University of North Dakota (UND) is a public research university in Grand Forks, North Dakota, founded in 1883 and ranked #378 in Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 among global universities Indian applicants track. Home to the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, UND was the first US university to offer an accredited degree in unmanned aircraft systems, and it houses the only law and medical schools in North Dakota.

UND runs a full campus catalogue of about 250 academic programmes across bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and professional levels, all taught in English, with an in-person delivery model backed by strong online graduate options. Indian applicants apply mainly for Fall (August) with a smaller Spring (January) window; popular MS tracks include Computer Science, Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and the flagship Aviation and Aerospace Sciences at Odegard. Enrolment sits near 15,800 students drawn from 99 nations, and UND publishes annual pathways for MS, MBA and PhD applicants from India.

Admission Status: Open (Spring 2027 intake). International applications for Spring 2027 (January to May) close 15 November 2026 for students from all countries except Canada, with a USD 35 application fee. The larger Fall 2027 intake opens after the Spring window closes; its international deadline is 15 June 2027 per the current cycle. Applicants should start credential evaluation with WES at least 8 weeks before the chosen deadline.

Popular Courses and Fees at UND 2027

UND publishes a per-credit tuition model with distinct international rates by college. Master’s programmes typically span 30 to 36 credits over 2 years; the MBA sits at 2 years and 32 credits; bachelor’s degrees run 4 to 5 years across 120 to 124 credits. STEM graduate rates fall within a USD 12,820 to USD 29,402 annual band, while non-STEM PG programmes start closer to USD 9,672 per year. All figures below are per academic year for international students.

UND Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

The bar for Indian applicants is modest for a US public research university, with English test scores the main gating item for master’s admits.

PG Requirements

  • Academic: A recognised bachelor’s degree with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended threshold; Odegard aerospace and MS Computer Science admits typically clear 65% or CGPA 6.5/10)
  • English test (graduate): IELTS 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 76 (0-120 legacy scale) / 4.0 (1-6 scale used from 21 January 2026), or Duolingo English Test 110; PTE Academic accepted per department
  • Credential verification: Course-by-course WES evaluation of all transcripts
  • Teaching assistantship applicants: TOEFL Speaking subtest 26/30

UG Requirements

  • Academic: Class 12 with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher on a 4-point scale (roughly 70% CBSE/ISC)
  • English test (undergraduate): IELTS 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 71 (0-120 legacy scale) / 3.5 (1-6 scale used from 21 January 2026), or PTE Academic 50, or Duolingo English Test 105
  • Application fee: USD 35, non-refundable

Note: UND accepts IELTS scores only if taken within the last three years. Indian applicants sitting the test more than 36 months before the intended intake must retake it, so schedule the exam after the January before the target Fall.

UND Acceptance Rate 2027

UND’s overall acceptance rate is 77% per Collegedunia Study Abroad’s 2026 profile, which lines up with the "moderately selective" band US News assigns the university. The number is stable enough that Indian applicants who clear the published academic and English minimums have a genuine chance of admission.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
202677%Stable
202581% (estimated)Slight tightening

Selectivity varies by programme: the Odegard School of Aerospace, MS Computer Science and the doctoral pipelines run tighter, while non-STEM master’s such as MPH and MA Communication sit near the university-wide rate. Undergraduate international admits with a 2.75 GPA and a valid English score generally see decisions within 4 to 6 weeks.

Reality check: A 77% headline rate does not mean 77% of Indian applicants get in for MS Computer Science. Yield-conscious departments filter for backlog history and IELTS above 6.5 even when the university minimum sits at 6.0.

UND Fees and Cost of Living for Indian Students 2027

Total annual outlay for an Indian master’s student at UND runs USD 24,000 to USD 44,000 per year (INR 23.0 lakh to INR 42.1 lakh), covering both tuition and Grand Forks living costs. UND publishes its rates through a per-credit tuition model that Indian applicants can rerun on the official cost calculator by term and college.

UND Tuition Fees for Indian Students 2027

Tuition alone ranges from USD 9,672 per year for the MBA at the low end to USD 29,402 per year for MS Computer Science at the high end. Undergraduate international tuition sits in the USD 10,094 to USD 23,624 per-year band, with aviation programmes adding separately billed flight fees.

