations (PG).
- Statement of purpose or personal essay (UG uses the Common App essay plus JHU supplement).
- Updated CV or resume (PG only).
- Passport-size photograph in JPEG format.
Johns Hopkins University Financial and Visa Documents
- Bank statements or sponsor affidavit showing funds for one full academic year.
- Certificate of Finances form signed by the sponsor.
- Loan sanction letter from an Indian lender if using education loan support.
- Copy of the I-20 form (issued by Hopkins after acceptance) for the F-1 visa file.
Johns Hopkins University Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
Johns Hopkins is one of the most selective research universities in the United States. The overall undergraduate acceptance rate for the Class of 2029 was around 7 percent, and international acceptance runs slightly lower given the applicant pool depth. Graduate admit rates vary sharply by school — Bloomberg School of Public Health admits closer to 30 percent, while the Whiting School’s CS MS admits under 15 percent.
Johns Hopkins University Overall Acceptance Trend
The undergraduate admit rate has fallen from 11 percent to 7 percent over the last five cycles as the applicant pool has grown past 40,000. See the detailed acceptance-rate breakdown for year-by-year figures across Krieger and Whiting.
What raises Johns Hopkins University admit odds for Indian students?
Recent Indian admits share three traits: Class XII in the top 5 percent of the board, research or advocacy experience beyond school, and a supplement essay that names specific Hopkins programs or faculty. Early Decision applications sit at a 25 to 30 percent admit rate, roughly triple the Regular Decision rate.
Insider note: Hopkins uses a school-by-school review inside the Common App, so a Krieger applicant is not measured against Whiting applicants. Indian students strong in humanities do better applying to Krieger than to Whiting Engineering.
The Johns Hopkins ranking band — top 20 globally on QS, THE, and US News — sets the applicant selectivity you should expect at every level.
USA F-1 Student Visa for Johns Hopkins University Applicants
Indian students admitted to Johns Hopkins apply for the F-1 student visa. Book the interview slot at the US Embassy in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad once the I-20 form arrives from Hopkins International Services. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,075) and the DS-160 visa application fee of USD 185 (INR 17,483) before scheduling.
Bring the I-20, passport, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, admission letter, financial proof (bank statements plus sponsor letter), and Class XII or Bachelor’s transcripts. Consular officers focus on your academic fit, financial capacity, and intent to return after study. Read the full F-1 visa guide for Indian students for the step-by-step interview file.
2026 update: The F-1 STEM OPT extension remains at 24 months, giving Johns Hopkins STEM graduates a total 36-month post-study work window. Full-Time MBA at Carey is STEM-designated, so MBA graduates also qualify for the extension.
Tips and Checklist for Johns Hopkins University Admissions
The following tips and checklist are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Johns Hopkins over the last three admission cycles. Combine the advisory notes with the timeline-anchored steps to plan a Fall 2027 application.
- Anchor essays to Hopkins programs: Name specific majors, faculty, or research centres in the supplement — generic essays underperform sharply.
- Start test prep by June 2026: IELTS or TOEFL scores need to reach Hopkins six weeks before the deadline.
- Request transcripts eight weeks early: Indian boards and universities are slow — start by early September 2026 for a November deadline.
- File financial documents before Christmas: Bank statements and sponsor forms take two weeks; do not stack these with essay work.
- Line up recommenders in July: Give teachers or professors 90 days’ notice; share your CV and target program list.
- Pick Early Decision only if Hopkins is your top choice: The binding rule blocks other US applications once you accept.
- Book the F-1 visa slot the day you receive I-20: April-May visa slots fill fast; schedule the interview within 72 hours.
- Complete a mock interview: Practice with a mentor for Carey MBA or PhD shortlists — the video and virtual formats reward structured answers.
Johns Hopkins remains one of the strongest US options for Indian students in medicine, public health, engineering, and international relations, backed by top-20 global rankings and the STEM OPT pathway. Track the Fall 2027 deadlines above, and layer the Early Decision, Regular Decision, or graduate program timelines into a working calendar. Move on the Common App and school portals as soon as the required documents are ready.

- What I like most about this university is its excellence in biomedical research. It is one of the best in the field.
- I developed a strong interest in biomedical research during my undergraduate studies, and this university stood out as the ideal place to pursue that passion. It also provides a decent stipend, and the professors, facilities, and overall resources are truly top-notch.
Dislikes
- The only downside is that housing near campus can be a bit expensive, but that is a common issue across most universities, so it is not a major concern.
- Overall, choosing to come here for my PhD has been one of the best decisions I have made.

- I was interested in stem cell research and I got to choose Regenerative and stem cell technology as my concentration for my masters program.
- Since I was in the field of Biotechnology, research is the main reason I joined Johns Hopkins University (JHU). JHU is highly reputed as a research institute with various facilities that help students pursue their interest in research and train them with skills required in the industry nowadays. I also like that mostly all the professors have a PhD degree and have knowledge in their field which they can convey to students through lectures and seminars.
Dislikes
- Most of the courses are online including few lab courses which are hybrid (online theory and practical in person lab work). Sometimes that becomes an issue for selecting courses for international students specifically as they cannot choose a subject that they like to maintain their student visa status.
Overview
My overall experience was good. I got to work part time in 3 different labs at the university and gain knowledge of new skills and techniques used in research.
