IIM Guwahati Seat Matrix 2027 is expected to repeat the 2026-28 pattern. The institute's published matrix carries 70 MBA seats in all. These include 28 General and 19 NC-OBC seats. The rest are 11 SC, 7 EWS and 5 ST seats.
Reserved categories together hold 42 of the 70 seats. PwD candidates get 5 percent within each category. That works out to 3 PwD seats across the whole matrix.
The matrix for the 2027-29 batch is expected on the institute's admissions page at iimg.ac.in. IIM Guwahati filled its first MBA batch with 52 students. They came from 18 states.

IIM Guwahati Seat Matrix 2027 Category-Wise Breakup
IIM Guwahati is the 22nd IIM and is mentored by IIM Ahmedabad. The seat matrix below is the one the institute published for its first MBA batch. The 2027-29 breakup is expected to follow the same category shares.
| Category | Total Seats | PwD Seats | Non-PwD Seats |
|---|---|---|---|
| General | 28 | 1 | 27 |
| NC-OBC | 19 | 1 | 18 |
| SC | 11 | 1 | 10 |
| EWS | 7 | 0 | 7 |
| ST | 5 | 0 | 5 |
| Total | 70 | 3 | 67 |
General is the largest block at 28 seats. ST is the smallest at 5 seats. Only 3 of the 70 seats sit inside the PwD sub-quota.

How IIM Guwahati Divides Its MBA Seats by Category
The institute follows the Government of India reservation policy. Each share is applied to the planned batch size and then rounded. The table shows how the 70 seats are arrived at.
| Category | Reservation Share | Seats Out of 70 |
|---|---|---|
| General | 40.5% | 28 |
| NC-OBC | 27.0% | 19 |
| SC | 15.0% | 11 |
| EWS | 10.0% | 7 |
| ST | 7.5% | 5 |
Example: NC-OBC gets 27 percent of 70 seats. That comes to 18.9 and rounds up to 19 seats. SC gets 10.5 seats and rounds up to 11.
General is not a quota. It is simply what is left after the four reserved blocks. So a larger batch size in 2027 would lift every block together.
PwD Seats Are Carved Out, Not Added
PwD reservation at IIM Guwahati is horizontal. The institute states that PwD seats are 5 percent within each category, then rounded. They are not extra seats on top of the 70.
So the single PwD seat under General sits inside the 28 General seats. That leaves 27 General seats for non-PwD candidates. EWS and ST round down to zero PwD seats at this batch size.
Example: How PwD Seats Are Calculated?
PwD reservation is 5% within each category and is included in the existing seats, not added separately.
- General: 28 × 5% = 1.4, rounded to 1 PwD seat (27 non-PwD)
- NC-OBC: 19 × 5% = 0.95, rounded to 1 PwD seat (18 non-PwD)
- SC: 11 × 5% = 0.55, rounded to 1 PwD seat (10 non-PwD)
- EWS: 7 × 5% = 0.35, rounded to 0 PwD seats
- ST: 5 × 5% = 0.25, rounded to 0 PwD seats
Since a fraction of a seat cannot be allotted, the institute rounds the calculated value while preparing the seat matrix. As a result, General, NC-OBC, and SC each receive one PwD seat, whereas EWS and ST do not receive a separate PwD seat because their 5% share is less than one.
Therefore, the 70-seat MBA batch still remains 70 seats. Out of these, 3 seats are reserved for PwD candidates within their respective categories, while the remaining 67 seats are filled by non-PwD candidates. This is why PwD reservation is called horizontal reservation—it is carved out from each category's allocation instead of increasing the total intake.
Who Can Claim the Reserved Seats at IIM Guwahati?
A reserved seat is claimed only with a valid certificate in the prescribed central government format. Candidates without the correct certificate are considered against General seats.
- NC-OBC: a non-creamy layer certificate issued for the current financial year.
- EWS: an income and asset certificate under the central EWS rules.
- SC and ST: a caste certificate from the notified issuing authority.
- PwD: a disability certificate showing at least 40 percent benchmark disability.
The academic bar also moves with the category. General, EWS and NC-OBC candidates need 50 percent in the bachelor's degree. SC, ST and PwD candidates need 45 percent.
CAT 2026 Percentile Needed for Each Category
Seats are filled from category-wise merit lists. Candidates must first clear the minimum CAT percentile for their category. The figures below are the ones IIM Guwahati applied in its first cycle.
| Category | Minimum Overall Percentile | Minimum Sectional Percentile |
|---|---|---|
| General and EWS | 85 | 75 |
| NC-OBC | 80 | 70 |
| SC | 75 | 65 |
| ST | 65 | 55 |
PwD candidates get a relaxation of 10 percentile points on both counts. A PwD candidate in the General category therefore needs 75 overall. Positive raw scores in VARC, DILR and QA are needed in every case.
What the Seat Matrix Means for CAT 2026 Aspirants
The competition sits in the open block. Only 27 non-PwD General seats were on offer in the first cycle. That is a small target for the largest applicant pool.
Ranks are computed separately for each category. A candidate is never ranked against a different category's list. There is no Written Ability Test and no Personal Interview.
The final order comes from a Composite Score. CAT carries 65 percent weight. The remaining 35 percent comes from Class 10, Class 12, graduation marks and work experience.
Example: an NC-OBC candidate at 84 percentile clears the 80 percentile bar. That candidate then competes only for the 19 NC-OBC seats. Strong Class 10 and Class 12 marks can lift the Composite Score past a higher percentile applicant.
Planned seats and filled seats are also different things. IIM Guwahati planned 70 seats and admitted 52 students in 2026. Waitlist movement continued into late June before the list closed.
