The Bemidji State University has international student enrollment from more than 30 countries among its total student population of around 5000 candidates. It is a state-supported, coeducational institution of the US Education System offering bachelor and master degree programs to students since 1919.

The academic year at the institute is divided into 2 sixteen-week semesters. Admissions at Bemidji State University observe an acceptance rate of nearly 67% which makes it a moderately competitive organization to get into. Some of the salient points to be noted when applying at the institute are as listed below.

  • The institute accepts international student admissions in the fall and spring semesters only. It also provides 3-5 week summer sessions in June till mid-August.
  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis but graduate students are suggested to complete applications by April 1.
  • Both the undergraduate and graduate applicants have to apply through the university’s online portal.
  • Applicants must deposit a non refundable fee of 20 USD when applying for admission which is waivable under certain circumstances.
  • All the aspirants must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 or above when seeking enrollment at the university.
  • SAT/ACT scores are highly recommended for all the undergraduate applicants. Graduate students might also have to fulfill additional requirements such as CV, letters of recommendation and work experience.
  • International students are not eligible for federal/ state loans or grants at the institute. All international applicants will be considered for the International Student Merit Award.

Admission Deadlines

Applications from international students to an array of courses offered by Bemidji State University are accepted on a rolling basis. However, the School of Graduate Studies suggests students to complete applications by April 1.

It is suggested that students submit applications along with the necessary credentials at the earliest possible so that the evaluation committee gets sufficient time for its evaluation and applicants get time for the visa process and travel arrangements. 

International Student Admissions

Students who require registration under SEVIS are categorized as international students. Every international student will require either an F-1 or J-1 visa for studying in the U.S. International students applying for admission online must select “International Visa Holder or Seeker” under the ‘Citizenship’ option. Including the Social Security Number is optional.

Admission Requirements: A list of supporting documents required to be submitted along with the application are given below. Students must scan and submit these documents to the admission office via email.

  1. High school transcripts: Applicants must submit original transcripts or copies of original transcripts with official certification from all institutions previously attended. Applicants whose transcripts are not in English must also include translation from a certified agency.
  2. Proof of English language proficiency: It is mandatory for all international students except the ones who apply for the program offered by the English Language Center.
  3. Financial Affidavit: This must include Cost Info and Expense Sheet. It is required to check that the student has enough funding to cover the cost of studying one year at BSU. This form will be considered only if it has required signatures, bank statements, official letters or an affirmation of support.
  4. Statement of Purpose: It is a requirement where students must demonstrate their academic background, future educational goals and how the University is going to help them achieve it.
  5. Completed and signed International Student Agreement Form
  6. Applicant’s copy of the passport identification page
  7. Completed authorization form to release student information

English Proficiency Test Scores

International students must submit one of the English proficiency test scores as a part of the admission process. Official scores must be sent to the International Program Center of the University. Students who fail to meet the minimum requirements as mentioned in the table below must take a Pathway Program before being admitted to the University.

Visa Process for International Students

The University issues an I-20 or DS-2019 which enables students to apply for an F-1 or J-1 visa to study in the USA . In order to do so, the University requires financial documents that include Financial Affidavit, 2019-20 cost information and 2020-21 expense sheets and copy of the applicant’s ID page of passport. 

However, these documents are not required at the time of application submission. These are required when full admission of the applicant is confirmed. Any documents required in addition to the application can be mailed to international@bemidjistate.edu .

Bemidji State University Undergraduate Admissions

International undergraduate students willing to apply to Bemidji State University must have completed secondary/ high school with an average ‘C’ grade or above. Documents submitted in the addition to the ones required will not be considered for the evaluation. Also, the University can ask for original copies of any documents which it finds suitable.

Bemidji State University Graduate Admissions

Application portal: International graduate applications must complete the BSU Graduate Application for Admission.

The institute offers both on campus as well as online programs in various disciplines for applicants looking to study in the USA. The basic eligibility criteria for international graduate applicants are to hold bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 2.75.

*Work experience is not a mandatory requirement for applying to the programs. However, applicants who have relevant experience must share it through the letter of intent.

Students whose admission is confirmed will be sent a welcome packet which will include I-20 or DS-2019 and the letter confirming admission. On receiving admission confirmation, students must follow some procedures before their arrival. This includes signing I-20/ DS-2019, payment of SEVIS fee, applying for student visa and arranging their arrival at Bemidji, Minnesota.

All international applicants need to arrive at the university at least 1 week prior to the commencement of the term to attend the mandatory new international student orientation. The orientation program is conducted by the International Program Center in every fall and spring term.