University of North Dakota Campus, Facilities and Student Life

UND’s Grand Forks campus spans 521 acres with 240 buildings, sitting a 90-minute drive south of the Winnipeg (Canada) border and 5 hours from Minneapolis-Saint Paul.

  • Location and transport: Grand Forks International Airport (GFK) sits 6 km west of campus, with same-day connections to Minneapolis and Chicago hubs; the city bus system is free for UND students
  • Housing: On-campus residence halls guarantee first-year international students a bed at USD 500 to USD 700 per month; graduate students typically shift off-campus after year one
  • Signature facility: The Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences operates its own fleet of 120+ aircraft and a full air traffic control simulator, the largest civilian aviation training operation of any US public university
  • Indian student community: A registered Indian Students Association organises Diwali and Holi cultural events, and the UND International Center runs an airport pickup for new arrivals

What Indian students say: Grand Forks winters run to minus 25 degrees Celsius; budget for a good winter coat and boots on arrival. The campus is walkable but the surrounding city is car-first, so factor in either a used-car purchase or a room within 15 minutes of the main quad.

UND Scholarships 2027

UND funds more than USD 11.8 million in undergraduate scholarships every year, and international freshmen have a small dedicated award pool. At the graduate level, funding is almost entirely departmental, routed through assistantships that combine full tuition waivers with a monthly stipend.

University of North Dakota Rankings 2027

UND’s strongest published rank comes from US News Best Global Universities 2026-2027 at #1589, and it sits at #378 out of 824 in Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026. It is not currently ranked in the QS World or Times Higher Education World tables, a pattern typical of regional US public research universities.

At the subject level, ARWU’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects has placed UND’s Atmospheric Science, Psychology and Education in the #301-500 band, and QS Sustainability 2026 lists the university at #1501+ globally.

Key insight: Indian applicants worried about the missing QS rank should note that US F-1 visa eligibility does not depend on ranking. UND’s institutional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission is what unlocks the visa and the OPT extension for STEM master’s admits.

UND Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UND does not publish a single institution-wide placement rate for international MS or MBA graduates, but the university reports strong employer demand for Odegard aerospace, energy engineering and computing graduates.

  • Median starting salary: Not disclosed at institution level; US master’s-level roles for STEM disciplines typically start above USD 70,000 per year (INR 67 lakh) as market context, verify at the target department
  • Signature employer sectors: Aviation (regional and major US carriers), oil and gas (Bakken formation employers), federal aerospace and defence contractors, and Midwest health systems
  • Career support: The Career Services office runs an employer-in-residence programme and hosts three campus-wide career fairs each academic year
  • Post-study work: STEM master’s graduates qualify for the 36-month OPT extension; MBA and MPH graduates receive the standard 12-month OPT
  • Indian alumni footprint: UND alumni sit across US aviation authorities, oil-and-gas majors and Midwest tech firms; specific placement lists sit inside each department

Insider note: The Odegard aviation pipeline is the single fastest hiring track for Indian graduates who arrive with an ATPL pathway plan; regional US carriers actively recruit from the December graduating cohort.

University of North Dakota vs Peer Universities

The natural peer set for UND runs across other Midwest public research universities, particularly those with strong STEM master’s pipelines and low-to-moderate tuition. Fees below reflect PG international rates.

UniversityQS World 2027Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026Avg Annual PG FeeDifferentiator
University of North DakotaNot ranked#378 of 824USD 12,820 (INR 12.3 lakh)Only unmanned aircraft systems degree in the US

University of Nebraska Lincoln#651-660Verify at CDUSD 21,000 (INR 20.1 lakh, estimated)Big Ten public with wider recruiter reach

UND wins on two counts against this peer set: its aviation and unmanned aircraft systems programmes have no direct US public-university substitute, and its non-STEM PG tuition starts below USD 10,000 per year. It loses on scale of research funding, where NDSU and Nebraska Lincoln operate larger STEM ecosystems.

The University of North Dakota is the right pick for Indian MS applicants targeting aviation, aerospace, petroleum engineering or atmospheric sciences who want a low tuition band and access to STEM OPT. Total investment sits at USD 24,000 to USD 44,000 per year against a US master’s-level starting-salary band above USD 70,000, giving a payback window shorter than most East and West Coast peers. The 36-month OPT extension is the specific Indian-relevant advantage; the F-1 student visa route is well-trodden for UND admits.

UND is a weaker fit for applicants chasing brand-heavy MS Computer Science or MBA outcomes; the missing QS rank hurts perception, and MS Computer Science tuition (USD 29,402 per year) prices out most of the value advantage. Applicants in that profile should shortlist Arizona State University or University at Buffalo in parallel.

University of North Dakota FAQs

Ques. Does University of North Dakota require GRE for MS admission?

Ans. GRE is not required for most MS programmes at UND, including MS Computer Science and the engineering master’s tracks. A few doctoral pipelines and departmental teaching assistantship nominations still ask for GRE scores, so Indian applicants targeting funded PhD spots should sit the test. The University of North Dakota publishes GRE requirements at the department level; check the target programme’s admissions page before finalising the test calendar.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at UND?

Ans. F-1 visa holders at the University of North Dakota can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during official university breaks. On-campus roles typically pay USD 10 to USD 15 per hour and run through libraries, dining, IT support and departmental research. Off-campus work through Curricular Practical Training becomes available after one full academic year of enrolment and needs departmental approval.

Ques. What is the application fee for University of North Dakota?

Ans. UND charges a USD 35 non-refundable application fee for both undergraduate and graduate international applicants, payable in US funds only. That converts to roughly INR 3,350 at the September 2026 exchange rate. The fee is not waivable for international applicants except through a small set of partner counselling programmes, so budget it into the application timeline alongside the WES evaluation fee of about USD 200.

Ques. How long does STEM OPT last for UND graduates?

Ans. Graduates of designated STEM master’s programmes at the University of North Dakota qualify for the 24-month OPT extension on top of the standard 12-month OPT, giving 36 months of post-degree work authorisation in the United States. MS Computer Science, all four engineering master’s tracks, MS Atmospheric Sciences and MS Petroleum Engineering are all on the STEM Designated Degree Program List, so Indian graduates from these programmes get the full three years.

Ques. Which Indian education loans cover University of North Dakota?

Ans. Major Indian lenders including SBI, HDFC Credila, Avanse, Axis Bank and Prodigy Finance list UND as an approved institution and fund the full annual cost of attendance up to about INR 45 lakh unsecured and higher with collateral. The University of North Dakota’s I-20 form is accepted by public-sector banks without an additional pre-visa document. Interest rates for 2026-2027 disbursals sit in the 10% to 12% band for unsecured loans.

Ques. Does UND require SAT or ACT for undergraduate admission?

Ans. The University of North Dakota is test-optional for undergraduate admission and does not require SAT or ACT scores from Indian applicants. Class 12 marks and the English proficiency score carry the full weight of the academic assessment. Applicants with strong SAT or ACT scores may still submit them for scholarship consideration, since the freshman merit awards use standardised test scores as a tie-breaker at the top GPA bands.

Ques. What documents does UND ask for from Indian applicants?

Ans. Indian applicants to the University of North Dakota need Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, bachelor’s transcripts (WES course-by-course evaluation for graduate applicants), a valid IELTS or TOEFL scorecard, passport bio-page copy, a Statement of Purpose, two Letters of Recommendation for master’s programmes, and a Confidential Financial Statement backed by a bank certificate covering at least one year of tuition and living costs. Some engineering PG tracks also request a resume.

Ques. Are there any UND scholarships specifically for Indian students?

Ans. The University of North Dakota does not run a country-specific scholarship for India, but the International Freshman Award of USD 2,750 to USD 3,500 per year is open to all international undergraduates and Indian applicants qualify on GPA alone. At the graduate level, department-nominated teaching and research assistantships waive tuition and add a stipend of USD 16,000 to USD 20,000 per year; these are the most Indian-relevant funding routes at UND.

Overview

Because it is close to home and has a really good program for public health. It is also in Texas so it is not as expensive as if I went to another state because all other states are more expensive than Texas.

Campus Life

6

Campus life is pretty boring. I wish they would renovate the building and make it nicer to be in and more modern and functional. It’s hard to find outlets to plug in my laptop and work. There aren’t many clubs or extracurricular activities. There are events and there is a library and there is wifi.
